Subject: Sarpedon's Rebuilding the Scythes of the Emperor
Good start though.
As a bit of advice (if I able give any) I'll would add darker yellow/orange/light yellowish brown of your choice for recesses and semi obscured places like cuirass under hands, side armor on hips or codpiece. Deeper part - darker colour. That should add more volume and make your main yellow brighter without overhighlighting

Thank you yeah ! Uploaded before the wash so looked a bit brighter than intended. Moreover I did try stippling a bit to add some texture bit not sold on my rendition at least.. so went for an overall darker tint since most of the yellow parts are technically shadowed by different things.. mainly highlighted the gorget part !
Will get back to it at some point not sold on the tilt shield supposed to represent Mt Pharos..
But happy with the freehanded cross scythes on the shoulder and greave !
Happy as well with the deathwatch shoulder pad, not sure if looking good on camera but It has a lovely matte finish to it that I'm quite proud of !
And yeah the nid underfoot has a charred texture to it that I'm really happy with.. not sure if it looks good on the pics or noticeable at all but Irl it looks like a piece of Xenos coal !
Gonna have to find a lightbox and take some better pics haha
It's look great with washes! As always i forgot about them. Nid's parts on the floor are also notable. You make really good scythe blade this time and i like cloak.
Also do daemon head in in his head is his helmet?? It seems like Ordo Hereticus gonna have some questions about it...

Thank you for the continued support and hindsight! I'll have to focus on the banner now !
And thank you for the kind words !
+(+. Negative inquisitor, see it looks like a demon head but it's only my custom Sothan horror maskā¢.
++-. It does look heretical battle brother, we will have to conduct further investigation so come along now.
+(+. Again, negative Inquisitor, I haven't been to hell and back to be denied my return to my brothers.
++-. But then again we've heard rumours about you and your "brothers" surrender the item and your weapon and follow us willingly or we will make you.
+(+. I'm afraid I won't be able to comply this time, the problem with rumours inquisitor is that they make people nervous when really everything is under control, and you can not control an Astartes through fear so again you have no authority over me.
++-. Seize Him !
++/. * Brutal combat noises*
++-. Holy terra.. you won't get away wi*bang*
+(+. If the rumours are true I'll purge the chapter myself inquisitor, rest assured, as I was the first to face these foul insects.. it is only fitting if I would have to become the last of my kind .
Glad you noticed though ! Head canon is that those are talons or fangs or whatever else might come from a unique Tyranid bioform that Remas encountered and vanquished.
Being the first to board a hive ship he would have been part of the naval engagement above Sotha.
In the novel Heloth about that very specific engagement it is said that the scythes and retinue cannot process nor follow the different hive ships since they can't really estimate their tonnage or role in a classic naval engagement..one sothan auxiliary, iirc, suggest naming them to identify them and organise a suitable coordinated course of actions, which proves effective at least at the start.
In order for it to make sense to everyone on board they chose names of monsters from their own Sothan mythology.
As such Remas customised his helmet during his vigil to better emulate the aspect of his chapter and legacy.
Becoming a monster himself in the process, he has become the Sothan reaper, the death incarnate of his hated foe and if the Tyranid do possess any semblant or Primal instinct he shall strike fear into the hive mind !

kabaakaba wrote: Just let it be. Tbh banner on par with whole model. Looks good, a bit to grim in my taste but good.
Oh well thank you, I'll probably still work a little bit on it later on, once the rest of the vets are painted though.
I can hear that, I am nowhere close skill wise to be able to pull a "clean" battle worn and grim dark style yet the 'eavy metal style isn't for me at all.
Thank you for the useful advices and inputs !
kabaakaba wrote: Heh this Tyranids parts fetishes looks looks a bit grim but complements overall look
ahaha yeah, it was frowned upon by most of the scythes themselves during their first engagement on Sotha but after the fall more and more of the battle brother gave in into desperation and without any outlet to vent their hatred more and more of them are seen collecting trophies as payback for the loss of their homeworld.
my take is that while most of the remaining battle brothers are becoming de facto specialised tyranids hunters they are slowly casting away their polyvalence to enact vengeance on the tyranids and the tyranids only. Those radical and fanatical battle brothers are now grouped together in those " tyranic war veterans" squad kinda like death company from the blood angels, and deployed in the thick of it where they can give in to wrath, become vengeance incarnate and finally rejoin their battle brother without the shame of having surviving the loss of the homeworld.

