I ran a search for "tyranid wings" and nothing came up; so here we go:

When you add wings to a tyranid creature, do the wings physically replace a pair of weapon symbiotes (thus the model has six limbs total) or do the wings go on in addition to the two mandatory weapon symbiotes (thus yielding a model with eight limbs)?

The codex wording instructs to add wings in addition to two weapon symbiotes, but that just seems wrong to me.

Also, as a reference, gargoyles are the only tyranid models that come with wings, and THEY only have six limbs.  Gargoyle wings occupy the lower pair of arm sockets.

Question 1:  Is there a RULE that I'm missing somewhere, or does RAW create eight-limbed creatures?

Question 2:  Regardless of RAW, is there a consensus about this issue?

Edit:  Imperial Armor Update IV, p 78 "the Hive Mind has adopted a standard six-limbed template for all its creatures."

Thx all,

-Ferro

There is no rule as of yet that your misssing

Wings dont replace anything. The FW tyranid wings assume that wings replace legs when in fact, you don have to.

FW's wings just confuse the matter when it doesnt need to be.

Per the rules, you still get your two weapon symbiotes.

This creates a modeling challenge if you want to remain consistent with the Tyranid hexapedal anatomy. The easiest way to make a winged Tyrant and keep the weapon symbiotes is obviously to use the regular arms and then add wings onto the back, but that makes him octapedal.

As Hellfury noted, Forgeworld dealt with this issue by ditching the legs. Other modelers have taken other approaches, I believe, but it's definitely a challenge.

I'm using a Red Terror as the basis for a Flying Hive Tyrant. No legs - it's got a snake-like lower body like a Ravener. So there is room for 4 arms. I like the consistency of 6-legs across the board.

Just pinned some dragon wings on the sucker last night. Next is to mode the implant attack. I'll definitely post a pic in the modeling forum when it's painted...but at my speed, that'll be February

I used Blood Dragon Nightmare Wings. They look really good.

To steer this back into a rules discussion....

....here is your answer -> http://uk.games-workshop.com/tyranids/special-characters/1/

Old One Eye, The Red Terror, and the Death Leaper all still have rules. You just need to know where to look!

Enjoy!

Actually the FW wings are "Scything wings" and can count as a pair of Talons.

the spire of angels

i am building my  wife a  nid army that has lots of winged warriors and a winged tyrant.

i am using the standard plastic dragon wings on the tyrant and i am trying out the vampire bat wings from WHF for the warriors.

as a matterof modeling i am placing the wings on the back simply because it is easy to do.

Looking at the Red Terror stats...that what Lictors *should* be!

For 24 more points I'd take the loss of S and I, the increase in T and A and the *much* better save and movement...(the loss of I kind of hurts, and it does need Flesh Hooks...but that save...drool...)

It would be nice to be able to field three of these suckers as a single force org elite choice, that deepstrike simultaneously.
