Hey guys. I hate to open this without a rulebook reference, but I will update it when I get to one. I just don't want to forget because I think this is an important question.
Can a squad with bolters and assault weapons elect to fire only the assault weapons in order to be allowed to assault?
There's something in the dakka FAQ about how models carrying rapid fire weapons may not fire in the assault phase, etc. And something about electing to only fire one plasma shot. But I am fairly sure the shooting rules allow /squads/ to choose a target and fire, but not models.
This has a major major impact for drop pod armies with 2 meltaguns and bolters, or 2 flamers and bolters, whose players assume they are able to charge after firing if they don't fire their bolters. There're some other impacts I'm sure, but that's the one that I see the most.
Anyone have a conclusive ruling on this?

The rulebook is clear on the point. It says you can shoot some of the guns. Assault away.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!
