BellOfLostSouls has a good blog about scratch building an Ork battlefortress.

http://belloflostsouls.blogspot.com/

At least, I thought it was good, but I am a bit biased

I've built the zzap guns (but not attached them) but I'm stuck at the cab.

Which design looks better?  Also, should it be a bit taller?

First, big fan of the blog, and really enjoyed the Dark Angels army breakdown. You showed me much more about the codex and what it can do then I had gathered from online or talking to other gamers. Also, just saw a new tactica to read!

On the wagon, I suppose #1 is better. Good to see things are coming together, but the whole thing almost looks too tall to me. This may all change when completed and painted, but I'm definitely voting for no taller at this stage!

I agree on it looking too tall.  Hopefully the roller/krusher in the front  will help lengthen its appearance.
As for the "Should it be taller?" comment, I was refering to the cab, not the whole vehicle

EDIT: I did another mockup with a shorter height.  I left the area in the front taller to put the boys shooting the twin rokkets.

dude you are my hero for making those alpha legon decals (now to find some decal paper)

on the BattleFortres do not go taller it already looks like a skyscraper on treds. the cab needs to be bigger my sugestion is buy a pick-up modle take the cab and glue it to the front makes it look like it was looted from a impereal contryside farm

I had a busy weekend. I added on the cab, roller and engine and did some cleanup work on the top.
As usual, more details at http://belloflostsouls.blogspot.com

It's getting really big. Here is a pic next to a rhino.

Yeah, there will be orks manning rokkit launchers up in the observation deck.

I've thought about using the old trukk driver/gunner models in the zzap gun turrets, but I just can't get a feel for how it would look and still be closed topped.  The turrets are removable, so I may come back and do that later if an idea comes to me.

The modeling phase is just about complete. I did the primer coat last week and have started on the painting. The cab area still looks a little too clean. I think I'll add another row of rivets and some glyphs on the side. I'll also add some glyphs on the outsides of the observation deck as well.
I'm really worried about painting it. It looks so good now that I'm worried I'll ruin it with a bad paint job.
As always, there is a more indepth review at http://belloflostsouls.blogspot.com/

I was pretty impressed until I saw it next to a rhino. Then I just about fell out of my chair laughing. Laughing with delight, that is! That thing is awsome!

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Looks awesome primed. I curious as to what you used for the tracks and the roller arms.

Good luck with the painting.

. I curious as to what you used for the tracks and the roller arms.

The tracks are a product called "Caterpiller Spacers"  I found them at Home Depot.  Apparently they are used by electricians when installing electrical outlets.  They come in 4 inch sections and you can get a bag of 20 for just a few dollars.  They are not made of model quality plastic, so you will need to clearn them well before glueing and painting.

The rollers arms were a donation.  A guy was cleanin out his garage and found a model kit for a robot dinosaur.  He knows I like to kitbash so he gave them to me.  I don't recall the kit name.

I'm not a big fan of those small turret guns... I would consider switching them to shootas/slugas or even choppas ( Ork-style violence )

Other than this:

I really like it! Really Orkish! Will you be painting it?

Ah.. I had one of those. They are fun to have, but I never got to use mine.

Yours looks better that mine anyway, good job so far.

I think this is an awesome conversion.

That said though, I do not think it is very orkish.  The bolt patterns and organization of all the parts are too neat and orderly for an ork vehicle.  It seems like the orks would have drove this right off an automotive assembly line.

That thing looks fantastic primed! wow, what a difference. I agree though, it could use some more rivets and glyphs, but on the whole, that is a truly immpresive scratch build.
