I had a quick game tonight. We played on combat patrol size table. I dont remember my opponents custodies list, but it only had 3 units and was the contents of the combat patrol box. My tau list was one unit of Fireknives, one Riptide, two broadsides with railrifles and SMS systems, two Piranha with fusion blasters and seeker missiles, one firewarror strike team being lead by a Fireblade. I used the Mont'ka detachment. We just played kill them all, no missions, or objectives.
I'd post pictures but they wouldn't have changed. Each picture would just show the Custodes advancing forward and the next photo would show them loosing models. The tau just sat back and shot forward. I had visions of skirting around the edges and harassing them as my Tau have superior mobility, but the narrow table more or less forced me to just hang back and gun line it.
At the end of the game (Turn 3) the tau had lost 4 fire warriors, one crisis suit, and both piranhas were injured but not killed. The custodies were dead to the man.
Things that I learned....
The tau strike team suppression volley is awesome. Splitting fire allowed me to tag two units a turn thanks to long range and now his guns are hitting less.
The custodes commanders special ability to give all models in his unit a 4+ FNP when timed right is a game changer. His unit tanked every high damage weapon I shot at him that turn. It was impressive.
Using Piranhas as spotter units is a great way to spend 60 points. The two seekers (even as one shots) hit hard as an alpha strike and then the unit are just opportunistic melta guns or charge blockers.
Playing static gun line isn't much fun. While a win is a win, I really wanted to move more and take advantage of the assault weapon rule of the Mont'ka, but the smaller table more or less just forced a stand and shoot playstyle, since Tau still suck in close combat.
Lethal Hits on a full unit of firewarriors getting 3 shots a model (thanks fireblade) is impressive. I highly recommend it.
The game was fun and my opponent had good spirits even though the game for him was more or less move forward and die. The table had tons of LOS blocking terrain, but not enough to hide everything and even though he could claim cover as all of his army had 2+ armor saves or 4+ Invulnerable saves, it really didn't do him any good. The tau just forced a ton of saves and every 1 or 2 he rolled was a wound. It didn't help that his advance rolls were horrible. He never rolled higher than a 3 (several were 1s) and it was just a slow walk.
I think the final lesson of this game is never bring a knife to a gun fight.
