Just saw this question on Librarium Online, and it's a good one.

Is Sweeping Advance optional?

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. Just curious: Why is this a good one?

Looking at the rules on page 43 it seems 100% clear that a sweeping advance is not optional (unless I'm missing something obvious).

The rule reads:

"When a unit falls back from combat, the victors make a Sweeping Advance, attempting to cut down the falling back enemies, and can then make a Consolidate move. Some troops, such as Space Marine Terminators, are not allowed to sweeping advance -- in such cases the unit just consolidates."

So what am I missing? Why would anyone think a Sweeping Advance is optional?

Probably just because it used to be optional...

Under the current rules though, why would you want to not Sweeping Advance anyway...?

You would not sweeping advance if you wanted to grant a small shred of mercy to the foes of the emperor.

Because if marines are breaking in thier assault phase, if you sweeping advance and catch them, they auto-rally and then can't be shot in your shooting phase.

AND you wouldn't be able to herd them off the board, like the good little emporer's sheep they are . LOL I thought it was a good one because I'd never even thought about it, I just swept whenever possible. AND it was about 5:30 in the morning :S

Yup. The wording is very clear. The winners sweep. There is no choice involved. And yes, when facing Space Marines, it would often be better not to do so.
