When looking at paint schemes for Knights, you have to decide whether you are going to use House Mechanicus/Mechanicum colors or House Questoris (for the Imperial Houses)... and the third option of Freeblades (in 40k)/Mendicants (in 30k).

Why this doesn't make the biggest of differences in 40k, it sure as heck has lasting repercussions in Horus Heresy.

Which route for painting Knights do you recommend?

I plan on using the same Knights for HH and 40k.

(If I had my druthers, I would paint one set of Knights as House Sidus in their Warmongers Legio heraldry for Mechanicus aligned joy... and a second army I'd finally get around to working on my Imperial Desert Rats force... right now they are a Combat Patrol.)

This seems like a non-issue and I'm not really sure how it has repercussions?

There are different options depending on which faction/allegiance you choose.

And that effects how you paint your custom house how exactly?

All the rules are saying is you are either Imperial, Mechanicum or Freeblade. It's not like the Legions where picking a scheme that corresponds to your rules.

We've already got examples of 40k Houses having very different schemes from their Heresy incarnations. House Krast's heraldry went from Prudsian blue to Martian red for example.

I admit I'm not the biggest 40k player, but I couldn't tell one knight house from another just from paint scheme without a codex or reference.

I seriously doubt anyone is going to sit down to a game and be like "No, no, that's clearly the paint scheme of House BollocksBashers and they were loyalists during the Heresy!".

Yet another reason to play Chaos.

But seriously, unless you're trying to go for a specific House, I wouldn't worry about it too much - especially in 40k.

I was thinking of adapting my army to 30k.

Maybe the easiest way is to add some Titan Legion heraldry to the Imperial Knights, that they have been tithed to the big guys.

All my knights atm are merelt base coated & some metallics. As im a super slow/unmotivated painter my Knights won't have such a problem for a very long time.

For your own? Paint them however you please & make up some story as to why they look that way.

I think most players would rather face a well-painted force than an unpainted one, regardless of lore accuracy.
