If you use the ability to gate a unit to another place on the board, does the Priest have to in essence become a part of that unit, or can you declare  that he's not with the unit in case it get's assaulted on the turn it pops in?

He can take any unit for a ride, as long as the unit is within 6", whether or not he's actually part of the unit. So you can attach him to the unit and teleport, or you can leave him unattached and teleport both him and the unit anyway.

But because the teleporting presumably takes place in the shooting phase, you have to have decided whether or not to join him to the unit in the movement phase, before you can use the power. So no deciding whether or not to attach him after having teleported.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias
