Subject: 1850 Ravenwing.. mostly for fun, but can it win a few games too?

I recently purchased 3 Ravenwing battleforces, and a box of bikes. I know the common tactic is a combined force of RW and DW, but I want to do pure Ravenwing for now. So here is my 1850 list.. right now I'm mainly building the army for fun, and for looks.. I'm not concerned with winning every single game, or taking it to a gladiator, but I don't want to get smacked around every game either HQ- Sammael on Jetbike 205 Troops- Ravenwing Attack Squadron + 3 Bikers + Attack Bike ( MM) + Landspeeder + 2 Meltaguns + Power Weapon 405 Ravenwing Attack Squadron +3 Bikers + Attack Bike ( MM) + Landspeeder + 2 Meltaguns + Power Weapon 405 Ravenwing Attack Squadron + 3 Bikers + Attack Bike ( MM) + Landspeeder + 2 Plasmaguns + Power fist + Apothecary + Standard Bearer 465 Ravenwing Attack Squadron + 2 Meltaguns 140 Fast Attack- Ravenwing Support Squadron ( HB) + Assault Cannon 100 Ravenwing Support Squadron ( HB) 65 Ravenwing Support Squadron ( HB) 65 1850 on the dot. With 17 scoring units that can all move 24" if needed, I think I can snag objectives pretty easily - lots of melta to deal with high toughness models or armor - lots of bolters, heavy bolters and several assault cannons to deal with higher model counts. Any thoughts or advice on how to use the army or different weapon configurations?

Great minds think alike. I normally play at the 2000 point level, but we have the same models.
I think it is a winning army but would I take it to a RTT, I don't know. Most Doublewing and Ravenwing armies are going to be very similar in composition. As time goes on most army builds will be like Necons and Mech Tau. One or two army lists will come out on top and the most effective build.

I wouldn't mind taking this army up to 2000 points at some point - what would you add to my current 1850 list to get there?

It will top out at 50/50 and only if you play against exclusively lunchbox lists.

At the very least do whatever you have to to get powerfists on all those guys.
I'd like to see 3 tanks in any decent ravenwing style list. I know it's not super fluffy but they're by far the best buys in the dex and I'd say necessary to give your speeders a fighting chance.

I have given up on "pure" lists. When I said we had the same models. I use the same core that you are using . The three large troop squads and Master of the Ravenwing in speeder. I then added 2 tanks to the list. One is the Pread with AutoC/ HB. The other is a Pred with Las/HB. For my fast attack I use 3 LST with HB/AC. The tanks add some much needed longrange firepower. With the new rules it is a shame to not add units that help cover weak points in our lists. I have a small Deathwng force that I am mixing in and I hope to win some games in the furture. My deathwing is 3 squads, 2 hqs and 3 dreads. Back on topic. As for winning better than 50/50 % ? I still plan on using the same tactics as before and prevent my enemy from fighting his battle. I make him fight mine by making him come after me. I won't go to CC if possible. I will shoot up units that chase me and if he sits and tries to shoot me that is what terrain is for. To hide behind. I want to last 6 rounds and do the mission. This is an army that does not fight toe -to- toe. It hits and fades away. I lure my enemy after me in to heavy fire power. As for Longshot, I only had 2 powerfist in the last edition now I am down to one. Powerweapons are fine and Meltabombs work too. BTW whats a lunchbox list?

A list that your gradeschool opponent unpacks from his lunchbox, e.g. his unpainted necrons or orks with their arms on backwards or similar.
Power weapons on WS4 guys are pure and utter crap. What do you do when a squad of Crisis Suits with a couple drones charges your bikes and beats them in hand to hand? Doh.

I agree with longshot... The enemy needs to kill 6 Toughness 5 bikes to get the powerfist model. so most times it will strike! The normal power weapon often fails to wound with toughness 4 models..
My ravenwing list has 3 predators. when I deploy them next to each other, I got a big level 3 wall to put my landspeeders behind them. when i get first turn I rush the predators towards the enemy, pop my smoke launchers, and put my landspeeders(and attackbikes) behind them. In turn 2 I release shooty hell and rush (when possible) the bikes towards the enemy. At this time the enemy has to choose a target. the turbo boosting bikes have a 3+ inv save and my 6 landspeeders are all individual units.
I think this is a great way to field a (sort of) ravenwing army.

I'd go two predators and a no-cover-whirlwind but that's just because I can't see not taking that pieplate. The whirlwind is great insurance against a Pathfinder heavy army or similar cover save abusers like Orks. But I agree with you shogun, that's probably one of the few ways to make it work. It's still sub-par but at least closer to adequate than the normal craptastic variations I see so far.

That assumes that I wouldn't break the ravenwing bikers into two combat squads, and just keep them as one large 6 biker squad. My initial gut instinct was to just get as many scoring units as possible, but losing 3 scoring units in favor of nearly hidden powerfists is a tempting deal... I would have to drop the assault cannon off the FA landspeeder to find the points, but doing so would also let me put a power weapon on the last vet, in the small meltagun biker squad.
So should I just keep the bikers in 6-man squads, each with a powerfist vet?
