Subject: Trade Federation.. Tau?

I've just picked up the chance to grab one of these Star Wars toys pretty cheap. My initial thought was to turn it into scenery of the "crashed spaceship" type (Hey, it's a ton cheaper then a GW model) but then having a look at it, it's lines really make me think "Tau", or at it's size "Tau Superheavy". So I'm now wondering what I should do with the thing. With a little tweaking, and maybe a GWUK bitz order for a Hammerhead's gun or the like, it could make a nice companion to my Armorcast Baneblade or Warhound (as in, pretty much just use it as giant scenery), but with the Mega-Battle Expansion coming out at the end of the year, it might work for that as well. On the other hand, the lines of the thing might be too recognisably Star Wars, so I'm in too minds and asking for opinions here. On one hand, once I start to smash it up into scenery, its too late to change my mind about using it as a VDR superheavy, on the other hand, I'm not willing to order expensive sprues from overseas if I'm just going to junk it into scenery. Thoughts?

From that angle it could be a highly decorative vacuum cleaner.
Cool stuff.

If you wanting to make it look more Tau and less Star Wars, I think the best option is taking a hammerhead and or Forgeworld Tau Tank kit, and bashing them together (figuratively).
If you just replace the guns with bitz-ordered ones (regular GW catalogue is cheaper than FW) it is gonna be painfully obvious that it's a) a toy and b) from star wars.
That being said, I think it's a great idea! It really does fit with what I've seen of Tau vehicles, and could either be like a heavier transport/gunship (eg/ Land Raider, actually that front bit makes it look like it could do that special fly in and dump troops out like a open-topped vehicle) or a super-heavy gunship (just add more weapons? Maybe some drones buzzing around it?)
The better the paint job, the more Tau it will look methinks. So, in short, use lots of Tau bits to convert the shape of the vehicle to something different but still cool, put on Tau-ey guns, and paint it real cool and you'll have a distinctive piece! WHEE!

I had the same idea for my army, (before I sold the stupide pacifists, that was) and I still like the idea. how about putting a Tau Gun Turret wit TWO (2) Tau BFGs (forgot the name).
besides that, I can't think of any other ideas right now...

Yeah, its a good idea isnt it? Youre not the first to think of it. Matt Robertson, a district attorney for Great Falls, Montana made a "tau'ed" up version of that vehicle about 5 years ago. He used VDR rules. About 4 or 6 burst cannons. Replaced the main armament with a hammerhead railgun. Made it able to deploy heavy gun drones. Smart missle launchers on the front. Neat vehicle and looks quite in line with the tau style.

I checked out Forgeworld's site, but most of their stuff seems to be "Devilfish + new turret". I may pick up a Hammerhead and do some work, but I don't want it to get too expensive, and ordering the sprues from GWUK (I'm in Australia) is not gonna be cheapo at 8UKP for just the HH gun sprue (almost half the cost of picking a HH up at FLGS retail here).
Hellfury - are there any images of Matt Robertson's version out there? I'd like to see it, and even the VDR rules for it if possible to give me ideas.
cheers,

IIRC that conversion took the U shaped bit off (that became another flier) and changed weapons.

Cool stuff. haha , love it. it does have a rather tau look with the lines . but to echo the posts of others , its still a quite recogniseable vehicle , its going to take a fair bit of work to make it less star wars kitbash and more nice looking mangabo.....i mean tau vehicle

you wouldn't happen to have a picture of it next to a tau vehicle for size comparison that might help?
