The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar

Upstate, New York

This month the topic was: Slow & Steady - Shambling hordes, lumbering vehicles, tortoises winning against Hares. Slow and inexorable. Or perhaps the subject looks like they are taking it easy, and are living life in the slow lane. You might not be first across the line, but will get there.

As always, you're free to hand out as many votes as you like, and for any entry you feel deserves recognition, based on anything from technical proficiency or model choice, a neat conversion or a cool take on the theme, or anything else! You're also very welcome to leave some feedback here for the entrants, and many of the images click through to the Dakka gallery if you'd like to give out a vote or two there as well.

A Protoss colony world

Since we're two days into the poll and nobody else has bothered commenting at all, I'll go ahead and give everybody a comment:

theCrowe: Some solid looking Skeleton Archers there. I like the color choices on the quivers and headgear.

Daia T'Nara: I'm not familiar with the Marines Errant, but those models turned out fantastic! I particularly like the hazard stripes on the fists.

inmygravenimage: I definitely like the color choices here, and the way each texture looks different and makes the whole piece come together.

Mr Nobody: Some more solid Terminators. I only wish we got some closer shots of them, but I understand if you were pressed for time.

Captain Brown: It's amazing what you can make with some old junk, eh? One man's trash is another man's treasure, and all that.

Geifer: Vader looks suitably intimidating; I like how you made his helmet look shinier with the highlights. I feel like his lightsaber blade should be a bit brighter, but that might distract from the rest of the piece.

JoshInJapan: The gritty, muted palette of color you've used really works well for a bunch of mutants. Nice work!

Pneumo: I do like how Dorn's armor is dirty and worn; makes it look like he's been out there doing his job. The missing arm is a nice touch too.

Jadenim: Okay, that is a cool sculpt, with him throwing the Goblin along with the ball! Your paintjob did it justice too, particularly on the troll's skin.

Pariah Press: I'm gonna guess these are from Battletech, yes? Either way they're awesome, and I love the armor color.

Maharg: I love how this guy's pose makes him look kind of cocky. Fitting for a dwarf hero in almost any fantasy universe. All the gold helps sell it too, like this guy really cares about how he looks.

Vejut: I like the pinstripes down the leg and shoulder panel. That kind of thing is tricky to do and have it look any good.

Nevelon: That's a solid group of shambling skellingtons. The silver armor contrasts nicely with the red cloth and helmet wings.

Xyabis: That's actually a very playful pose on that model, and I think his horns in particular turned out really good.

blockade23: I love your color scheme; these guys look great ranked up!

Gulgog Tuftoof: An Ork sniper seems like it should be a contradiction in terms, yet the Snipa Boy is possibly my favorite of the Kommandos, both in games of Kill Team and in terms of the model itself. Yours came out great! Which reminds me, I've got the Ork Kommandos kill team and they've been sitting in partially-painted hell for over a year at this point...

Yours truly: I'm happy with how my Scorp turned out. I was originally going for more of a gold finish on the armor, but it ended up looking like brass or bronze, which I'm calling a happy accident.

CancelledApocalypse: Truly a stunning rendition of Eldrad Ulthran. No notes, just awesome!

Midget Gems: You do have a talent for figuring out interesting Ork stuff, and this is no exception. I have to think you might have been inspired by the racing snail from the Neverending Story.

Seems like we have a little bit fewer entries, but the quality overall is quite high. Everyone who entered should be proud. Shout out as always to Nevelon for running this thing. See you all in the next one!

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.

Daia T'Nara - I love how well decorated the terminators. The checkers, the hazard stripes, the halved blues and whites. It all comes together to convey that these are highly decorated veterans. Or like the knights of the middle ages.

Captain Brown - I'm continuing to enjoy this eldar terrain. The soft curves and fluted necks give strong, elvish vibes and the dry brushing conveys just how ancient these structures must be.

Geifer - The OSL elevates this model from a model that would otherwise be quite drab. All black costumes might be imposing but that the most fun to look at.

Pneumo - I like the subtle weathering. Yellow is a great base colour for showing of dirt, grime and rust. The marble base is also beautifully done and looks exhausting to execute. Now, is the model incomplete or the missing arm subtly informing us on a character trait.

CancelledApocalypse - I think the blade and the gems are what really elevates this model. The soft blending and superb detail on the blade and gems is beautifully well done.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, ZergSmasher and Mr Nobody.

Yeah, the lightsaber ended up too dark. I have a good idea how to paint blue blades to look bright and glowy, but I haven't figured out yet how to go about it on red blades. Definitely something I want to work on in the future, and ideally not in the middle of a heat wave.

It was a fun experience to be sure. I might use OSL more often in the future.

Marching into 3rd with 20 votes, a crisp paint job and some lovely hazard stripes is Daia T’Nara's Marines Errant Terminators, Empyrean Crusade

Steadily followed at 21 votes by CancelledApocalypse and Eldrad. A foot character in Saim-Hann colors? So slow.

And eventually crossing the line to win gold with 22 votes is Midget Gems' Orc Attack Snail. Walk slightly fast away in terror, or that crazy monster will get you!

Slow and Steady was a lot of fun, and a ton of cool minis were painted this month. A fitting topic for our long war against the grey legions and the Pile of Shame. Keep painting, one model at a time, one layer at a time. It’s not a sprint to win the battle, but a steady advance. With every brush stroke we become better at our craft. With every mini painted our armies grow. Don’t be intimidated by how far the journey to being a master painter or having a fully painted army might seem. Just sit down, pick up the brush, and get working. A little bit every day, or whatever you can manage. Slow and steady, to victory!
