I have a 1200 point Imperial Guard list that I constructed here on Dakka, thanks to the immensely helpful HBMC and wight_widow, who helped me out along the way. Since then, I have developed a feel for the Guard, in some ways more than others. Right now, I'm torn between two configurations, both of which seem fairly effective to me. The current list is reproduced below, while the modifications I'm interested in making are after that.

Vetarin Grenadiers - Imperial Guard 1200 pts

HQ - 175 pts

JO w/ Iron Discipline - 65 pts
Staff w/ ML

Anti-Tank Squad w/ 3 Lascannons - 110 pts

Elites - 225 pts

Storm Trooper Squad (5) w/ 2 Meltaguns, Deep Strike - 75 pts

Storm Trooper Squad (5) w/ 2 Meltaguns, Deep Strike - 75 pts

Hardened Veteran Squad (5) w/ 3 Meltaguns (Drop Troops) - 75 pts

Troops

Storm Trooper Squad (8) w/ 2 Plasma Guns - 100 pts

Storm Trooper Squad (8) w/ 2 Plasma Guns - 100 pts

JO w/ Iron Discipline - 65 pts
Staff w/ ML

Squad Alpha w/ Autocannon, Plasma Gun, Veteran Sergeant - 91 pts

Squad Beta w/ Autocannon, Plasma Gun, Veteran Sergeant - 91 pts

Squad Delta w/ Autocannon, Plasma Gun, Veteran Sergeant - 91 pts

Fast Attack

Sentinel w/ Multilaser - 45 pts

Sentinel w/ Multilaser - 45 pts

Heavy Support - 165 pts

Leman Russ w/ HM Lascannon, HB Sponsons - 165 pts

So far, the list works great, and has no trouble killing armor. However, I have had some trouble with heavy infantry, and am interested in possibly doing the following conversions:

Making the Anti-Tank Squad all Missile Launcher (frees up 15 pts)
Taking a Lascannon in place of the ML for the CHQ Staff (takes 5 more pts)
Exchanging the ML in the PHQ for two Plasma Guns (no net change in cost). They'd be Droop Troops if I did this, meaning I could ditch the Iron Discipline too (frees up 5 pts)
Possibly ditching 3 Storm Troopers from each Troops squad (frees up 60 pts) to let me field a 6-man Rough Rider Squadron (Vet. Sgt. w/ BP & Hunting Lance; 5 RR' s w/ 2 Flamers, 3 Hunting Lances - 79 pts cost)

79 - 60 - 15 + 5 - 5 = 4pts more than what I had before. Since the total cost of the above (unchanged) list is 1193 pts, that would bring me to 1197 points.

So, is it worth it?

I love rough riders and drop vets, so I'm biased and I say give it a go. At 1200 points I don't think you are losing much total power by exchanging 3 Las & 1 ML for 3ML & 1 Las. However, considering the number of small sized one hit suicide squads (almost a third of the army), I can see why making those Grenadier squads even smaller would make me nervous if it was my army.

I can't imagine that HBMC would aprove of heavy weapons in your command squads. Also, there seems to be a lack of high rof weapons, notably the heavy bolter.

Aside from that, it looks good.

Cheers

Also: running around with a single russ is generally a bad idea.

@Bolter: That was my major concern - that I would have too many one hit units and not enough staying power to last in a firefight. I've done fairly well considering that I've had to deal with Land Raiders dumping Termies right into my gunline and DE Incubi being flown in from behind cover, not to mention the hideous AP5 firepower my brother's Tau list can throw out at this point level.

@Ether: One of my initial concerns with this list was that I wouldn't have enough shots with my heavy weapons to guarantee damaging an enemy opponent. However, the line Autocannons work very well at this point level, although I hav also considered using a 3-HB Support Team instead of the triple Las/or triple ML Anti-Tank Team to give me some horde killing power. I've never tried Heavies in the CHQ or PHQ, save for an experiment with mortars (didn't go very well, which is why I'm trying some direct fire weapons), but I think that at 65 points, I'm not really losing a lot if my CHQ gets blown away - I'll be forcing priority checks constantly, and they'll be in some light cover.

I also realize that a lone Russ is not wise, which is why I play it pretty conservatively on the field, as it makes up my best horde/MEQ killing unit. I gave it a pair of HBs for this reason, in hopes to make it more effective should it be damaged , immobilized, or what have you.

I still can't decide whether or not to go 3ML or not. However, compared to deciding whether or not to go 2-Plas over 1 ML in the PHQ, it is a mere trifle.

I'd say flip-flop the infantry and support squad heavy weapons - or dink the support squad and the command missile launchers for Russ #2. The former option might mean slashing some Veteran Sergeants. Personally, I am not a fan of AT squads at all, regardless of armanent. I think the latter option is best, taking into account where you claim to have difficulties - AP3 templates are some good vs. MEQs. If you can't scrounge up a Russ, some cheap Special Weapons Squads give you some semblance of the destructive power - if not the staying power - of a Russ for 90 points even. Also - what's up with not having Company colours?

When soldiers think, it's called routing.

@Wight: I'm not sure why I didn't include a flag - In hindsight, it doesn't make much of a difference (JO had Ld8, and Iron Discipline allows him to regroup the units that fall back around him. I might be able pick up a Russ, making the list look like this:

HQ - 45 pts

JO w/ I.D.
Staff w/ nada

ELITES - 225 pts

ST Squad (5) w/ 2 Melta, Deep Strike
ST Squad (5) w/ 2 Melta, Deep Strike
H-Vets (5) w/ 3 Melta

TROOPS - 533 pts

ST Squad (8) w/ 2 Plasma
ST Squad (8) w/ 2 Plasma
JO w/ laspistol + chainsword
Staff w/ 2 Plasma

Squad w/ Autocannon, Plasma, Sarge
Squad w/ Autocannon, Plasma, Sarge
Squad w/ Autocannon, Plasma, Sarge

FAST ATTACK - 90 pts

Sentinel w/ Multilaser
Sentinel w/ Multilaser

HEAVY SUPPORT - 310 pts

Russ w/ Triple HB
Russ w/ Triple HB

1203 points
71 Guardsmen
2 Tanks, 2 Walkers

Not bad at all. I feel dumb now, since I bought a Lascannon team that will serve no purpose until I expand the army (2+ years away).

Thanks though, Wight_Widow. This list is much more effective now.

Oh, and bold faced units deep strike.
