After realizing I don't really have 2000 pts of optimized Space Marines, I'm digging out the old IG to take to an RTT this weekend.  I have no clue what the missions are going to be like, but all infantry gunline SAFH never goes out of style, right?

This list has 169 models, 10 lascannons, 5 Missile Launchers, 3 autocannons, 7 heavy bolters, 12 Plasma guns, 9 meltas, and plenty of flamers.  There is a LD9 node, and five LD8 nodes.  There are three power weapons to provide a bit of counter charge punch.

 

Things that worry me:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->1)      <!--[endif]-->not a lot of mobility.  If the missions are objective heavy, I’m relying on a few dropping squads or infantry to grab objectives.  The flip side is that there’s not much available to IG that’s good for objectives

<!--[if !supportLists]-->2)      <!--[endif]-->Not a lot of countercharge.  Normally I run 2-3 rough rider squads, but I’m tempted to switch to the deep striking veteran melta squads.  The real question is if I should stick with what I know and love (rough riders) or switch to something new (melta squads).  Any advice?

ON a logistical note, I still need to paint the melta vets (though they're at least primed).  while I have Rough Rider squads painted and ready to go. 

If anybody has any advice or questions, feel free to give them.

9 of your Anti Tank (6 Las, 3 Autocannons) are in 6 man squads. Someone with 3 Land Speeder tornados will deprive you of most of your AT weaponry in one stroke. Spread some of those amongst squads or prepare to be out shot.

Iv'e really been flipped 180 degrees on heavy weapon squads.  There are two reasons: they are more affordable than you first think, and are more durable than you first think.

Here's how to think of it:

On a typical 6x4 RTT table there's not going to be a lot of terrain, generally only enough to stash 4-6 squads in even 5+ cover.  Why not make those squads smaller heavy weapon squads?  With a 5+ save, it takes 9 wounds to wipe one out.  With 4+ cover, it takes 12!  Even against T3, 9 wounds will take at least 15 shots, on average.  That's the same number as a 10 man squad left out in the open. 

As for affordability, an anti-tank squad with SS and 3 lascannons is only 120pts, which is only 25pts more than a 10 man line squad with las/plas.  Certianly you need the bodies from time to time, but in general 2 Anti-tank squad and a 3 AC fire support squad cost 345 pts, which is just over three las/plas squads.  In over half my games, the weapon squads are going to earn their money.

there's also the logistical concern of having too many models to move/deploy/etc.  I'd agree that I should be concerned about that much mobile firepower, but I think you're overestimating it's effect on my army, and not taking into account the ability I'll have in shooting down those speeders in return...
