UK GT Heat 1 Round 1

Hello Everyone,

My buddy Mike and I decided to bite the bullet and go to the UK GT Heat 1 this year.  I must say to all of the Americans who have not been to the UK, it is quite a fascinating place.  I highly recommend taking the opportunity to go and enjoy the landscape, beer, club scene, beer and beer.

Well – I could talk about the cathedral in Chester and walking along the city walls at night, but we’re here for some battle reports.  So here goes.  The following will eventually be a summary of my six rounds of battle with our “Saim-Heinous” list (Mike and I took the exact same army).

Round 1.   – I played Richard who had space wolves and here’s the armies.

.

I setup as follows and tried to use cover as much as I could while keeping my vehicles within striking distance.

.

Luck has it that I went first.  I moved up to setup for minimizing the effects of the scouts when they eventually come on board.  I was able to immobilize the rhino with the grey hunters and negate any return fire from that unit.  I destroyed the ven dread’s plasma cannon and attempted to shake the predator, but failed.

.

Richard’s first turn only had two vehicles that could shoot.  Other vehicles and units moved into various advancement positions.  Alas, the predator cuts through one of my falcons like a knife through butter.  All I heard on the coms was ‘We have a Purple Falcon down, we have a Purple Falcon down.”  (movie reference from Black Hawk Down).

.

I initiated the final maneuvers to minimize the kill potential of the scouts.  Stunned the predator and destroyed a large number of the grey hunters.  Farseer Ilianth lost a brief battle with some slaaneshi daemon and took a wound from perils of the warp.

.

Richard moved the vindicator forward and various other units again into advancement positions.  The vindicator blew apart another falcon leaving it in a flaming pile of wreckage (Another Purple Falcon down – sounds almost like the movie).  The scouts came on, but their melta shot failed to land home.  The dreadnought attempted to charge and grab a hold of a falcon, but the crew was able to gain more altitude and pull out of harms way.

.

Farseer Ilianth is a little perturbed at these events and now decides to go on a killing rampage.  He chucks a spear through the back of the dreadnought into the pilot’s skull, destroying the machine.  A guided falcon stuns the predator.  The scouts and the vindicator are destroyed by wave serpents.

.

Realizing they are severely outgunned, the grey hunters pull back.  The valiant terminators fire an assault cannon and assault the same wave serpent.  Alas, the vehicle is only shaken.  The blood claws continue to move into a hiding position.

.

The serpents and the falcon move to attack the terminators killing two and destroy the remaining grey hunters.  One guardian unit assaults the predator, plants haywire grenades and destroys the bane of the first Purple Falcon down.  Another guardian unit moves to take one quadrant for end game objectives.

.

Richard is in a very tight spot, but the rage of the wolf will not be quieted just yet.  The terminators administer the emperor’s wrath and destroy the guardians that assaulted the predator.  The blood claws continue to hide.

.

The wave serpents and remaining falcon move to kill the terminators and achieve end game objectives.  Farseer Ilianth goes on another rampage and destroys a rhino in HTH.  I warned him not to hit the fuel tank, but alas – he did and it blew up causing him enough grief to take another wound.

.

Blood claws hide.

.

I destroy the rhino, but have not other shots.  The game ends with two quadrants in my favor for an additional 1,125 VPs with a total VP differential of ~2,000 points.

In summary, I could have possibly avoided losing the one falcon to the vindicator.  I also should have setup more to attempt to eliminate the blood claws in the final round.  Alas, live and learn.    Let me know what your thoughts are on this battle rep.  I know that there are a lot of pics, but I wanted to get everyone round by round details.  I figure it will take me about a week to do each one since I still have a lot of painting to do for Adepticon.

Thanks guys.  I'm working on round 2 which was against Tau played by solid player, Isreal (a spaniard). It was a tight game throughout.  Hopefully I can have it up by mid next week.

Fantastic report. When I started seeing your armies show up on various forums after the GT, it was great to see the type of army that you brought. I enjoy seeing how you ran it vs. other tourney players. I am looking forward to the rest of your reports and pics.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

UK GT Heat 1 Round 2

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to keep my word by getting one of these done a week.  This is the second installment in a six round set.  My second game was against Isreal, one of the group of ~12 spaniards that made the trip to the UK.  The interesting thing about this battle was that Isreal speaks very little english and I speak absoluting no spanish.  Alas - this game went very smoothly though.  Isreal was playing Tau.  We both knew enough about each other's armies that we were able to move through the game really quick with just hand gestures.
So here’s the armies.

