Subject: 1500-point IG army list using chem-inhalers

This is my 1500-point IG army list using the following doctrines: Chem-inhalers Cameleoline Ratlings Ogryns Conscripts The theme is ice-world chem-dogs (ice-dogs?) with commissars keeping the assorted scum in line (chaos militia conversions). I've included ratlings but can't fit in the ogryns at the moment. Company HQ - JO 4 Flamers Frags Chem-inhalers Cameleoline (CIC) 89 Commissar Power Fist Frags 61 Chimera 2HB EA RTM 95 Sentinel Support (1) Heavy Flamer EA 45 Ratlings (6) Chem-inhalers 76 Platoon HQ - JO Surveyor ML 2GL CIC 93 Commissar 40 Infantry Squad (10) ML PG CIC 105 Infantry Squad (10) LC PG CIC 115 Conscript Platoon (40) 4 Flamers CIC 276 Commissar Power Sword Surveyor Meltabombs Trademark Item 62 Sentinel Squadron (2) 2Autocannons EAx2 110 Sentinel Squadron (1) LC EA 60 Hellhound EA Smoke RTM 128 Basilisk Indirect Fire Armoured Crew Compartment 145 (1500 total) I'm not a big fan of the Leman Russ model, so I'm reluctant to take any. This list will probably see more action on CoD boards, which will hopefully make it more effective. Any comments?<!-- / message -->

Hmmm, first impressions:
Drop the Cmd Chimera Drop the Commissar's PF Drop all the GLs (I know I love the minis too but GLs suck!) Trade out the MLs for ACs Make the Commissar w/ the Conscripts vanilla Drop the HF sentinel, maybe take a ML sentinel Take the armoured crew comp off the Basi (you don't want it to be fired on in the first place, if your enemy has an LOS on it, it's dead already) This should give you enough points to take a 5-Ogryn squad

A normal Commissar can not attach to a Conscript Platoon. See 'Advisors' on pg 40 of the codex. Frozen Warrior

A few suggestions:
1) You don't have many tanks, and what tanks you do have are lightly armored. All of the enemy's AT weapons will have only a few fragile targets, so your vehicles will die very quickly. I would either a) Drop most or all of the sentinels, the chimera and the Hellhound, or b) take a ton of sentinels and some more Chimeras/Hellhounds to force the enemy to spread his fire a little bit.
2) You're light on fire power, especially anti-tank firepower. If you choose option "a" I would add two or three infantry squads with lascannon. For 1500 points, 4 lascannon is really the minimum I would take in an army.
3) I would give the company HQ a Standard and a Medic. I find both of these options to be excellent. You might want to upgrade your JO to an HSO with a power fist and a few other items. The HSO and the Commissar, both with power fists, make a decent counter-assault unit, which is something your army lacks.

Thanks for the replies. I've changed things around a bit to try and improve things. Doctrines: Chem-inhalers Cameleoline (CIC) Sharpshooters Special Weapons Ratlings Company HQ - HSO Trademark Item Power Sword Mortar CIC 115 Special Weapons Squad - Demo Charge Sniper Rifle CIC 75 Special Weapons Squad - Demo Charge Sniper Rifle CIC 75 AT Squad - 3 LC CIC Sharpshooters 140 FS Squad - 3 AC CIC Sharpshooters 125 Mortar Squad - CIC 100 Platoon HQ - JO Honorifica Power Fist 4 Flamers Frags CIC 134 Infantry Squad - PG CIC 90 Infantry Squad - PG CIC 90 Platoon HQ - JO Power Sword 4 Flamers Frags CIC 94 Infantry Squad - PG CIC 90 Infantry Squad - MG CIC 90 Ratlings (3) CI 43 Sentinel Heavy Flamer EA 45 Sentinel Heavy Flamer EA 45 Basilisk IF ACC SL 148 I've dropped all the Commissars because I've added more leadership bubbles, which should boost the chem-inhalers pretty well. The infantry squads are able to move and fire without losing any shots, while the heavy weapons are more effective. Also there are less armour targets (the sentinels will be sneaky and the basilisk very sneaky) and I have a quite a few things that might be able to pin (not guaranteed, but adds an element of uncertainty!). Incidentally, since I dropped the commissars, but had the models, all the officers will look like commissars (Terrax Guard officers assigned to a scum battalion?!) as will the sentinel pilots. Creed is going to get a big hat!

Without having to change your list very much, you can easily apply these suggestions: I'd say get rid of the wargear from the HSO as well as the mortar team in his squad, get rid of the power fist on the PHQ JO in favour of a power sword, and replace Sharp Shooters with Close Order Drill. (just have the HI PHQ use it to boost the JO to LD10 I5, and/or the non-HI PHQ for LD9 and/or form up the infantry prior to being assaulted by I<5 troops. You don't have to use it.) I'd give the searchlight to one of the Sentinels in lieue of the Basilisk - as much as for fluff as effectiveness. (wouldn't the scout be using it to spot for the big gun?) You can do without a top on your Basilisk - with IF, it should mostly be out of LOS anyways, so unless you see it getting into a lot of artillery duels it is not a big deal. That's eighty points saved, enough to give each of your plasma gun squads a lascannon for more flexible ranged goodness. Remove a single flamer from a PHQ and you can afford a standard bearer.
If your list is pre-buy, you might want to reconsider too many small squads, as six-man squads pay more per figure than ten-man squads for special equipment. I personally hate using AT squads because they do not have enough ablative wounds for my taste. The special equipment makes them even more victory points should your opponent get off a few templates. I think basic infantry - lasplas CIC - would serve you far better than the three six-man support squads. This would also give you the points for Veteran Sergeants for units at the ends of your line, so they could form up for LD9 with COD. On non CoD boards, it could be worthwhile to have Jungle Fighters over Chameleoline.
