Hi all!

I've been making terrain, painting and gaming for many years. I'm not particularly good at any of those 3, due to constantly starting new pieces, armies and trying out different games and lists. The upside of that is I've been reading a lot, and have picked up a lot of tricks while discovering how to be resourceful. I have a fetish for scenery built from rubbish, and smart ways to use things, especially when it's not what they’re designed for. In contrast, while I love technology and 3D games, I'm not a big fan of 3D printing, I prefer the hands-on creative process and enjoy making unique one-off pieces. I own printed bits and bobs, they're great, and I realise 3D printing is indeed being resourceful in a way. But kitbashing / building terrain by hand is just too fun to pass up! Can't let machines have all the fun, can we?

Another thing I have a love / hate relationship with is 40K. The world is great: the bleakness, silliness and extremes are like no other. The game Darktide really brings it to life. But the tabletop game, while deep and interesting, is a little too much for a bit of fun in an afternoon, there's a lot to keep up with. So I've been playing other games with an open-minded friend (who also owns a large room full of toys) including X-Wing, Bolt Action, Gaslands and Burrows & Badgers. Our next big experiment will be Conquest, once I've finished painting the army box...

I also like the Blizzard style of artwork (WOW, Starcraft etc.), Borderlands and the artwork in the Paizo 1st ed. Pathfinder books. However, my painting is more generic - I'm still working out how to make more vibrant minis and builds.

I’m going to start sharing a lot more about my projects, paint jobs and games because I really value feedback, and there’s so much the community can teach each other - I LOVED the 13(?) year long thread here on hobby materials, and had to join. I’ve already been making short videos and a website of my own.

Anyway, enough from me for now. My first post here will be about painting concrete / cement walls and structures - I haven’t got a good recipe yet so would like to share ideas.

Have fun hobbying, until next time!

Welcome to Dakka Dakka!!

I look forward to seeing your post about painting cement walls and structures. -- What material do you use as a starting point?

If you like the 40k setting, but the game is too clunky, tedious, non-interactive and plain boring, don't forget to check Kill Team. A (surprisingly) dynamic and modern ruleset for GW standards, full of decisions, player agency and with games finished in an hour and a half (maybe not your first games ).

Thank you for the warm welcome. The pieces I've built so far to be painted as concrete are in different types of foam / expanded polystyrene. I have a few pictures - just about enough to show where I'm getting sort of stuck. I'm about to go away for a few days but I have enough here on my phone to get a discussion going.

Almost all the minis & scenery I paint, I stop after basecoat, wash & drybrush highlight, just to get them into play. Downside of having so little discipline with regard to starting so many new projects and games I suppose!

In the distant past, I did do a bit more on my models. There's a Warriors of Chaos army out there somewhere with a 2-headed dragon, and those had 1-2 highlight layers, fine blacklining, some volume shading and solid faces & eyes.

The above 2 paragraphs are to say: there is work, done with passion & care, but it probably wouldn't impress anyone visually! The range of things I've done recently fills out the "hobby basics" bingo card pretty well though!