Argh, these pictures are kind frustrating.  I can see the first report, but not the second report.  Heck, I even checked it several times last night and could see the new posting.  Alas, I don't know what to tell ya'.  The 2nd battle report pics are the same format as the first battle report pics.  Yet sometimes they appear and other times, they don't.  Hmmmm.  Anyone have any thoughts?

Troll country

That was a classic 4th edition battle between the two armies with the best skimmer tanks. Sounds like your wise decisions paid off as the game progressed.

Now do not take me the wrong way but it seems it is rather easy to win with this type of army and I am wondering when GW will start to curb these types of lists... as Rhino Rush was eventually neutered and 60 man Ulwthe seer councils at last year's heats saw an end to that.

Thanks for the fix. The diagrams are very well done and very clear and concise. I'm a bit suprised he didn't try and deep strike his Stealths. His guns were useless unless he got to your rear armor. By the looks of the pics and report, he had a good chunk of points that did absolutely nothing while you took your whole army against a piece of his. The Stealths needed to be in the fight.

Green Bloater-The new Eldar codex is about to come out (some already have it) and you can still run mechanized. One thing to consider is point values got altered for some of our favorite weapons. You will still see mechanized Eldar, but without so many starcannons, in turn, will drastically alter how the army plays. I very much doubt GW will dictate how you can build your Eldar army beyond the confines of its' Codex. The Rhino Rush and Seer Counsels were pretty much crushed because of rule changes. We won't see 5th edition for 3 more years at least and another Eldar codex for years to come.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Don't take this the wrong way, but a slowed monkey could have won against that Tau list. Who takes the MP/Flamer combo?

Added to which, your opponent seems totally incompetent. "Hmm... all my opponent's vehicles are in plain sight on the far left side of the board and my Broadsides, the ultimate vehicle killer, just made its Reserves roll... so I guess I'll stick it in the middle where it can't see anything or shoot anything. Yeah, that will work. Genius!"

That has to be the worst mistake. There are plenty of others.

Taking odd-numbers (especially in Crisis Suit teams).

Taking one big unit of three Piranhas instead of three units of one.

"Hmm... I'll JS-notJ with one Tau unit, so one big expensive unit is out in the open to be shot at and even if it survives it will be totally out of place on the battlefield and lose a turn of shooting."

"I know, my Stealths are unfortunately way out of position due to unlucky deployment. But I'll just let them stand there and do nothing, rather than move them so they can fire while still being protected by their Stealth fields."

"Oh my Ionheads just made their Reserves roll. I'll stick them together, on either side of my Crisis Suits so they have trouble moving, and then I'll move them less than 6.1 inches." (At least, it looks like that's what he did.)

"Hooray, my Piranha squadron with extremely short range anti-tank guns made their Reserves roll. I'll stick them in the middle so they can't see any tanks (not necessarily a bad idea in all honesty) and the just put them by the board edge so they can be easily destroyed and be nowhere near, and no threat to, the enemy. That sounds good."

And so on...

Again, no offence intended, but I fell out of my chair I was laughing so hard when I read this part of your post: "We both knew enough about each other's armies that we were able to move through the game really quick". At least with Tau it seems neither of you knew enough. For example, Broadsides start on the table in Escalation games! That would have made a big difference. Oh, and Stealths no longer halve the distance roll for Nightfighting.

Lol i just realised the guy Stu is on about actually finished 6th......oh well!! I often find this happens in tournament tbh, you see someone play or read a rep where they dont seem to have player that well then they go and finish quite well - its bizarre really. He played the final round next to me and had to be told his broadsides started on, all fun at the GT i guess. Now more reports!!

Hello Everyone,

Ok, here is the third installment of my six battle reports from the UK GT. I played Iain who also was playing a similar version of mech elder. Interestingly, we did not exchange army lists before hand. This made for a very cool game overall.  In order to minimize potential damage to my army, I basically assumed that he had taken dire avengers and fire dragons as his two types of infantry units. I posted the list below before the rounds so that everyone could see what was happening.  So here goes. The armies are below.

Deployment was a little unusual. I didn’t mind Iain’s spread deployment and tried to take advantage it of with my deployment sweeping on one side.

Turn 1: Alas, Iain won the roll to go first and elected to take the first turn.   He moved up into position with some firing, but overall – only a couple minor shaken results.

