Hi all,

I was at the Beachhead Expo in Bournemouth last weekend and saw Carnevale on the TTCombat stand - and it spoke to me. Skirmish game in renaissance Venice with a heavy Lovecraft bent to it is ticking an awful lot of boxes for me. And the pre-coloured terrain looks both gorgeous and incredibly convenient.

Anyone playing? Any tips, pitfalls to avoid? Starter box for £45 including 2 gangs, rules, dice, measuring tools and scenery seems like a stupidly good deal.

I'm right there with you. I've been watching Carnevale from the side lines for a couple of years now, but never bought in...yet

Only thing I can really add is, if you or someone you know has a 3D printer, they do offer STLs of some of their products here:

My group got pretty into it after a couple of Adepticons ago, where I picked up a mess of the stuff. It's a fun game, and works well with 3-4 players, so that's a bonus. As usual, we slid off a little bit (we tend to hop game systems anyway...), but it is one that we'd like to come back to.

One of the only "issues" was that the rules had a couple of version updates so things were a little wonky, but I think that recently got addressed with the new starter set and new rules PDF with all the updates, etc. Unit rules are available online, so that helps, too.

Finding scenarios can be a bit tricky, as most of them were in the original rulebook, but not available as PDF at the time (not sure if that's changed yet), and it really wants scenarios with crazy objectives and so on. If you're playing just a "beat the other guy up" game, it's ok, but not that interesting. Some of the scenarios were really fun asymmetrical things, and the addition of the different sub-objective "achievement" kinda things (forget what they were called) encouraged you to do crazy stuff, which made it fun.

I wouldn't say it's a good "competitive" kinda game, so if you're wanting tournament level type games, it's not real strong there. For narrative gaming, though, it's pretty solid.

I've been looking at it for a long time as well, and have jumped in on the Tribe to get some cheap STLs. They lured me in with a free month and I've stayed on, though I haven't played any games yet. They've started posting the rules, unit cards, and scenarios on the TableTop Combat website, if you are interested in taking a look at them.

I was close to pulling the trigger on the starter because I wanted the terrain and stuff.

However, I had a hard time tracking it down and ultimately never followed through on it.

I love a lot of there miniatures, and got a fair few to paint. If the miniatures are what you like they really do have a lot of great ones.
