Does the Familiar, even though wargear, count as a model and make the IC a unit?  If so, how does this effect targeting?

These questions are absolutely unasnwerable with the shoddy rules for a familiar given in the Space Marine codex.

The familiar is a seperate model (as dictated by the fact that it has a statline and because the SM FAQ says so), and as such the two must act as a unit together; there simply is no other way to play them.

As to whether this unit is no longer protected by the IC's targeting restrictions is just unknown. My personal feeling is that a Librarian/Familiar unit is a different unit than just an IC and therefore their unit should not benefit from the IC targeting restriction.

Ultimately, its one of those things you just need to tell your oponent before the game and see how they think it should be played. Or just don't take a Familiar.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?

yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

I would agree, however I would also add that once the familiar is dead you would then regain IC benefits. Of course, he still loses the Familiar benefits.