Those latest shots of Sergeant Remas are awesome, mate. He looks like an absolute monster, so your theme has worked! I love your painting style, currently I havenāt got to the point of being able to achieve this gritty aesthetic.

thank you very much Ragsta, mate that means a lot ! wish i could explain the process as if it was something i mastered over the years but really, I don't really know it's just how I paint i guess.
Hi all,
Small update as they didn't feel fancy enough, so went back and added some capes and skirts !
Hopefully they'll be done by the end of the week unless..
kabaakaba wrote: I'll wait complete squad! They look way uncommon for marines and and I even think give a try to them.
That's exactly what I was planning, next update will be the completed squad .
Thank you for the continued support! I'd love to see what you could come up with on some space marines !
Hi all massive update incoming! I haven't been idle this week so without further ado :
I'll put Remas' backstory in spoiler because it's gonna be a long post anyway !
If you guys want I might add a spoiler as well for the WIP shots.
Spoiler:
Chaplain Cassius quietly entered the Chapel of Sanctity. The figure kneeling in the centre of the stone-flags, dimly lit by flickering candles, seemed not to notice him.
"Sergeant Remas," said Cassius, his voice stern, but not without sympathy. The sergeant looked up and then slowly rose to his feet. He was shorter than the Chaplain, but more solidly built. He wore a black tunic, its cuffs and hems decorated with a fine golden thread. There was a golden scythe embroidered on his left arm, the chapter badge of the Scythes of the Emperor.
Cassius motioned him to a seat at the side of the chapel: noticing that the sergeant limped heavily as he moved across the stone floor.
"Tell me what happened," said Cassius.
For a moment Remas hung his head. As he looked up, light glinted from the three silver studs embedded in his forehead, each inscribed with the figure of a horseman. The shadow of a deep, ragged scar crossed his left cheek. Remas's eyes were sad, but they held the Chaplain's gaze.
As he spoke, the sergeant's voice remained steady, almost completely motionless, but occasionally a nervous shudder shook his right arm.
"There was no warning when the other ship appeared, nothing showed on our surveyors until we were close enough to pick it up visually. It was a strange shape, like a great beast from the deep, a huge spiral armour on its back. It would not respond to our signals and kept moving towards the core planets of the system. We were having problems communicating with our fortress-monastery, so I took the decision to board.
"As soon as the boarding torpedo struck, we dispersed. The inside of the ship was like nothing I had ever seen before. Tubes of dark fluid ran along the walls, bloated creatures like maggots hung from the ceiling and the tunnels twisted like intestines. There was a constant, low pulsing sound and a stench like rotting flesh.
"We had just reached a wider chamber when they struck. There were three of them, each twice as tall as a man. They had bony plates on their back and, through their ribs. I could see ugly, throbbing organs. They had four arms, two with claws large enough to crush a man's head, and their spines ended in huge stingers that dripped black poison.
"Two of them had claws like swords that tore through power armour with ease. I saw one split Harvan in two, carving through his armour as though there was nothing there. The third had a long tube of gristle growing from its arms that groaned and made a noise like tearing flesh as it fired."
Remas paused for a moment. His eyes turned to the shredded banner standing in the corner of the chapel. It was checked and bore the image of a golden horseman. Cassius had been that when the Ultramarines found Remas's drifting ship, the unconscious sergeant was clutching the banner so tightly they had to wait until he woke before he would release it.
"I hope never to see that weapon used again. With one shot it killed three of my men, burning through their armour and spraying them with vile mucus. They died in agony. It was as though a plague rotted their flesh, but it took seconds, not days, to kill them."
"Their memory will live on," promised Cassius. He indicated that Remas should continue.
"We killed a dozen of these creatures, may be more, and left their ship crippled. We could find no consoles, no plasma drives, nothing to show how it was controlled, only things like swollen glands and organs that seemed to be part of the ship's structure. We destroyed everything we could and planted demolition charges powerful enough to rupture it from stem to stem. When we pulled away, only myself and Brother Tobias were left alive."
Remas fell silent, but continued to stare intently into Cassius's eyes as though he was looking for something: forgiveness perhaps. Or maybe he hoped that Cassius could deny what had happened. But Cassius had seen the last communications from Scythes' fortress. He had seen the plains burning under a huge pall of smoke as the aliens approached the walls. He had heard the terror in the final message from the Scythes' Astropaths, "The Tyranids are coming!" He knew there was no hope he could give Remas, except a chance for redemption in the wars that were inevitably coming. At last Remas looked down, but when he spoke there was a new firmness to his voice. "The Chapter is not lost. While any of us survive. The Scythes of the Emperor will serve with honour to the last man."
"Indeed they shall," nodded Cassius. "But first I need you to help me."
"Of course, Chaplain," nodded Remas. "Tell me what I must do."
"I want to know about the Tyranids: how they fight, how they react to threats and how we may yet defeat them," said Cassius. "Tell me everything."
Well guess what! * Head canon ahead *
The mad lad took the apocryphon oath and joined the deathwatch before returning to the chapter having learned of its survival!
Veteran Sergeant Scylax that lead the squad was personally recovered by Remas while boarding a derelict wounded hive ship during a strike action for the deathwatch.
It was Scylax that told him of the death of Thorcyra, of how Thracian was reorganizing the chapter to ensure it's survival but also of the schism that loomed over the remaining scythes, for many of the survivors would rather seek a glorious death than a "cowardly" rebuilding that would dilapidate all their legacy with fresh blood from backwater world that never even heard of Sotha..
Remas then petitioned Thracian to implement his very own Tyrannic War Veteran squads. Thracian agreed for one, if some brothers were volunteering.
It soon became evident that while the veterans of their primogenitors were there to teach others how to better kill the Tyranids, the Scythes had a more radical idea in mind.
Indeed as Scylax mentioned to Remas, Thracian and captain Zalmoxis. They were all Tyrannic War Veterans in their own right, each surviving battle brother were worthy of terminator honours and induction to the first company after the ordeal they had been through. That is if such a thing as a first company could ever be achieved once more for the Scythes.
It was obvious that the Tyrannic War Veterans would become vanquishers, exterminators. The embodiment of revenge against the hated foe. Their only purpose would be to hunt and eradicate the Tyranid menace or die in the attempt.. and squad Scylax would relish the opportunity to atone for the sin of surviving Sotha and their brothers.
I'll write some backstory and names for each member, so updates are still on the way !
Might try and do an army shot as well, any tips are more than welcome !
See ya !

