I finished off this squad a week or so ago and wanted some comments. The bases are bland, and I'd love to hear good methods to make desert bases look interesting. One guy over at B&C suggested adding skulls... and plants... I also posted this squad on cmon and I'm getting hit a bit harder than expected in scores. I suppose it may be because it isn't the best picture, but no one has said anything to that effect yet. Anyway, let me hear your opinions.

Edit: Now that I think about it I should have left the 'glow' off of the plasma pistol because I sort of added it in as an after-thought and I think it looks bad.

Edit2: I brightened it up a bit. Let me know if it's better.

Mi.

Thats what c/mon is for man. They hit you hard to make you a better painter.
Looks good to me but i can only make out the lighter colors.

The only easy day was yesterday.

On the bases: Try adding slightly bigger rocks and painting them grey, not many environments have the ground in exatcky the same colour. Also add some static grass that can be altered by painting.

Skulls and weapons etc. should be a last restort, and can so easily be overdone.

With the galaxy as large as it is the odds of the average guardsmen seeing and fighting a marine or MEQ are relatively slim. Unfortunately the guardsmen in your (and anyone else who plays IG's) army are the REALLY, REALLY LUCKY ones that fight marines ALL the time...

There are two sizes of rocks, I guess you just can't see them well enough because they are painted uniformly. In the future I guess I'll go over the larger rocks with a few more layers of shade and highlight colors and see how that works out. As for static grass, I suppose brown and dried grass' might fit in. Green would look out of place I think.

Thanks for the comments thus far.

Could try a bit of dark ink wash for the bases, makes the gravel stand out a little more.

Those are really nice - that is a good color scheme and it is executed very cleanly. For the bases, to get a good desert look, I might advise using very, very fine sand with a few larger rocks painted a different color. Also, using colors such as reds and browns rather than the usual sandy yellow is often good.
