I'm currently constructing two titan battlegroups for Adeptus Titanicus. When I'm done (as much as one is ever done with an army), I would like to also dip my toes in Legions Imperialis (and maybe other Epic-scale games after that, but let's stick to LI for now). I'd really like to create a thematic and lore-appropriate titan force for LI - I have gotten the impression that this is not all that good in game terms, but let us leave that aside. Specifically, in the books I have read, titans are always accompanied by secutarii - infantry to protect the titans from assault. How would I design an LI army that follows this theme (mainly titans, but with numerically significant infantry support)? I should note that I have not yet actually read the LI rules, and I found it difficult to understand the army building guidelines I could find online.

Perhaps what I'm really asking is "which box of little Mechanicum or Solar Auxilia dudes can I buy and expect to actually be able to use in this titan-themed army?"

(I am aware that there are no actual secutarii models - that's fine; in my interpretation secutarii is a role, not a specific type of unit.)

In LI you have a 30% limit to take whatever allies you choose, in addition the Legio have a support formation called Collegia Titanica Support Cohorts, which does not use points from your allied allowance and mixes Mechanicum detachments with Titans.
So you can basically use what you want...

This is the support formation for Titan lists. You can field Arlatax, Castellax, and Domitar automata in the support slots, thanatars in the bastion slots, and thallax or tech-thralls in the core slots. The tech-thralls are probably closest thing to Secutarii in rules terms, but you'll have to take automata in the support slots before you can field them.

in terms of what to buy for it, these are the two sets you're looking at:

unfortunately, in both cases there will be a number of models/units that you wont be able to field. If you're being cost conscious, then the best thing you can do is probably ignore the core slots and skip the thallax/tech-thralls, that way you can get away with just buying the battle automata set, which you can use everything except the vorax and vulturax.

Oh and thanatars:

Thanks, this is really helpful. I am constrained more by time than money (relatively speaking...), so I don't mind getting models I don't have an immediate need for. I certainly intend to eventually build non-titan armies as well. The Legion Builder made it much easier for me to understand the army construction rules. Looks like I also have an excuse to get a Warmaster now.
