Here's a project I've been working on lately - a winged Hive Tyrant /w dual twin-linked devourers.

What do y'all think?

That rocks. Are you teaming up with Yak or something for a Nidzilla fest? Hmmm? You both have been put under the thrall of the hivemind...

I'll tell you what I think. I think it is fantastic. The color scheme is, for lack of a better word, perfect. I also love the way you did the bone areas. Is there an army to go along with this one that we can see?

Why would you think that?

Thanks. I've not done models that I wanted to base on desert before, so when I started this project, I wanted to go with a color scheme that looked, well, deserty. (Is that a word?). Plus I wanted it to look organic, so brown and green were the natural choices.

It was originally a lot more brown, but I needed something to add some visual action to the model, so I decided to make all the skintones green, while adding some bone-like coloring to the armored plating. The rest of the colors were pretty much dictated by the need to stand out from the base colors of brown and green.

It actually painted up ridiculously quickly...I used some concepts I'd discussed with Augustus when we hung out at AdeptiCon last year (and for which he's teaching a seminar at AdeptiCon this year) and I think it turned out nicely. It's definitely changed the way I've painted armies. I think it actually took less time for me to paint the model than it did for me to do the assembly...which is fine by me, because I've always enjoyed converting more than I have painting.

One sad story with this model...originally, I had sculpted a forked tongue on for the head using putty (to rep. enhanced senses). Unfortunately, after basecoating the model I accidentally knocked over the platform it was drying on, and although not too much reassembly was required (mainly re-installing one of the devourer arms) once I'd sprayed another touch-up basecoat, I realized that the forked tongue had broken off. I thought about resculpting one, but didn't want to - A: have to wait another 24 hrs for the putty to dry and B: have it happen again, so I just rounded off the end and painted it as it was.

But overall, I like it.

*sigh* space wolf players.....

let's put dead models on the base, that always improves everything......
NOT!

that's one heck of a model centurion, love the colours.
the base does indeed look a bit boring, maybe a few rocks here and there, and I would use a darker brown on the edge.

just one more thing. why double Devourers? isn't that a rather dumb choice for a S6 or 7 modell?

Yeah, I was going to try and put some deserty terrain on the base. Unfortunately, do you have any idea how impossible it is to find someone who makes cacti or anything like that? I'll have to figure something out.

You're in luck! Check out Conquest Miniatures terrain, they sell two inexpensive kits with lots and lots of cacti, just the sort of thing for your Wild West Nids of the Apocalypse.

It's a really great model, but be careful with your lights and darks. That brown/black undercoat and the green are very different, and because that green has little transparency, it looks like two colors as opposed to light and dark areas. Next time try mixing up a matching range of light-to-dark greens to use. Try reading some books on color theory for painters, if you can bring your skill with color up to your ability to paint detail you'll be able to produce killer work.

It's supposed to look like two colors. I originally did it pretty much all in shades of brown, with green where all the red details are (which is how I did all the little bugs that go with him). Even with the bone-ish plating, the model was still too bland. What looked good on a little bug just didn't work for the big bug. So I decided to make green the models secondary color, and repainted the limbs and tail with various shades of green. I ended up liking the effect, even if it did make it a bit less desert-y and a bit more forest-y.

Got any suggestions for books? Always looking to learn.

Try The Elements of Color by Johannes Itten and Interaction of Color by Josef Albers; they're the two classic books in the field of color theory that most contemporary work comes from. You might also try just flipping through a pile of books about watercolor and oil painting techniques at the library and seeing what's good, they usually have good information about color theory. Unfortunately my best piece on the subject is a photocopy from a book that's long out of print

Also, have you thought about painting gloss coat over the skin to make it shinier than all the bone? Maybe it's just the lighting, but in the photos it looks like matte varnish all around.

That's because they are. I'm not that fond of gloss varnish.
