Hurricon 2006 <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Battle</st1:place></st1:city> Report

Ok folks, first I’ll tell you about the event. It was awesome. There was about 20 people there I believe, and pretty much every army was represented. Space Marines, Chaos (Standard armies as well as World Eaters, Death Guard, and Thousand Sons) Eldar, Tau, Orks, Dark Eldar (2 of them!), LaTD, 13th Company, Witch Hunters, Necrons, etc. They were giving out tons of prizes. The had 1st-3rd for best overall, 1st-3rd for best painted army, 1st-3rd for best sportsman, and 1st-3rd for best general. Also they introduced a new category which was best painted single miniature. Which also got 1st-3rd prizes. Basically 1st was a plaque, 2nd a box of guys, and 3rd small blister. Well except for the sweet battle axe for first place! We had about 12 tables set up, with had all kinds of terrain. It was a very healthy mix of tables with so much terrain they could be considered nothing short of a city or factory complex, and others that were so sparse they had 4-5 pieces of rocks or 2 forests and some hills etc. As for my list, I was basically tired of my losing slump I seem to have fallen into (1st two tournaments ever where I haven’t won any prize besides a certificate) in trying out all these new lists that just didn’t seem to work for me.  So I went back to thinking competitively and made up a version of my old NL list:

9 Furies

<strong style="">First Game[/b]

The mission is Unplanned Assault.

His list: 13th Company. No Wulfen! He played them like SW but with all the benefits 13th Co has. I may be a little off but he had 1 long fang squad with 2 missile launchers and 2 lascannons, 3 grey slayers squads with 2 plasma, and champ with p.fist 1 bloodclaw biker squad with p.fists, wolf lord on a bike who traveled with the bloodclaws, a rune priest and a wolf priest who went with one of the grey slayer squads. All the characters had frost blades and I believe the priests both had plasma pistols.

For those of you who don’t know, this is the mission where you have to roll in turn 3 to see what the objective is. 1-2 capture terrain, 3-4 cleanse, 5-6 is VP’s. You also only start with troops and infiltrating units. Well doesn’t affect an army in which every model has scout! Very very little terrain. I had 1 forest and some walls and he had 3 village type buildings a hill and fence. There was a pond/lake and 1 forest in the middle. I had no choice but to set up one of my raptor squads outside cover to get the charge on a squad he had on the left. My raptor squad and cc troops squad set up behind the forest away from the sight of most of his guys. My heavies set up in the forest and behind the wall in my corner.

Before turns: He gets his scout move. He moves everything away from me except one squad that he moves forward to rapid plasma me.

Turn 1: I go first. My raptors on my right jump forward. On the left they jump into the woods to gain their stealth adept ability. I lose 1 to difficult terrain. My heavies open up killing a few grey slayers that are going to shoot on the right raptors. His turn: He shoots the crap out of both raptor squads and I lose 2 on the right (but 2 of his guys overheated and failed armour saves!) and 4 on the left. I would have lost more but 4+ cover thanks to stealth! He also plasmas 3 guys in my cc troop.

Turn 2: No furies. No oblits. Lord comes and decides to try and get in charge range of some guys. Bikes Turbo. I open up on the heavies and grey slayers killing 1 heavy and a few more greys. My raptors shoot and charge the greys on the right and the priests and lord on my left. The lord also charges (thanks to a 6 on the fleet roll). Between the lord and raptors I kill all the greys and put a wound on one of the priests. He kills 2 raptors in return. The raptors on the right kill all but the p.fist guy who in turn kills one raptor (bad rolling).  His turn: He kills of the rest of my cc troop with much rapid bolt and plasma fire. His lord and bikes charge my bikes and kill 4. I kill 2 but don’t break thanks to undivided. My lord kills off both priests (only 1 had invulnerable saves) and consolidates into the biker battle. His priests wiped out the raptors before dying though.

Turn 3: The objective is capture terrain. No furies. My oblits come down and give the grey slayers who killed my troop a little taste of plasma in return killing 3. My heavies open up on his and kill a lascannon guy. In assault he kills another biker but that’s it due to his rolling. My biker and lord kill off the rest besides his lord and 1 p.fist. My raptors on the left make short work of the lone p.fist sarge and consolidate 5 or 6. His turn: he kills a raptor on the right with the heavies (he had them set up in the house so only 1 could see the raptors in their current position and advances on the oblits with his grey slayers. He charges my oblits who kill 3 of his guys but he kills them with the p.fist guy. My lord kills his but he puts a wound on me. The biker leaders kill each other.

Turn 4: My Lord charges his grey slayers and the raptors charge the heavies. The raptors kill the heavies and the lord almost wipes the slayers. At which point he wants to call it.

Left on board: Half a raptor squad, lord, 1 undamaged troop and all the heavies. All he has is his below half slayers who were in assault with my lord.

Me: <strong style="">18pts[/b]. I get full points for my lord being alive, his troops being dead, and the raptor squad being in his zone.

Him: <strong style="">3pts[/b]. No quarters. His general is dead.

<strong style="">Second Game [/b]

Archeotech Excavation.

