I have questions about the veteran squads available to space marines. If you give them all terminator honors, can they all choose weapons individually.

No, only the sergeant has access to the armoury, as that's a separate permission, not something inherent to the Terminator Honours.

So for this quote; "If the Sergant has Terminator Honors, every other Space Marine in that unit may be given them too..." Does that mean that every other rank and file only gain a +1 attack? I also see that the Vanguard Marines from the 5th don't really fit into this army list or am I missing an eratta on this?

Yes, every member of the squad gets an extra attack.

Those were the days before Vanguard, so no Veterans with CC weapons. However! From memory I believe a Command Squad could have Power Weapons. No Jump Packs though.

In 4th edition, Terminator Honours grants +1A and sets Ld to 9.

And no, in 4th edition only Blood Angels had veteran assault squads. For regular marines, you would have to run them as regular assault marines or Shrike's bodyguard (although those all had lightning claws).

I was never a fan of the vet squads in 3rd and 4th. They were still basically mediocre shooting, with a boost in CC but not the tools to really use it. And paid a pretty penny for the luxury of being kinda meh at everything.

Once they split onto vanguard/sternguard squads I started fielding veterans a lot more.

I feel like they should have kept veterans at WS5 BS5 from 2nd edition, and 2 attacks base. Then they'd at least be better, kind of... "veteran" compared to normal marines.

And all chapters should have had access to veteran tactical squads, veteran assault squads, and veteran devastator squads.

They never needed to add sterngaurd and vanguard veterans, they just needed to add options to the squads that existed, and they could have still sold the new miniatures they made for sternguard/vanguard, but there's just this dumb reason they have where "if they make a new mini they need to make it a new unit/squad" for some reason.

BS5 was a real premium with how small the range was.

WS5 though I think GW kind of painted themselves needlessly into a corner with by making their top HQs WS5 (or even WS4 in some cases). They had the space to work with there without breaking the game and rarely did - Grey Knights picked up the WS5/6 range at the end of 3rd but then GW dropped back to baseline until 4e chaos/5e marines... and even then only for HQs.

The extra attack on rank and file I think they just overvalued for far too long. I guess there was a desire to prevent units from overstepping their role into other rolls - i.e. if you want an assault unit then take an assault squad, not a veteran squad.

Pulled out my copy of the BRB and codex's for this. Yeah, looks like you are paying an extra 3 points for veteran status and you get a choice of special rules.(Furious Charge, Tank Hunters, Infiltrate) However you then have the option of paying the extra 10 pts for Terminator Honors. Looking at the Sternguard from the 5th edition the only difference between the two is that the veterans with terminator status is 3 points more but the same characteristics. The Sargent is 5 pts on top of that for the TA.

I guess that technically you can get assault veterans in that they can switch out the bolter for Bolt Pistol and Combat Weapon, but they are either on foot or driving. As stated before no option for jump packs. Having these guys with infiltrate and kitted up like this may be interesting to think about.

I liked the Veteran Squads and their Veteran Skills opportunities. That made them worth looking at, in my eyes.

Sternguard are fine, but a lot of the time they were just taken because they could load up on Combi Weapons so they could do Drop Pod alpha-strike attacks.

Ideologically I prefer the original Veteran Squads.

I’ve always been in the “boys before toys” camp. Better to have more boots on the ground then fewer, better equipped, squads. Obviously, some upgrades are going to be needed to get the job done. IMHO they did the same job as a tac squad, with more whistles and bells. Not that you couldn’t get good use of of them, and justify the upgrades. Just not my jam.

My preferred sternguard was bare bones, I took them for the special ammo. Did like some heavy flamers with them, as they have a lot of synergy with the ammo. For my second squad I did build half of them with c-melta. Because heavy armor was one thing the bolts did not do well against, but melta did.