Tommygun1918 wrote: That is really good conversion work. Nice job on the hand painted chapter icons.
That must be hard to keep them all looking consistent.
Thank you very much ! They no longer look like infernus marine for sure but I feel like they're not looking veteran enough but oh well, they're 99% done so..
Thank you, I gradually got better at it I guess. As I'm not the most patient or technical painter around It's more about the confidence on the brush control. Like I know this process in particular, start with a rough shape with heavily diluted base colour, shape it with a first layer of highlights, correct with second layer and then erase with the background colour..
It started as necessity when I was waiting for the decals and then I free hand sparingly here and there, so I 'm not too worried if the shape is not always the same. - I couldn't keep them consistent even if I tried to be honest
Hi all !
So my last project is done, and I started to work a bit more on the scenic base of the diorama but then this guy came in the mail today!
I have no idea what to make out of him though.. should I do another hive mind librarian? May be more true to the sketches of mark gibbons? Or may be a tech marine leading a salvation squad ? Hell I could do a chaplain as well though I don't really see the need for one..
I feel like I already have too many terminators for them to be lore accurate so I wonder .
If you have any idea or suggestions I'm all ears !
Thanks in advance.
See ya

kabaakaba wrote: Maybe standard librarian in tda with some fancy paintjob?
Yeah but I already got one and standard ain't really my thing ! Even if I stay with the librarian I'll feel compelled to work on him just for the sake of not looking like the other one..
My head canon is that the one I already did is the last remaining librarian of the chapter.. I'd rather make scouts acolytes as librarian in trainin than a full fledged one in terminator armour