This is the one where you take turns revealing counters till one is the objective. Said objective is worth +300 VP’s.

This time we played on one of the tables with a good amount of terrain. Various factory terrain was spaced out on the board. Silos, closed buildings with ladders, and walkways in between, etc.

Lance’s List: Dark Eldar

Large squad of mandrakes (that hidden set up thing is quite annoying), Lord with incubi in raider, 1 squads of warriors on foot with 2 dark lances, wyches in raider, 2 more warrior squads in raiders, warp beast pack, and 2 large squads of jet bikes.

Ok he started the 2 raiders, mandrakes, and foot squad on the board. The rest was to come in via webway portals. Ok I set up my heavies up on some silos, lord, raptors, and cc troop on the left side of my corner, and the bikes and other raptors on the right. He hides his raiders as best as he can, puts the foot slogging I got first turn.

1st turn: Raptors charge up behind a silo and the bikes turbo down the long table edge. The cc troops advance towards a counter. The lord and raptors remain where they are hidden on the other flank. My heavies could just see the back of a raider. Despite being obscured 4 krak missiles easily downed the fragile raider. 5 guys died in the crash. His turn: The other raider and warriors advance. The raider squad disembarks and drops the webway portal. Mandrakes (well one of the potential squads) advances towards raptors.

Turn 2: Furies come out. No oblits. My raptors on the right hop out and shoot up the foot squad of warriors. The bikes turbo boost onto the webway portal, blocking it. My heavy squad shoot the entangled raider squad, pinning them (preventing the other portal from being deployed). The furies charge his raider squad. My raptors charge the warrior squad. He kills 1 I kill 5-7 of them. It helps that I wound on 2’s. He’s below half, outnumbered, and my scary raptors have visage. He breaks and I wipe him out. Same results with the furies. His turn: The mandrakes are revealed next to the raptors. The mandrakes shoot felling another raptor. The mandrakes then charge the raptors. They kill 2, and I kill a few in return. The raptors hit and run out.

Turn 3: My heavies continue to fire at the pinned raider squad, wiping them out. My raptors triple flame and assault the mandrakes. Furies join in. At which point he calls the game.

His stuff was dead. 1 webway was blocked, the other destroyed (the other raider squad had it). Game over. I’m first done twice in a row.

Me: <strong style="">18pts.[/b] All units intact. His HQ considered dead (off the table). I own the terrain obviously.

Him: <strong style="">3pts[/b] I think.

Left: I had everything he had a few warriors with something around 1200pts not able to come in.

<strong style="">Third Game[/b]

Suicide Squad.

Extra VP’s for having your suicide squad die.

This board had the most terrain out of all of them. Something like10 ruined buildings.

James’s army: Snakebite orks. Tough army. He had 2 huge boarboyz squads, two 20 ork madboyz squads, three 10-15 ork madboyz squads, pigdok with helpers, a huge grot squad with slaver and squig, battlewagon, decked out warboss on a boar, 3 killa khanz, and a looted lemun russ. Ok so mad boyz are basically cheap scarboyz with a chance of going crazy. But with the strength and toughness of a marine, who cares?

Ok he sets up his hoard fairly far forward. Piggies in front with the warboss. He mounts one of the 20 man squads in the wagon. One of the boarboyz are his suicide squad, mine are the raptors with flamers. I infiltrate the flamers on one side close to one madboy squad and the grots. The others I sat comfortably in buildings to wait for his boars to come.

For those of you who don’t know his pigdock gets to add +1 to the strength of some of the ork squads if he rolls a 3+ or something. He rolls and gives it to the suicide squad and the mounted madboyz. That’s right… <strong style="">20[/b] S5 orks mounted in the wagon!

1st turn: I go first. I shoot the piss out of the battlewagon but fail to do anything thanks to his amazing armour plate’s rolls and my bad rolls. My lord crept forward into the building. The infiltrating raptors hop forward and get an amazing flame show on one madboy squad. He had them so tightly packed in the building my 3 flamers and the bolt pistols killed all but 3! (he didn’t get any saves) I attempted to charge the rest. I needed a 3… I got a 1 and a 2 for my terrain rolls… Ok his turn. He rolls his crazy tests and only one madboyz squad went nuts. The guys in the wagon proceeded to attack each other killing 5. The madboyz in the back advance through a building. The battlewagon which now still has 15 orks in it zooms 13” forward and drops out his boyz. All the piggies run forward. He rolls 2 6’s for both fleet rolls! The remaining madboyz of one squad, another full squad, and grot squad on the left open up on the raptors downing 3 I believe. The lemun russ fires on the heavies and kills 1 of them and 2 out of the troops. Bless chaos for stealth adept! And the killa khanz kill off a raptor. He charges my bikes (yet another 6 on the terrain roll) and kills 4. I kill a few but don’t break.

