Hi all

I have built a 1500pt army of Space Marines and I'm having a few problems and want to know whether my list is rubbish or I'm just a lousy player because I'm just not winning lol

First a bit of background so you can understand why I have chosen what I field

Basically I'm fielding a 10th company army of Scouts etc, they are geared up to take to field, get in quick and do damage. I know thats it tactically unwise to use scouts as the mainstay of troop choices so I have geared them up for specific roles, i.e. tank killing and troop killing, I then rely on my other choices for hard hitting or fire support

My list is as followed and please give your honest opinion

HQ

  • Captain with plasma pistol, power weapon, terminator honours
  • 5xSpace Marine Command Squad with 6xInfiltrate and 1xVeteran with Terminator honours and Powerfist

Elite

  • Dreadnought with twin-linked lascannon, missile laucher

Troop

  • 10xScouts with bolt pistol and 1xVeteran with Terminator honours and Powerfist
  • 10xScouts with bolt pistol and 1xVeteran with Terminator honours and Powerfist
  • 8xScouts with 1xMissile laucher, 4xSniper, 3xBoltgun
  • 8xScouts with 1xMissile laucher, 4xSniper, 3xBoltgun

Fast

  • Land Speeder with Typhoon missile upgrade and Multi-melta
  • Land Speeder with Typhoon missile upgrade and Multi-melta
  • 10xAssualt Squad with 1x Flamer, 1xPlasma pistol and 1xVeteran with Terminator honours and Powerfist

Heavy

  • Predator Destructor with Autocannon and Lascannon sponsons

TOTAL COST "1503"points

 

As you can see I rely mostly on hard hitting troops and fast attack to make up for the lack of heavies and elites.

Scouts are designed to eiter infiltrate in and murder things, even vehicles if given the chance and the sniper scouts can assist by pinning or taking out vehicles to make way for other things.

I'm always tweeking so your input or critism with be valued

I'd dink the plasma pistol then find another 8 points to pay for infiltrate on the Captain and to upgrade him to a Master. ("Veteran Captain" supervising the n00b marines if you are a fluff lover) LD10 is nice.

Elite

Dreadnought with twin-linked lascannon, missile laucher

I'm more a fan of assault cannon/missile launcher. Spend the lascannon upgrade points to make it venerable. Also, see comments on Predator.

Troop

Heavy bolter or missile launcher each - cheap and gives them something to do if not inside assault range.

I'd do these as 8 snipers and 8 boltguns.

Fast

Well, if you're not winning, this is the easiest change to make - assault cannon and heavy bolter all the way!

Looks fine. Can go down to eight strong if need be.

Heavy

My personal preference is tllc and x2 HB. One other thing about your vehicles - not counting the speeders - is that you only have two of them, and neither is particularly tough. Generally, marines do best with a focus on either infantry or vehicles as the main target to present to the enemy. Vehicle heavy lists use more than one Predator, Dreadnought, etc., plus Razorbacks for even more armoured targets. Infantry-heavy lists (as one might infer) use mostly infantry with maybe some Whirlwinds and Speeders to back them up as these can stay more or less out of the worst of enemy fire, using their mobility or IF capacity. In your case, probably several small squads of scouts with boltguns and missile launchers would help to ramp up your firepower, or trying to crowbar in another six assault marines to run 2x8 of those guys. Another FA idea is Scout Bikers - somewhat fragile but extremely fast and escalation proof tank hunters. In a standard game, they should be able to melta bomb a tank first turn if you play first - 12" scout, 12" move, 6" assault.

When soldiers think, it's called routing.
