Not only legal, but a very popular choice.

At 5 points each, they are the cheapest fast wounds you can get in a tyranid army (rippers are cheaper per wound, but they don't fleet).

I prefer to field spinegaunts 'without number' and really make things frustrating. But you'll have to find a codex to get the rules on that
