Hi Guys, Just watching Starship troopers at the moment. I am along time wargamer GW, Flames of war, and Warmachine. Loving the idea of Combined Arms with Air support etc.. For those of you playing Starship Troopers what do you think of the game? Mostly I play 40K but was thinking of getting the Starter set. Is the game still taking off or is it a bit of a one hit wonder? Are there any good forums (apart from Mongoose Publishing) or hobby pages? Grateful for any feedback! Many thanks, Fluffy

The starter box is a really good deal. The Mobile Infantry boxes included are $40, the Arachnids are at 4 boxes and an extra sprue, which would be $67 themselves, along with the rulebook which retails for $30. Do the math yourself

I'm a fan of SST. I doubt it'll be a one-hit wonder as Mongoose do tend to back their games for the long term and we are still at the very beginning of the model release schedule.
The models are a bit more fiddly than the standard 40k model which does take some getting used to for some people. Also standard 40k tactics will result in a lot of bloody massacres so be willing to change your playing style. Overall I happily recommend SST and as long as you can arrange for a couple buddies to also get involved then you should have a heap of fun.

I thought the boxed set was a reasonable deal but wasn't surhaving played 40 K if I'd enjoy the game as much? I like the idea of using aircraft and nukes The models look ok for the most part but I also recently started collecting Tyranids for 40K so I was looking to expand. I thought SST might be a nice change?

SST is awesome. I tried to get into 40k when 4th edition came out, but the rules really just seemed like a dumbed down version of WHFB. As soon as I heard about starship troopers on dakka I was an immediate convert . Now I do not have a lot of gaming experience as there are NO gaming stores and NO gamers in my area, and no matter how hard I try to convert my friends, I always end up with a Warrior Bug missing a leg or something (although those models are TOUGH, it usually takes a drop of 4-5 feet onto a wood floor for even a chance of breaking, unless its your friends doing the dropping, then somehow it turns into about 2 feet ). Anyway, the box set is a great deal. You get 20 of the lovely warrior bugs, they are BIG!! I have some sample pictures of scale but photobucket is supposedly down till 1:30 AM and I dont feel like staying up that late, I will post later . You also get 16 MI with all the special weapons you need (except sniper rifles, except those are easy to convert or there are plenty of pewter options available) and tons of templates for bug tunnels, aircraft, etc. The arachnids fit together easily with a little sanding of some pieces, and they almost fit together without glue! The MI are very fiddly to some, I found them a lot of fun though as they are great for converting your own custom minis. If you have any questions about assembly head over to the mongoosepublishing.com forums, there are plenty of people there who would be glad to lend you a hand with any problems. The rules are also a lot of fun, its a lot differrent than WH40k, I find the rules much better tactics wise and funwise, anything you would normally pull in a 40k game is NOT going to work here. Suddenly your leaders are more of a resource than a weapon, and having your sergeant lead the squad isn't the best idea when a pack of blister bugs could be lurking behind the nearest building. Lots of different army ideas, and Mongoose is constantly releasing new armies and whatnot, the Pathfinders were just released, and in the next couple months we are getting the official Arachnid army book, the Mobile Infantry Army book, and most exciting for me, the Klendathu book, which has the LAMI (the troopers from the movie) who are going to be released soon as well, 20 metal models for only $25!!! Support is also strong for the miniatures, there is always a couple release a month, once in a while it slows up from manufacturing problems (there was a huge fiasco with the LAMI that resulted in everything beign pushed back like 3 months, but thats all fixed up now. This is no one hit wonder, this is SST, and I am sure you will love it! Head over to the official forums as well, we always get the latest news straight from the source, and while various unofficial forums have been started, nothing can really beat the community at the official boards, nothing like the Eye of Terror (sorry for being so long winded :-| )

here is a comparison shot of a warrior bug and a gaunt (warrior bugs are the BASIC soldier for the arachnid forces in SST ) http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y233/Veon1/Starship%20Troopers/P1010046.jpg and here is a space marine, an MI in standing position, a Cadian IG, and a kneeling MI with modified flamethrower. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y233/Veon1/Starship%20Troopers/P1010045.jpg

Hi Guys, Veon thanks for the posts. I ended up buying SST the other night. I love the size of the bugs compared to the MI. I haven't had a chance to paint or build them yet but I will soon. I even managed to find a player that lives locally (awesomshotdude from mongoose forums). Can't wait to use the Triple Thud Grenade Launcher. Bug goo everywhere Here is Veon's links for the lazy http://i6.photobucket.com/alassholes/y233/Veon1/Starship%20Troopers/P1010046.jpg

Its amazing what a good game designer can do when he isn't constrainted by 20+ years of old fluff and required bad rule carryovers (Why, don't be silly Mr. Chambers, 40k simply MUST have an assault phase!!!1!!). Chambers did an amazing job on this game.

Hi Guys, I ended up with the starter set before Christmas & hooked up with awesomeshotdude from SST mongoose forums for a intro game. I got to play MI with 2 squads of 6 one with Javelin & flamer, the other with Javelin & tripple thud. My NCO was in an M8 suit. 1000 pts I went up against 10 Tiger bugs & 3 squads of 10 warrior bugs with 3 tunnel entrances incl one which was held in reserve. 1000 pts awesomeshotdude's terrain is every bit as good as it looks on the forum. I really enjoyed the game mechanics, the models & the game. awesomeshotdude is a great guy to game against for those who are interested. Needless to say it's my birthday this week & I'm going to pick up more SST maybe an Ape suit or 3

Hi bunkerboi, I'm over in Sherwood. Not to far from awesomeshotdude. His terrain is even better in person. http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12289&highlight=

Okay, I've bought the starter set too, but I had to order it from the internet, so it'll be a while. Keep posting stuff so that I can keep getting my SST fix without actually playing.

Glad to hear another new starter like me. The Starter Boxed Set is pretty good. If you want a good SST fix I find the SST Mongoose forums better than most: http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/forum.php

"If you want a good SST fix I find the SST Mongoose forums better than most:" Better than most...??? I would have to say the official SST forums are #1 . Anyone with any questions should head over there and you will almost be assured a prompt reply by someone, and if its a big problem we get a lot of official rulings from Matt Sprange himself

Squee! SST finally came today! I read the rules (love them!) and built the 16(!) MI cap troopers. Took me about four hours. I tell ya, these guys sure do make you appreciate how simple 40k models are. I coulda churned out 30 space marines in that time, but I really like the MI customization a lot more. You don't even need to convert to get a kneeling pose!

The MI are awesome, take some time but you can get real results with some work. Other simpler options are the Female MI and veteran MI which cost 5 bucks more but you get 8 Pewter Minis all fully assembled. So far I have only gotten the female MI and they are really good sculpts and excellent minis overall! Definatelly worth checking out to save some time.
