Hi

Coming back to 40k after a two year break for WHFB; I stopped playing right before this edition was released, but after the new codex for the guard was out.

Flipping through the new rulebook, I'm stratching my head on how do deal with some of the latest changes- leadership check to pick targets being the biggest one.

Any opponent who has played against IG before will target officers, particularly the one with the flag...  and hv weapon teams are going to take it on the chin as well.

---

How do IG players deal with this tactical problem?

===

One thought I've had is to stick officers in chimeras...  but wouldn't I lose the benefits of Iron Discipline and the rerolls from the flag?

And at least with the hv weapons squads, I can just push the weapons down to infantry squads.  Means more IG to paint... but keeps the weapons alive.  It will mean I lose ~2/3 hv weapons per 750 points...  but I live with it.

Any other things I should be aware of?

hide the officer squad. give him the macharian cross, a standard and maybe a mortar. hide him to keep the leadership bubble out of harm's way.

and heavy weapons teams are still effective, they only have three alblative wounds now, true, but they still put out a lot of firepower. Just like everything with gaurd, you just need lots of them to be effective.

Also, chameleoline with heavy weapons squad in heavy cover make for difficult targets to dislodge, but there are a million ways to mix the doctrines depending on your preferences.

Another option is to fill the field with JO squads. You have the HQ unit, 2-3 JO squads from troops and the option to add 1 more for each weapon team selected with a Heavy slot. If your tank free, you could have 6 or 7 different units on the table to provide leadership. With a tank heavy force, you'll have 4 or 5 units (but then the opponent will be shooting at the Russes & not the JO squads). Not a fool proof option, but should keep your leadership on the board for the first half of a game. And if you have not reduced your opponents ability to shoot down your leadership by then, your lossing the game anyways.

If you are that worried about having your HQs picked off (I don't see the problem -- my opponents are always gunning for the squads with las/plas, etc) then give each squad a vet sgt & Close order drill = LD9 all arround.

Clear the battlefield and let me see

Anti-tank squads are pretty much nerfed, though more experienced players than I are fans of the triple-missile launcher variety. Mostly, I just liek to put lascannon in the ten-man squads and let them work as semi-resilient jack-of-all-trades units.

A triple autocannon squad with Jungle Fighters situationally can be jokes - 6 S7 AP4 36" shots from an invisible unit hovering at the flank of his vehicles...

Best solution to HQ problem is just to keep'em nice and cheap. I like to give a PHQ the HI and COD myself, so the opponent can shoot either the one with LD10 and +2 W, or the one with the flag. I buy him a power weapon and Medallion Crimson in my more delusional moments - hey, 5 points for 4 I5 power sword attacks? - even though it makes the squad more expensive.

When soldiers think, it's called routing.

IG can still be devastating...witness the way that Dakka Detachment One took "Best Team Tacticians" at AdeptiCon 2006's 40K Team Tournament.

A lot depends on your doctrine choices, and how you want to play.
