Hello
Im looking to start an army specifically for cityfight, but im having trouble deciding what style of play i want to focus on. We use the new Cities of Death rules, and are playing a rather large game during the Winter Break, but it has inspired me to create an army solely for Cityfight.

What were some things that interested you in your armies?

Any other advice or questions that could help me decide would be greatly appreciated, although I am leaning toward combat, and I already have Orks, Imperial Guard, and a few space marines (which are being used as statues in a few of my buildings )

thanks

I have a 1500+ sized army of Orks, but I haven't played them much at all. I'd think footslogging Orks would be at their absolute best in Cityfight. Lots of cover to afford them saves, lots of buildings to shield them while they advance. You've already got Orks, but I think you could tune them up nicely for Cityfight. Of course "absolute best" is a relative term. For footslogging Orks, that amounts to "at least having a sporting chance."

I play my Blood Angels a lot, they're an incredibly effective list, and I think they'd only be better in Cityfight. CC armies in general will excel when the enemy is forced to get close (although that has to do more with how you set up your table than the actual Cityfight rules).

Foot Orks were made for cityfight.  Burnas, Kommandos Tankbusta boyz, slugga mobs and Dreads/KillaKans make a fierce urban combat force.  All the 4+ cover and the massive amounts of tough troops really make Orks hard to take out.  Unfortunately they are kind of stinky in traditional battlefields.  That said I think they would be a ton of fun in Cityfight.

Imperial Guard have a lot more flexibility than orks in urban combat, but they are really hard to win games with.  Their general wussiness makes them ill-suited for taking ruins from the enemy(close combat is totally the way to go).  I think the key for cityfight IG is to pick a specific set of strategems and go whole hog.  I use preliminary bombardment (combined with improved comms you can mess up his troops, his buildings and his ability to move), Siege Shells, and plunging fire (definitely the least useful of the three but good when you knock down a building full of enemies and want to shoot the entangled survivors).  I take a ton of cheap infantry with flamers and melta guns. Hellhounds and Demolishers and I try to hit one enemy squad with everything at once and bring the building down on them so I can do it again next turn.  Then I charge.

That all sounds good on paper but its hard to pull off.  I'd go with Orks if you've got them, they are more likely to win.  Cityfight is all about playing aggressively, even IG need to play aggressively which is really hard when your people are so wussy.

Thanks for all the specifics and advice, but i guess i didnt make myself clear enough

I do play orks sometimes, they are always fun to play, but im looking for a different army that generally leans towards close combat.

But i'll keep that all in mind

I think it would be a lot of fun to play Tau in cityfight.
It would make the game very _interesting_.....

You have the ability to tear down whole buildings with their big guns, and the extra assault move on all the battle suits means they can move between cover while shooting.

nids are pretty fun in city fight. combat engineers is real nice for them so they get a 5+ cover save once per game. they move through cover on 3 dice, they are fast and nasty in combat.

I used nids in a city fight tournament last week effectively. it was 1250 points and had a flyrant, 2 units of 3 leaping rending warriors, 3 units of 15 gaunts, 3 units of 8 genestealers.

I had turn 2 charges w/ most of my army, genestealers would usually assault turn 3 or so to clean up.

I think a pathfinder heavy eldar list would be real good too, +2 to cover saves in city fight? yes please.

Black Templars are quite efficient in Cities of Death. People give them a lot of flak for being overcosted and unbalanced, but in the dense terrain of a ruined city, they hold their own. I played a 2000 point game that pitted my BT against 1000 Tau and 1000 Orks back over the summer on an urban table. Out of the 60-some Marines I fielded, I think I lost 15 of them. By turn 4, I had completely crushed the Ork assault, and proceeded to kill Tau in H2H since my opponent forgot that I could sweep into squad after squad each turn, effectively allowing me to traverse the effective range of the Tau firepower in close combat the entire time. I killed somewhere around 50 Orks, but only about 20 Tau.

I suppose Blood Angels would be nice too.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

I think it would be fun to do a "freakshow" WH army: zealots, arcoflagellents, 9 penitent engines, ane of the two good assassins...maybe some allied daemonhosts for more freak.

Most of the issues with these in normal 40k are due to them getting shot to bits on their way in, so cityfight would give them a boost. Only problem is lack of frags...

I really like how my Raven Guard play in Cities of Death matches. ( I know, "Blood Angels litght blah blah blah). Use the infiltrate ability, and load up on 5 man scout squads with missile launchers, Shrike and 4 of his guys (expensive I know, but they can take ANY building you want them to, especially when teamed with a Chappy), Elite assault marines for the Furious Assault, and loads of Land Speeders. When I can fit it, I take one 8 man dev squad with 4 las cannons.  I take the same 3 stratagems pretty much every game: Infiltrate to get the scout squads and Shrike into optimal posistions, Ammo Dump so my  Las Cannons are that much more effective, and Plunging Fire; My scouts usually infiltrate as high as possible to get a good view of the field.

This should work with pretty much any SM force Vanilla or not. The stratagems will vary depending on army and playstyle of course, though if you DO take scouts Infiltrate is pretty much a must.
