Hey hey

I'm working up a new chapter as a sort of pet project, I will hopefully be able to post some fluff soon, but for now I'm still nailing down a nice paint scheme. I'm currently focusing on a Space-Wolves gene-seed with Imperial Fists/Ordo Xenos training (slightly relaxed from standard Codex, but not full blown Wolves). The temporary name is the Jackal/Jackals chapter. I'm planning on basing their colour scheme off of the Maganac/Maguanac Corps from Gundam Wing W, using a black prime coat, Kommando Khaki and Scorched Brown (or Bestial Brown). They are a desert/savaanah world based, and I'd like to keep with the theme but still have a really cool looking scheme.

Here is the marine I have using the painter on GW's site:

And here is an example of the Maguanac Corps scheme:

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to improve this scheme, what sort of techniques to use to keep a really clean style (every armour plate visually separated, not Nurgle-esque mess, more Tau)?

Interesting idea and colour scheme. Not particularly original though (see here http://www.dropship.org.uk/projects/40k019.asp). That's the problem with Space Marines more than any other army. Anything you think of has already been done.

Still, good luck with it and don't let that stop you.

I wouldn't change the colour scheme in any way. It looks perfect for a desert force. Camouflage-y but not at the same time. Maybe add some variations for squad/sergeant designation? I'd suggest gold helmets for Veteran Sergeants but that's just me and my fascination with Egyptology.

As for keeping a clean style, start with black-lining, which is easier to do over a black undercoat, which might suit your colour scheme - on the other hand it might be hard to paint that Kommando Khaki over black. When I painted a bone-coloured Eldar, I started over black undercoat and found the best way was: one coat of Bestial Brown; two or three thin coats of Graveyard Earth (leaving BB in the recesses); one or two coats of Kommando Khaki; one or two coats of Bleached Bone; then Skull White for highlights. Obviously, you could follow that up to the Kommando Khaki stage. Add Bleached Bone to the Kommando Khaki for highlights.

Be careful with Scorched Brown. It comes out a lot darker than it looks on the interactive painter. It's almost black.

In addition to black-lining, don't drybrush and only wash if you're really talented. Just use extreme layering and you'll get that 'pop'.

Nice to see ice blue lenses rather than the usual boring red or green, btw.

DAMN! *glares at the guy who totally thought of the chapter first... even though it's only similar not identical*

To be fair his army looks to be more Desert yellow than Kommando Khaki... but I hadn't settled on a name for sure yet anyways *grumbles*

Thanks for the advice. I've never really used layering (not well enough anyways, not good at regulating paint consistency, I actually use to not even bother figuring out what that was!) I'm more of a drybrush/ink guy haha! Thanks again for the advice, I will hopefully give it a shot soon (gotta save up my schekels for these boys).

And yeah, I'm tired of the red/green lenses too, wanted to try something different.

That land speeder conversion is simply inspired.  It'd look good even in a non-desert themed army.

Yeah I spotted that conversion, I always knew there was something weird about those front plate-things on a landspeeder, that guy really nailed a good idea!

Also, my army would also be using:

Dunno if you can see, but it's wolves howling at full moons (right hand one goes on left shoulderpad). These are blown-up versions of a transfer from the Space Wolves Decals Sheet. Thinking of changing the name of my marines to "Howling Jackals" or something...

Now, that's a good idea. Takes the 'jackal' theme and twists it, so it's no longer similar in any way to the Sand Jackals. And the 'howling' reference immediately brings to mind the Howling Griffins, so there's a GW connection there for most gamers, which is a good thing.

The Dropship Sand Jackals are heavily steeped in Egyptology themes and 'rolling sand dunes' desert based. You could steer away from the Egyptology easily enough (looks like that's your original idea anyway) and go for a more 'baked earth and sand' desert theme (more like Jackals true home anyway).

The transfer is clearly a wolf and not a jackal, but you can get away with it. If you feel up to it, I'd suggest using white paint to thin the neck, thin the upper jaw and shorten it slightly. And even howling, the ear needs to be a little more upright for a jackal.

Btw, there's a reference to extreme layering in the latest USWD, although they call it hard edge layering or something.

And finally, if you need an ego boost, I'll (reluctantly admit) that this idea and colour scheme appeals to me so much I might just have to steal it...  Maybe I'll do a successor chapter called the laughing hyenas...

Haha man thanks muchly! Damn Jamsessionein has got me feelin all Orky and green.... like REALLY ORKY! WAAGGH! CRUSH ALL HUMIE-*ahem* sorry uhhh don't know what came over me *wince*.

Also for names I was considering Coyotes or something, but I have yet to decide (it can wait a while).

Yeah go ahead and take the idea and run with it, I'm up here in the cold white north (well I'm in BC so slightly chilly, very wet north... not even, I'm in the bottom south-west of Canada >_< ) so there's little chance anyone around your area would be any the wiser heh. Oh yeah and I probably won't be getting the USWD cause, again, I'm in Canada (besides I'm starting to suspect my subscription is over....)

Cheers!

That's Carl's stuff that is, and the pictures do not do it justice. You should see the amount of FW that man has!

Anyway, the color being suggested here is different to the one Carl used and he can always tweak his background so it is slightly different, and also if memory serves me correctly he credits the land speeder to some-one else and I cannot be bothered to look at the site to see who.

I think it was him, Dave Stone (talented modeller and painter) and one other than built and painted a full size night lord that some of you may have seen.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

Love the scheme and the concept. Have you thought about Howling Jackals? For me two word chapter names have more appeal than single word names. Howling Jackals evokes a rather haunting desert image. I also have to agree with the comment about tweaking the decals a little to make the image more jackal-esque.

Duh, when I read through the first time I missed your comment about possibly changing to Howling Jackals.  Definitely go for it.

Yes, there are female marines and my Sunhawks will explain it to you.
