In person? I understand that they're wood... Is it grainy, or smooth? Do they look the same painted as if they were plastic? I've made some pods using the pvc method and they're just a bit small for my taste. Plus, I didn't make enough and I can't find the exact parts to make more.

If that upsets your fluff stomach, buy a case of "it's just a game"-bizmo and get over it.

I ordered three and assembled one so far. They're more like a wooden model kit than a their buildings are: lots of pieces to put together and the directions are a little sparse. The wood is NOT grainy at all, but because of some gaps etc. I'll probably do a coat of Mr. Surfacer or some other sandable texture to help fill in. If you have patience, they're well worth it; if you want something to slap together and go, stick with the PVC route.

But would you say that it's as smooth as a plastic vehicle is? Will they hold GW paint fine? I did read the painting article on them, but I'm not sure if I trust the manufacturer on that specific fact

It's wood. Just blast it some spray sealant (like primer) before painting. So long as you sanded any rough spots, it will be just as smooth as plastic and will hold paint even better.

Syr, how time-consuming is building the kits? Right now I'm working on foamboard drop pods, and there are dozens of pieces to be cut for each pod, so I'm thinking about getting the Ozzie pods if assembly doesn't take hours and hours.

First one took me several hours; I imagine the next two will go quicker just due to increased expertise. I'd say figure on the time it would take you to put together a standard model kit.

My buddy (pcerretti) put some of the buildings together and they painted up fine. I think a spray like krylon (which has more teeth than most primers) should do fine, but if you're sketchy, take N667's advice. As I said, I'm going to use some kind of texture or sandable primer to help hide the imperfections...

Mr. Surfacer (and really any Gunze Sanyo product) is good good stuff, I just haven't tried it on wood (though I'm sure it will work fine there too).
