so looking at moving to bigger models i was wondering if infantry is a must?
if not then who can pull off a good no infantry list?
i mean i know that you can run knights of course but what about all tanks?
can you run all vehicles for marines and be competitive, how about all dreads etc?

As you mentioned, knights are a thing.

I've faced some marine lists where the only infantry were a tech marine or two, and the rest of the list was just vehicles bullying my units off the table.

I haven't kept up on guard, but I imagine they have rules that support a tank company playstyle.

Tau can get away with running mostly big suits, but you might need a few little suits or other units for support.

'Nids can run 'nidzilla.

Drukhari need their little guys, but you can have your whole army embarked in transports alongside monsters like talos/cronos if you want.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Armoured Companies are mean.

I'd rather face Knights than tanks.

I'd love to see a Nidzilla vs Knight battle.

Many factions can do zero infantry.

The easiest are the Guard & Tau.
But you can do it easily with SM, Orks, Chaos....

In my experience a LOT of that battle will depend on if its objective driven or not. Knights run a gun-line very effectively so in a straight kill situation they can be very tough opponent because they are quite happy to sit back and shoot.

With objectives that force them to come into the middle of the board it changes things a lot

You just need two UNITS, not two Battleline units.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

Lord Solar Leontus and the tank commanders then a lot of tanks and sentinels.
You are not required to take any battle line units in your army in 10th, being battle line just allows you to take six of each unit and some rulesets give them extra rules.

Holly... I definitely need reread core rules. Nice then. So even Leontus not required just few tank commanders.

I know that imperial guard "armored company" was a thing in 3rd edition and other editions. 3 leman russ tanks is the "smallest" legal army I have seen models wise.

I think it also depends on the flavor of Knights. I play Chaos with a Rampager as my warlord, so I'm usually quite happy to rush forward and chop things in half.

AdMech can do Cawl & their vehicles (but you really need the Datasmiths with the robots).

If its enough for you to just not have the infantry keyword anywhere in your army, then most factions can do this, I think the only armies that must have some infantry (keyword) are:
Drukhari
Votann
Agents of the Imperium

Everything else has monsters/mounted/vehicle characters and enough other choices of monsters/mounted/vehicle to build up the army.

You could make a zero infantry Agents list.
But you'd have to be open to using Legends & things most people believe to be "bad".
Inquisitor Karamazov
Blackstars
Deathwatch veteran bikes
Allied knights
Assorted things from the Unaligned pdf
A Warhound titan. (Assuming your aiming for a 2k list)

Hmm, looking at that? I have everything there save for the Inquisitor....
I might have to give this mess a try.

Oh man! You've got a 40k scale Warhound!

I'm jelly. I could never afford one, and even if I could I'd be terrified of working with such a big chunk of resin.

Here's my idea for 1970 points of well balanced super casual pickup game level and fun army without infantry... and with only 3 models!

Imperial Knights

Knight Castellan

Knight Castellan
440 pts
Banner of Macharius Triumphant, plasma decimator; 2 shieldbreaker missile launchers; 2 twin meltaguns; twin siegebreaker cannon, volcano lance; titanic feet

Allied Units

Warhound Titan
1100 pts
2x Warhound vulcan mega‑bolter
