Subject: 1500 Necron Lists (plus build plan)

I've come to realize that I hate playing my Orks, and I'm holding out till their new Codex comes out before I do anything with them for a while, which may well be "sell the army" if they stay as sucktacular as they are now in their new dex. In the interum I've decided that I'm going to collect Necrons come this Summer, and I've put together a "build plan" for them. I don't plan on doing tournaments with them (because Godzilla nids will probably laugh at them and then have indigestion). But I'd like to think they have a nice competitive flair to em. This is my ultimate 1500 Point "Goal" list: Lord - 200 Veil, Res Orb 8 Immortals - 224 10 Warriors - 180 10 Warriors - 180 4 Destroyers - 200 4 Destroyers - 200 5 Scarabs, DFields - 80 Monolith - 235 It's mobile, it's got a decent phase out, and it's got a LOT of shots, most importantly from multiple units, which means I can play the target priority game better. Now that's the "goal", but that's not what I'm going to start with... Starter List Lord - 200 Veil, Res Orb 12 Warriors - 216 12 Warriors - 216 10 Warriors - 180 3 Destroyers - 150 3 Destroyers - 150 9 Scarabs, DFields - 144 Monolith - 235 You'll notice this is based off of the purchase pattern of: 2 Battle Forces, Lord, Monolith Moving On Up List Lord - 200 Veil, Res Orb 14 Warriors - 252 14 Warriors - 252 4 Destroyers - 200 4 Destroyers - 200 10 Scarabs, DFields - 160 Monolith - 235 Also known as "Jimmy bought two more Destroyers!" - who will probably get magnetized to be heavy destroyer capable in the future. After this, I can experiment with a huge base of Warriors, destroyers, and scarabs. I will slowly start buying an Immortals till I get enough to field the list at the beginning of the post, where I can really start experimenting. Thoughts?

I'm getting a 2000 point necron army from trade but I'm not ready to shelf my orks yet hate to see anyone do it .... but in responce drop the Monolith and add more immortals in a 1500 list there is no real room for it.

Yeah, I'm going to side with the majority on this one, Immortals are too good to pass up, especially in a lower point game.

the immortals are good but frankly you can't go wrong with more necrons. Oh, and where is your counter assault element and don't say immortals.

For a starter army, it is great. You get decent required elements and is fairly quick.
I know having a majority of an army be plastic for ease of assembly is a good thing, but the monolith should be replaced with immortals ideally. There is nothing wrong with the monolith at 1500, but immortals will definatly serve you better.
One tip for scarabs, modelling wise.
Only use three scarabs per base as opposed to four. They go ALOT further that way.

I appreciate the comments (and the tip on Scarabs, thanks HF). I'm actually doing an army swap tonight with a friend of mine, using his Necrons vs. my Marines. I'll probably use the list with 8 Destroyers and more warriors since he's not a fan of Immortals and doesn't have any. Plus that's the list I'll likely be running for a while since my "buy plan" includes slowly buying Immortals over time - mainly to give me something to do and not just drop a straight $80 on Immortals. As far as counter charge, well the squad of 10 Scarabs is going to do that, since I don't want to buy Metal Flayed Ones and I think they're a Meh unit anyway - along with the idea of Wraiths. Scarabs can tar pit for about 2 turns or so, maybe more and they can put out a good amount of attacks. As far as replacing the Monolith with more Immortals, I'm surprized at the suggestion. The lith keeps me out of assaults in a safer way than the Veil allows. It's also...the lith. It's PURDY, I want one just because of the model mostly and since this is being built as a "for fun" army and not something to go tournamenting people with. Plus the 'lith seems to go nicely with the defensive/conservative style that I plan on taking with the army to start with. I also like mobility, which the Lith gives in a pinch. So while being 25 cheaper, it's also a heck of a lot prettier of a model. I'm looking forward to tonight since I haven't played a Wargame in a few weeks at this point since I've been on travel (and I'm about to go on travel again next week - expect more drunken posts ). I'll post up how things go in the bat rep forum. Oh quick update, he has Pariahs which I can proxy for Immortals, so I may try the first list out after all - I'm not sure though.

Here's the 2000 pt Necron list I use that does really well for me: Deciever Necron Lord with veil and orb 7 Immortals 7 Immortals 11 warriors 10 warriors 10 warriors 4 destroyers 4 destroyers 4 destroyers Leave out the heavy destroyers, since regular destroyers put out a high enough volume of fire to duplicate effects on vehicles and are great anti infantry in the bargain. I've only lost 2 games with this list in about 15 that I've run it and have never worried about phase out. I only use Monoliths rarely, since it's my thought that a lucky shot can rob you of 235 pts. With troops and nothing but, your opponent has to earn his vp's the hard way. As a side note, this army does really well against all type of armies.

Well, Voodoo as far as replacing the 'lith with immortals, its more of an attrition factor. But to be honest, it isnt a cut and dried easily made decision either way. To mirror what relapse said, immortals (or any infantry for that matter) make it difficult for the opponent to win. Whenever I bring a straight up necron infantry list, my opponents groan with despair because they know that phase out wont happen so the game wont be easily won. not that it is easy to take out a monolith, but most armies prefer to rely on the lucky single roll that will give them 235 vp's as opposed to making them sweat for the win. I know this is rudimentary and you already know this as an ork player, but infantry put the pressure on the opponent, and its worth repeating. But its not your build that is the concern, its the point spread. necrons in anything less than 1500 is like your opponent shooting fish in a barrel. Necrons do not perform very well at 1500 (which should be considered the minimum point spread for this army) and work much better near 2k. In 2k, you can easily fit in a monolith as well as immortals. 1500 you have hard strategic army selections to make. But then again, this is a fun side army for you, and monoliths are definatly fun for the necron player...

Well I just got done playing my game with Necrons. My friend (who owned the army) wanted to do 1750 and not 1500, so I ran the following: Lord - veil/orb 8 Immortals 14 Warriors 14 Warriors 4 Destroyers 4 Destroyers 10 Scarabs, Fields Lith Comes in under 1750 by a bit, but he insisted on trying his new Eldar (non mech). I know I said I was going to write a batrep about the game, but it's not really needed, all you need to see is his list and know that the game was played on a table with cityfight terrain (lots of bulidings with 4+ cover). Farseer, Doom, etc 6x 5 Pathfinders 9 Harlies, assortment of kisses, troupe leader, shadowseer 6 War Walkers, EML + Bright Lance 3 Vibro Cannons. As much as I hate Eldar, I felt bad...He ended up getting slaughtered, we rolled Gamma Seek & Destroy. Re- the List: You say that Necrons don't work so well at 1500 Points? I find that somewhat interesting, I figured that they did pretty well at that points level. Not quite so great as 1850, but still nice. Obviously the higher you go, the more things that are possible that enable "the broken" to hit the list. Also, I saw someone give me a tip for a Necron "Flying Circus" style army with taking no lith or immortals, a maxed out destroyer lord, 16 Destroyers, 5 Heavy destroyers (2, 2, & 1), and then the minimum 20 Warriors. Didn't look too bad a list from what I thought, and probably has the easiest time against Godzilla for a Necron list anyway. I dunno, I'm very close to pulling the trigger on doing the army order for everything sans the immortals. I really do like the army setup and I think they'll make a fine second army now that I've retired my Orks to Waaagh amongst themselves till their new codex comes out.

Spam is as spam does. 40K is all about the spam. Lots of destroyers are a good thing, if you can avoid indirect fire.
The price however, is a killer as much as multiple squads of immortals though.