In my first turn, I moved to pull away from some of the grav tanks in order to minimize any potential from the other half of his forces that are inside vehicles. Shaking a couple grav tanks also minimized the total amount of return fire for the next round (only three tanks could shoot).

During his second round, he pushed forward hoping to down a wave serpent with the fire dragons on the right. Alas, they were still drunk from the night before and only hit four times with none of the shots doing anything. However, the drivers from last nights party did not drink and were able to shoot down one of my wave serpents.

I decided that I needed to work on eliminating a select few units. I focused enough firepower to eliminate the 10-man squad of fire dragons. Alas, that is one less unit that can jump back in a tank and stay protected. Iain could not believe that I was unloading guardians from my grav tanks. He laughed and I quote “What are you going to do with those?”. The guardians charged a falcon and brought it down with a lucky roll of a 5/6 on one of my three grenades that were planted on the underside of the vehicle.

At this point, I felt the number of shots in return fire was starting to dwindle quite a bit for Iain. I figured a squad of 10 fire dragons, a unit of banshees and a falcon down chewed up about 500 points of his force. With basically a 1/3 of his force down and me having six grav tanks left (three being falcons), I felt pretty good about my position.

Iain moved into more firing positions hoping to start eliminating some more of my grav tanks. Nothing of consequence really happened. A shaken falcon and weapon destroyed on a wave serpent.

I moved to at least shake the serpent on the right in order to protect the guardians. I felt the guardians were still a viable threat that Iain had to deal with and in the end could add some more points as a scoring unit in the center of the board.

Iain moved his farseer to duel min in a Mind War, but alas - I was too far off into the distance.  A shaken Falcon and WS were the only real shots of consequence.
I continue to chase after the grav tanks with my guardians as much as I can.  I chose to destroy the fire dragons since it was another soft target that I felt I could get a number of VPs from.  Plus it was another scoring unit that could not get double points at the center of the board if I destroyed it.  My guardians continue to plant grenade after grenade on a wave serpent, but I am only able to shake it again.
Iain moves the fire dragon exarch behind cover.  The other non shaken falcon and wave serpent take shots at a wave serpent and my guardians.  Three of my eldar brethren die to shuriken cannon fire.  Iain starts to move more of his units to the objective at the center of the board.
The guardians continue to chase the one wave serpent and fail to plant a single grenade.  I focused as much fire power on one falcon as I could until I eventually brought it down.  With one falcon left to shoot, I shake the wave serpent with both weapons still left.  I was hoping that this would help keep my guardians alive.
My hope of keeping both squads of guardians alive was only temporary.  The fire dragon exarch made quick work of the two man unit and the wave serpent with only a shuriken cannon left killed one in the other unit.  The fire dragon exarch was able to consolidate into the remaining four guardians.  Iain moved the rest of the units towards the center of the board in hope of getting more victory points.
In the last round, I basically moved my falcons to the center and called it a game at that.  The only combat that we needed to resolve was the fire dragon exarch vs the guardians.  The FD exarch hacked through two of the guardians with ease, but was quickly dispatched by the other two.  I did take some additional shots at the falcon, but I did not show them in the last pic since it had no bearing at all on the final score.
This game went fairly well for me.  I could have taken advantage of the woods a little bit more and actually completely isolated certain parts of his force with little return fire.  I also checked to make sure that Iain had marked which unit belonged in which transport on his roster after the end of the game.  He had squad symbols on the back doors of each grav tank.
.
Overall, my favorite part of this game though was the guardians.  The guardians did more point for point than the aspect warriors.  Quite nice.  Well, that sums things up for now.  Time to start working on round four.
.
Talk to ya' later,

Greg

Interesting. I think i would have played it slightly differently.

Assuming that the pair of trees in the bottom right are fully flush to each other and no LoS through them, i would have stacked the right deployment towards the right and gone completely after the opposing falcon and wave serpent on the right. From the diagram it appears possible that you could have done it so that the opposing grav tanks in the middle had no LoS to your falcons (which are what will kill enemy skimmers really). Then your two wave serpents in the middle are a bit lost really but i guess they might have been able to take on the wave serpent in the middle a bit. Thats how i would have done it anyway but it worked for you!!

The wave serpents and falcons were drawn in AutoCAD and then copied/pasted into PowerPoint.  All of the other army items were created in PowerPoint.  I created all of the pics in PowerPoint since that is the only program that I have available to me for drawing and saving in JPEG format.

I find it interesting that Eldar won Heat 2.  That is quite kewl.
