Chaos Chosen Terminators come outfitted with Combi-bolters and power weapons. They can then be upgraded to have Lightning Claws or Power Fists if you pay 5 points for each terminator that you upgrade.

In a Death Guard army, if I take 7 Terminators one of them gets upgraded for free to an Aspiring Champion. This gives him access to the Chaos Armoury.

My question is one of process should I wish my Chaos Aspiring Champion to have a Power Fist or Lightning Claw.

If I purchase it as an upgrade to the squad it costs 5 points. However if I buy it from the Armoury it costs 15 points. Which is correct? Does the squad upgrade cost apply and the armoury cost only apply to items that the AC can't access as part of the squad.

PLC, check page 21 of the Codex. The Chosen entry confuses things a bit by saying that Champions may not take *ranged* weapons from the "list opposite", but this does not in itself nullify the basic rule that Champions may not take squad weapon upgrades at all.

Thanks for that. So if I want to outfit all models in the unit with powerfists at 5 points then I need to forgo the "free" AC upgrade. This would cost 35 points against 45 for the AC champ+unit where there is one extra attack (the cost of Daemonic Mutation for an AC). Makes sense.