2nd turn: Furies drop our. Oblits come out. Finally! They both came in! 1st time all day! My raptors on the right jump into flaming positions on the intact madboy squad and the furies surround the madboyz before they chop up my bikers. The other raptors and the lord jump out and make ready to roast some pig erm… um… I mean engage his suicide squad in cc. The oblits heavy bolter the pigs, raptors open up and lord fleets. The raptors on the right flame away killing something like 8 boyz. The other raptors fire into the pigs. Heavies try to take out the wagon but just immobilize it and knock off a weapon. Raptors and my lord attack the suicide squad and wipe them out between them. The furies charge and throw down their 27 I5 attacks, killing the madboyz before they can kill any more bikes. My flamers cut chunks into the large madboy squad killing another 6-7. He downs 1 raptor. The lord consolidates into his killa khanz and the raptors can’t make it anywhere with a 1. His turn, The pigs and warboss charge forward on the left. On the right the grots move in to swarm the engaged raptors. The other madboyz squad in the back advance to the edge of the building. He fires the leman and the madboyz into the raptors killing 4. the battle wagon shoots and my entrenched heavies but do nothing to them. His pigs and boss charge the raptors and the grots swarm the raptors! The raptors on the right go down to the nob and warboss whom strike at I6 and maybe 5 for the nob. (for some reason. can’t remember why, boss used choppa). My lord designates his attacks on the only khan in base and kills it. Preventing him from being insta-killed. The pigs consolidate into him. My surviving raptors kill off the remains of the madboy squad. The grots inflict 3 wounds of which I fail all of them! <strong style="">3[/b] Raptors are pulled down by the grot swarm! The 2 remaining raptors hit and run out of combat.

3rd Turn: The raptors jump back into flaming range. The furies and bikes jump forward to help out the lord. The oblits slog forward to help out as well. My heavies shoot the battlewagon yet again but only knock off its remaining weapons thanks to his armour plates rolls. He always dinks the pen! The raptors flame the grots killing 8-10 of them (tightly packed from the previous combat) and then charge in. The furies, bikes, cc troops and oblits make it into combat with the pigs and boss. Every one of the pigs died, mostly thanks to the furies. Furies are the BEST against orks! The lord hits the khanz but once again armour plates and my crappy rolls save him. The khanz only wounded the lord once (he missed a lot) but I saved it. The raptors kill a bunch of grots who manage to pull down another leaving the champ. But the little guys ran and the champ gave chase, cutting them all down! The furies consolidate into the madboyz in the building. At this point he deliberates for a few seconds and calls it. I offered to keep going but he wanted to go smoke :-).

Me: <strong style="">17pts[/b] We agreed my lone champ would have been killed by the madboyz he was advancing towards whether he wanted to or not, as I would have charged him. The furies didn’t take any casualties and were in his zone. My raptors were dead or fleeing so no perfect 18 this time :-(.

Him: <strong style="">5pts[/b] +1 for his suicide dying but -1 for not controlling a quarter which the furies contested.

Left at the end: I had an unwounded lord, 2 above half troop squads, 2 bikes, and all the furies. He had he leman, a useless and soon to be dead battlewagon, engaged and soon to be dead madboyz, 1 slightly damaged madboyz squad, and 2 khanz. We had about 45mins left and it was pretty obvious what was going to happen.

Awards: Since there was so many you could win multiple times. I won best overall and took home the battle axe! YEAH! I also won best painted army and 3rd placed general (slightly confused about that one).

So yea! Hope you like the report but beware… I’m back in the competitive saddle and ready to rock at sci-fi this weekend!

Hurricon was this Fri-Sat. in orlando. Basically it's a big gaming convention. They played fantasy on Sat. and 40k on Sun along with many other games.

Are you familiar with some GW sponsored events that give out swords and various other "weapons" as prizes? Well this one gave out a battle axe for best over-all winner. Which I won.

Cool, good job. I can't believe I didn't know that Hurricon had a 40k tournament... oh well. In fact, I didn't know (and still dont) that much about Hurricon to begin with.

So yea! Hope you like the report but beware? I?m back in the competitive saddle and ready to rock at sci-fi this weekend!

Apparently one employee told me they upped it to 26 persons, but we all know how unreliable they can be.

Especially about things going on in their own store...

The DE player made a boo-boo. Triggering the DE Webway Portal is the similar to firing a heavy weapon. You may not trigger it if the character/unit carrying it has moved. Therefore, he shouldn't have moved/disembarked and deployed the WWP.

Oh well. All I knew was he had to deploy it in the shooting phase. It didn't save him anyway. I showed him the error of relying to heavily on those portals. He even said so himself.

On a side note: I should totally bring in the battle axe I won on Sat. and we can take it to anyone who's a bad sportsman (a.k.a dick). What do you guys think?

What is the rule for blocking a webway portal? I could not find it in the DE (2nd printing) Codex.

The only thing that you can physically block from coming out of a webway portal is foot units. Skimmers, jetbikes etc. can move straight over any unit attempting to block so long as there is suffient movement to do so.

Darrian: the webway portal is treated as a table edge in which reserves enter from. Since no units can come within 1" of an enemy model, the opponent can block Dark Eldar foot units from entering play by surrounding it. However, like stated in the opening of my post, the player can't prevent skimmers and jetbikes from moving on to the table since those units are allowed to move over enemy units so long as they end their move more than 1" from enemy models.
