How important is it to use official PP models for warmachine? I am curious as Ii would like to do a Pirate merc force for the game, but really dont want to wait for the models to become available. I was thinking about using the far more poseable GW empire Militia for the pirates, as many of the parts could be suitable for such. Among them being hand weapons and pistols. I am sure I would not be able to use them in official tourneys, but I doubt I will ever participate in such. Even then, could they be legal? Any thoughts?

Wouldn't they be a tad short? WM being vaguely 30mm vs. GeeDub's vaguely 28mm ...
Also, I commend you for wanting - though out of necessity in this case - to use GW stuff in WM, not something I've seen before. I've started amassing an 'Eldar' army using PP models, but going the other way ...
Interested in where this goes, whether you go militia or no.

PP tends to be even more rigorous than GW in restricting proxies. Example: up until recently, you couldn't use an IKRPG figure to represent a Warmachine figure (the IK mage hunter for Eyriss, for example). Now, conversions and PP proxies are allowed, within limits, much like GW, but often tournament organizers prefer that you have the official fig.
Having said that, you'll find lots of proxy examples on the PP modeling forums, especially for 'friendly' play, including leagues. Since a lot of people have come to Warmachine after playing other games, including GW, there's been a lot of creative energy spent on converting existing figs to Warmachine. Everything from Rhulic (dwarf) armies using a whole cavalcade of figures, to alternatives from reaper and even 'that other company' (aka GW). Best examples I can think of are the female flute bard from Reaper's Dark Heaven Line as a Piper of Ord, Warhammer Kislevites as Khador infantry, and a Werner Kloke female vaguely russian hunter figure as an alt-manhunter, but there are others. There's even a thread there somewhere suggesting all kinds ofalt figs, including GW.

I am not really worried about scale. Thats the least of my worries really. Ok, so no GW figs in official games. No sweat, as I expected that. I really want to use these figs for something as they have been sitting in their box for a couple years now. Perfect opportunity to make some poseable plastic pirate figs for war machine (comes with enough pistols to make 10 pirates. 2 per sprue a lefty and a righty). Gimme some rules, the pirate warcaster and a war jack (heh I already have an empire cannon...for commodore) and I am ready to play when the rules come out. Besides, I think GW will actually be CHEAPER than PP for these figs, as they come 20 to a box for $35. I am also lame for plastic. I want to have its petroleum byproduct babies. Yes, I think this will work out quite nicely. With WM Prime Remix just released, and a set of rules for models I like, it looks like I got into WM at the right time.

GW is often cheaper, especially for things like units. A box of Kislev infantry was a couple of bucks cheaper than the Khador box, all told. Interestingly, a lot of WM players kind of eschew plastic bits and figs, preferring metal as their medium. Doesn't mean plastic empire or brettonian figs don't show up, just seems to be a preference. Be sure to look at the other merc options. Currently, depending on Cap'n Jack's rules, I'm thinking about adding Sam Horne and the Devil Dogs (buxom lass with hand cannon and her friends), a Vanguard (big fancy 'jack), an Ogrun Bokur (big ogre bodyguard), and some other nasties. Especially Sam, because really, a poy-rate cap-tin needs a wench!

Also, they sell the bases individually, so if people are friendly you'd want your conversions on the proper base size. (If you pick up Primer: Remix you'll notice that each unit has a base designation)

Yeah, I have been rebasing my models in the superior DarkAges/Warmachine bases recently. Gotta love that, even though the bases are somewhat expensive. Glad to hear remix made base designations, if for nothing else than to make referencing whats on the table easier by seeing the bases. One more question, what dice type does warmachine use? D6? D10? a mixture? help please. I am making an order and need to know if I need to buy any more dice of differing types.

Everything is based on 2d6.
Roll to-hit: 2d6+ attack
Compare your total to the target's defense.
So a Defense 10 is easy to hit. A defense 17 is not.
Deal damage? ; 2d6 + Strength
Subtract the target's armor from your total.
Everything after that is about boosting. Spend focus to boost to-hit or damage. Roll an additional d6 to improve your chances, etc.

Yuppers. The most dice I've ever needed to roll at once is 4d6. Only one or two units in the game (the Butcher is the only one I can think of) can use more.
Warmachine is definitely strict about proper base sizes. It's a key part of the mechanics of the game.

Oh, thats just lovely. No more arseholes rolling their bucket o' dice across tha table and mutilating my models because they just think its sooooo snazzy to have more dice on the table than anything else. Awesome. Dont need many models, dice or books to play. I am liking this more and more as time goes on. I cant wait for the day when I show up at a game shop not lugging three footlockers just to play a single game. Ahh and Prime remix is on its way to my loving arms as we speak. There will be sweet sweet love in my office tonight. It looks like I will be meeting up with you soon to have you kick my ass in WM, Malfred.

I've used a couple proxies in my army. I don't see it often, mostly on merc units. Not too many conversions, either, which is one thing that GW has over WM. I too will be adding the pirate faction to my repertoire when they are released. If you're interested in more piratey models, check out Foundry Miniatures piratical line I'll probably be scattering some of these guys depending on how many pirate models Privateer releases. Oh, and welcome to the game. It's been almost 2 years since I've switched, and I haven't looked back.

The foundry pirates are, btw, some really great figs. My buddy Pete, in his effort to create the perfect Pirates vs. Vikings vs. savage natives (vs monkeys vs. robots vs. dinosaurs vs. ninjas...) picked up a bunch. They look, feel and paint up great.

Are they on metal bases or do they have tabs, by the way? I'm considering plank-board bases.

The foundry pirates are on metal bases. I attach them to GW round bases and texture over the foundry base. Word of warning, foundry is truely 25-28mm and are drawfed by Warmachine figures. A better supplement would be to raid Reaper's Warlord mercenary line. http://www.reapermini.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=4471&cat=84&page=3 http://www.reapermini.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=4472&cat=84&page=3 Reaper also has several pirates in their Dark Heaven's line.

The biggest problem I can see with the Proxies, is that PP will most likely release the the Figures months before the new book comes out. So the only way to get the rules will be to buy the figures, unless you want to wait longer. Additionly, the rules cards that come with the figures are far more useful then flipping thought a rule book mid game.
