I was playing a game yesterday against Orcs. I hit his command squad, which was all mega-armored except for one guy, with an assault cannon. I got 2 sixes. He took out the one guy without the mega-armor stating that since rending ignores armor saves, they are removed as a casualty before you come to the stage that says you have to apply the wounds to the armor save that is in the majority. Sounded like a bunch of horse crap to me, and I won the game anyway so it ultimatly didnt matter, but is that legit or was it being played wrong?

I believe he was correct as when AP is equal to or lower than the armor save it does not matter.

I would say no, because although he does not get to make the save, his mega-armored Orks are in the majority, and therefore wounds must be pulled from them first. However, there is that stupid language (on page 37 I think?) that says models that don't get a save get pulled first. (the rule that wrecks Tau, if used as it is written, and is otherwise contradictory to the majority armor rules.... grrr...)
In other words, I would ignore page 37 (?) and use the majority armor save rules, and under those, he has to pull from the majority armor save - even though he doesn't get to save because of the low AP (the rending does not remove their armor, it just ignores it)
and Green bloater, it certainly does matter in that situation.

The majority rule ONLY applies when models get their armor save.

The majority rule ONLY applies when models get their armor save. - Greenie That is absolutely 100% untrue. Page 76 states that: "It's sometimes possible for some units to have models with different Armour Saves, and in these cases the normal casualty removal and Armour Save rules are modified slightly." In other words, if the unit has different Armour Save types then the mixed armor rules are used. And the mixed armor rules always tell you how to allocate and resolve wounds. Whether those wounds end up ignoring armor saves or not is irrelevant. That said, within the mixed armor rules, the owning player is allowed to allocate a particular wound wherever he likes provided there are enough wounds suffered to get him past the majority armor type. So in the example given at the top of the post, if the unit was 10 men strong (with only one model not in Mega armor), then the player was perfectly valid in removing that one model provided the unit suffered 10 or more wounds. If the unit in the example suffered 9 or less wounds, then the rending wound would have to be allocated on the majority armor type (the mega armor's 2+ save).

I am not going to argue it but I will simply close on this one by saying you are reading into the rules what is not there.

Posted By Green Bloater on 02/22/2007 2:37 PM I am not going to argue it but I will simply close on this one by saying you are reading into the rules what is not there. - Greenie I appreciate that you think I am reading into the rules stuff that isn't there, however I believe that if you look at the final example in the mixed armor rules, you'll see definitive evidence that you are incorrect in your presumptions: "The Black Templars squad noted above suffers four power weapon hits and four normal hits in a single Initiative step. The six Initiates with a 3+ Save are in the majority so they must make saves first. The owning player decides to take the four normal weapon hits and the two power weapon hits on them. The two remaining power weapon attack are allocated to Neophytes." Now, power weapon hits ignore normal Armor saves, so clearly that isn't a criteria to ignore using the mixed armor. In that example, there were more hits than there were models in the majority armor type so the owning player was able to split the wounds as he saw fit. If there had been less wounds than models in the majority armor type then the owning player would have had to take all the saves & casualties on the majority armor type.

That is an excellent example to support your case. I will re-evalauate. - Greenie
