Traditionally, calvary units have used the rectangular old "calvary" bases, but in 40k rectangular bases are kind of out of place... Is there any advantage to using the big round bases instead? I'm using flesh hounds, and need to buy some bases, so which ones should I buy? I'm kind of leading toward the old rectangular ones, but I have no preference... Thanks.

If you later decide to play WHFB, you'll be glad that you put your flesh hounds on rectangular bases. The same goes for all daemons: I put mine on the square bases that come with them and use them in both games.

As out of place as the are, for chaos hounds & similar cav models that are interchangeable with 40k/WHFB, I think using the supplied cavalry bases is best (as Flavius mentions above). That said, I agree with you, they are less pleasing aesthetically in 40k where everything else uses round basing.
A time consuming work around I've seen is taking a 25mm round base, cutting it in half and gluing the two half-circles to opposite sides of a 25mm square base (with, possibly, a plasticard shim base underneath), and using green stuff to conceal the joins. Doesn't look particularly bad, but sounds like a pain in the ass.

But dont bikes come with calvary bases( never bought a bike yet always ebayed them or traded for them). I preferr te calvary base and square bases over the round ones for my deamons makes it easier too fit them under the pie plate.

Aslo, if you put them on the larger round bases, they will be harder to fit under the summoning template, if you have larger squads.

Why would you need a base under the hill where Christ was crucified?
Oh, you meant CAVALRY. Carry on then.

Okayyyyy....... Thanks for pointing out that I misspelled that, but I thought this was the tactics section, not grammar and spelling. Oh, you were trying to be funny. Carry on then.

Flavius, Nyarly, Gabe and Strangelooper gave you just about everything you needed to know. The misspelling?s just a pet peeve of mine. There have been a couple of related threads recently, on here and elsewhere, and I?ve about exhausted all my useful comments. http://www.dakkadakka.com/Forums/tabid/56/forumid/8/postid/127268/view/topic/Default.aspx http://www.dakkadakka.com/Forums/tabid/56/forumid/8/postid/127514/view/topic/Default.aspx http://warhammer.org. uk/PhP/viewtopic.php?t=23613 http://warhammer.org. uk/PhP/viewtopic.php?t=23618 http://p076.ezboard.com/fwarmongerboardfrm10.showMessage?topicID=3194.topic
