Silly question, but it is keeping me up at night, or at least it is keeping me from gluing the shoulder pads on my marines.

What shoulder (the marine's left or right) do you put the smooth shoulder pad on?  I am leaning towards putting it on the marine's left, along the lines of "loyalist" marines whose Chapter heraldry adorns that shoulder.

Is there any convention on this issue?  I have seen many squads, mostly god specific and/or metal with the (marine's) left shoulder sporting horns/skulls and the Legion marking on his right as if they were a "loyalist" Terminator.

So, are there any guidelines to follow?  Will my band of ne'er do wells be mocked for their shabby dressing?

Apologies if this is silly.... I'd rather not tear off 16 shoulder pads...

I´d only keep the rule of 1Clear/1Spikey if my Marines has a legion specific symbol.

But Its CHAOS man, they do whatever annoys the Imps.

With the galaxy as large as it is the odds of the average guardsmen seeing and fighting a marine or MEQ are relatively slim. Unfortunately the guardsmen in your (and anyone else who plays IG's) army are the REALLY, REALLY LUCKY ones that fight marines ALL the time...

Pre-Heresy, the Chapter Badge was on the right. This was changed after the Heresy (and after the studded left shoulder pad was replaced with a normal one)

Loyalist Termiators kept the Chapter Badge on the right because they already had the Crux Terminatus embedded in the left pad.

If your Chaos Legion is one of the original ones, their Chapter Badges should therefore generally be on the right... but they're generally not as concerned about uniformity as their loyalist brethren, so do what you like, really.

Wow Insaniak, I had no idea the founding Legions should be different. I always assumed left shoulder was blank/badged, ala all those marine armies out there ... Well, at least my Chaos boys are only Alpha Legion successors!

Thank you very much!

Now, what Legion......

Edit:  A friend let me look through some of his  White Dwarfs.  In the Index Astartes: Black  Legion article  it shows all of the power armoured(3+ save)  marines (pre-heresy Luna Wolf, pre-heresy Sons of Horus, Black Legion) sporting the legion badge on their left shoulder!  The two pre-heresy blokes have the bumpy shoulder pad on their right!  This is contrary to what you say, and, the first site I could find, the French GW page's article on Space Marine armour confirms your view.

A sloppy bit of work on WD's/GW's part, or a little bit of revisionist history?
