Subject: Deepstriking Avatar?

I finally found a way to transport the Avatar. I noticed that the Skyleap ability allows the squad to be removed from the board, and deepstrike the following turn. So my Avatar can join the SH squad and come back down the next turn, (please note there is no requirement for SHWs in the entry for Skyleap - the power is granted to the SQUAD and is not based on equipment). Awesome. Mez

pretty sure exarch powers don't work on non-aspect/autarch units. Might want to doublecheck I think page 21.

Hmm. You're right. BUT, you can take an Autarch without SHWs and the squad just lefts him up and carries him away. This is NOT as exciting as a deep-striking Avatar however....

Besides, you can't join an Avatar to any squad now. He is no longer an Independent Character.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

Good try I remain to be convinced about the avatar - it's expensive and slow, it might be a monster in close combat but you've got to get it there first and it's got to kill quite a lot of high value stuff to make it's points back. If you plop one on the table then most people will either try and keep away from it, shoot it or tie it up with cheap stuff. Has anyone come up with a reliable tactic for one?

The main value of the Avatar is not his ability to kill stuff, it's his ability to make everything else fearless.
Even just standing at the back of a shooty infantry army (behind terrain), he makes his points back in units that don't run off the board.
But in theory he could work like the big bug of a nid army. If you can tie something up with cheap models until he gets there, then that would work. Or if you take him as part of an army that moves his same speed and are all extremely tough (Iyanden), then he'll get across the board. In either case, though, a farseer walking behind him fortuning him every turn will increase his survivability. (Just don't join the farseer to the Avatar or his toughness goes to 3.)

I may be experimenting with an Avatar in the near future. While I agree that it is difficult for him to "get his poitns back", he does have other uses. I tend to go for a shooty eldar list so the Avatar can be a useful deterrant unit. Keep him in the middle of my deployment zone (or where ever most of my shooty units are concentrated) and that's not only a lot of fearless shooty units, but also one big hunk'n monster anyone who gets close is going to have to deal with. If people want to shoot him, more power to them, thats fire that isn't going into my shooty death units or my tanks.

I don't have the codex yet, so I have no idea if this is legal- could you attach him to a unit of harlequins with a shadow seer to get the super-night-fight-hard-to-see rule for him. Plus harlies with an avatar would pack quite a punch. Maybe a converted avatar of the laughing god.

You must have missed the post above that said the avatar is no longer an IC. He can't join squads now but he can score and doesn't give up VPs after losing a single wound.

Yeah, Avatar is now a "non-vehicle unit" and monstrous creature, but not an independent character anymore. So he can't join any other unit.
