Subject: Chaos Terminators - bases?
|
 |
Infiltrating Broodlord

Hey everyone, I'm about to start assembling a bunch of Chaos Terminators. I'd like to eventually build a Plaguewing, but I'm first going to get a squad going in my normal Death Guard army. The miniatures seem to overpower the 25mm bases though, especially the autocannon termies. Having seen the loyalist termies looking awesome on 40mm bases, I'm considering putting my Death Guard Termies on 40mm bases just for the look. My question is: would this be tactically stoopid? I know I'll be able to get fewer in btb in close combat. But I'll be able to space them out wider vs ordnance. The main thing that's worrying me is deep striking 7 models with 40mm bases...the larger bases might seriously restrict my landing spots, and/or cause me to lose more models than I would with 25 mm bases. All you loyalist termie players, do the new 40mm bases really detract from the tactical viability, especially as regards deep striking? Or am I worried over nothing? (Cross-posted to 40K Tactics)

if you are planning on going with a heavy terminator army as it appears you are by the plaguewing statement than I would definitely go with the 40mm bases. Havnig seen (and had) more than one full unit of deep striking 25mm based terminators wiped out by a single plasma cannon shot I definitely think it's worth it.
Also the tactical advantage of being able to spread them out a bit more, and being less vulnerable to template weapons is helpful too. As for deep striking, yes, you will have to be a little more careful, though personally with my deathwing I rarely DS more than one squad of terminators anyway, as when you have so few models it's best to start with as many on the table as possible.

Oh yeah, I didn't even think of the small blast covering all of them on the deepstrike. Good point!
Ok, I'll definitely go with 40mm bases then, thanks!

I seem to recall that 40mm is the standard for Termies now, too. Am I wrong?

Depends. The new termies, starting with the new Grey Knights and now the current plastic loyalist termies, come with 40mm rounds. However, the old plastic, and most of the current metalic non-grey knight termies, including the Chaos termies, as well as all of the old OOP metal loyalist termies came or come with 25mm rounds. GW has said that one should use whatever base they came with or whatever the current figure comes with, owners choice.

The rulebook states you can use any base you want as long as it is the same size or larger than what came with the model.
I converted my 10 man chaos termie squad up to 40 mm. It makes them look a lot beefier when compared to normal marines or termies on 25 mm bases.
