Yes, the thunder hawk gunship is the ultimate model in 40k, do you know why?

I'll tell you know to save you from guessing.

It has titan level firepower, titan level defences, and unless you challenge it with another flyer, you need a 6 just to hit it!

do you agree?

The all pewter Thunderhawk Gunship that came in the wooden crate is the ultimate model in 40k.

No.
Because you clearly don't know it's current rules.

You can go read them on GWs community page, under Downloads. Look for the Imperial Armour section.

If they released a plastic one, I’d still probably pick one up, even if it had crap rules. And being what it is, good odds on that.

It’s just so iconic.

I'm not even really a marine player, and I would probably buy a plastic Thunderhawk. I love vehicles with high enough transport capacity to transport small armies.

I think the last time I looked, the Hawk could transport 30 Marines? Depending on the build, 30 Marines could be an entire boarding action army. My Drukhari Space Lane Raiders are 33 models. I think the DW army I played last game was 26 Marines?

The question is if you can still afford 30 marines after buying the Thunderhawk.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

You are technically correct. The best kind of correct. But you know what we mean.

I came to say the same thing! If you're not filing metal and drilling holes for brass rod, are you, like, even making a 40k model?

But this is the REAL Thunderhawk.

A castle with engines on the back.

That is awesome. 30? years ago we mass produced 6 basic ones like that (but bad) out of foamcard for houseageddon. The Marines arrived in the top floor of the house of my friend while parents away and fought their way tot he subterranean living room HQ.

The pilot probably plays "Team Astartes" during flights.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

30 marines, or 15 terminators, 1 dreadnought can take up 5 marine spaces. There's also a thunderhawk transporter that can drop rhinos or a land raider. Might even have another transport variant somewhere too.

I think the thunderhawk is cool, but i've always felt underwhelmed by the rules personally myself. It makes more sense in a narrative style campaign or series of games instead of in one-off games, or perhaps some kind of mission where its transport ability helps you achieve mission objectives.

The Manta does the “one army, ready to deploy” thing better, but also dials the impractical nature up to 11. Aren’t they big enough to play a game of KT on/in?

The Tau need a whole army to get a job done, the Marines just need a thunderhawk and 30 marines to get the job done, hehe. Just joking, but if those marines were using "moving marine" rules it would be like... a 4000 pts army or more.

Huh. The Thunderhawk holds 30 marines, but needs to actually count bulky guys as taking more then one seat. IIRC there was a formation centered around 30 jump troops disembarking out of a low flying T-hawk.

Does anyone actually own a full scale one? I saw one at a GamesDay once.

FW sold them, resin ones. Not just the ancient metal ones. Presumably there are some out in the wild.

I’ve never seen one, but am a small fish in a small pond who doesn’t get around much.

I thought you would have one (or 5) for your Ultramarines army.

The Game's Day event had the Thunderhawk as an objective in an Apocalypse game... but I don't remember anymore about it because my army was obliterated by turn 2.

Yeah authentic resin thunderhawks are certainly out there, but they are well into that class of model where the cost limits the buying pool and then they are big and intimidating to the point even those who can afford it don't always want something that big.

For many that's the choice of a single display model that will mostly stay at home and might go to the local club once or twice; vs an army they can play and paint and use for years.

Plus many might think they "aren't good enough" to assemble and paint such a model.

Awesome! Do you assemble it? Or is it still in the crate?

This.

They are expensive resin, rules are always questionable if they are worth fielding, and the hobby budget is not infinate.

Big resin models are expert kits. Fixed warped bits, pinning everything, etc. at this point I’m confident that I could do it, but really would rather not.

A plastic one, even at the $200-300+ price range they are probably going to want, would make a nice capstone to my collection. It would be crazy and stupid, but I’d do it.

It's assembled.

It's also a working model, not just a dust collector.
It comes off the display shelf about once an edition for a game. Usually in support of my SW. So, now that the 10e SW codex is here....
Still never painted it.
It got damaged in a house move a few years back & is now missing one of its wing mount Lascannon.
