Tyranid Infestation

This terrain set has its origins with a display board. This army consisted of purple and green Tyranids, my least favorite color scheme.

What didn’t work on the Tyranids themselves, seemed to come alive with the terrain. I think this is because clashing colors will work if they are modified, ie a DARK purple with a PALE green. Red and Green are the same way; you’re on thin ice with the Christmas effect, but a dark red and pale green can work a la these Tomb Kings I did about five years ago:

With the experience of an initial run under my belt, I enlisted the aid of Jon Gentry to create a whole set of studio terrain. I shot video of this two-day adventure to explain how we did it:

I created five distinct types of terrain: A set consists of: two large Capillary Tower Clusters, one small Capillary Towers, two Tunnel Exits, one Capillary Stump, and two Infested Ground pieces (counted as rough terrain).

To paint them, we just started with a base coat of black house paint and drybrushed on two layers of each appropriate color followed by a highlight stage (notably around the freckles on the towers).

When they were done we set them up on an extra long game board for the Avernus Campaign which we’re running around the studio. They looked very handsome and had the effect of drawing attention and giving that momentary feeling of transport to another world. That’s the whole point isn’t it?

I also shot some stills, which give a more accurate depiction of the color. The video is really dark.

If I could do it over again, I would have put the Infested Ground on ¼” board, too. They warped ever so slightly after all the expanding foam was on them (but not noticeably).

I am very much open to constructive criticism. What could be have done better? What would you like to see for future projects?

They look great.  I made a batch similar, but my caps weren't as tall when I played Nids waaayyy back when.

Some humble advice.  I don't know how expensive your egg sacs were (Perhaps not all), but a cheap and great looking alternative is fake melons/fruit from Wal-Mart.  They are foam, which  makes them very easy to tear up/work with and have great texture.  Wal-Mart also has water effects in their hobby aisle (Floral fake water) for 4 bucks...and works as well as the expensive stuff.

When I made my Nid drop sacs (Back in the day), I would take a melon, cut an opening..paint, etc.  Then take the water effects, mix up a batch and mix a small amount of food coloring in it for a slimy green look.  Pour it in the pod with some leaking out on the surrounding MDF base.  Looks perfect once done and cheap to boot.  If only they would bring out rules for drop sac stealers.... .

For MDF, I usually paint the bottom before I apply anything topside.  It makes the MDF warp every so slightly down...and when you paint/apply texture to the top it usually evens out.

If only I were young again...nursing pays too much...and I doubt the Mrs. would handle me telling her we were relocating and I was going to take a paycut so I could paint models all day

I saw this model at a local game shop, a mammoth skeleton kit.  I can't remember the manufacturer.  I counted it as six chariots; if you look at the base you'll see removeable sections.  I would take off the horsemen to indicate that a chariot had died.  Behind the mammoth is a skeletal "poop scooper" and a pile of skulls (the joke being that the mammoth pooped out bones).

The top part is balsa and three chariot farings, as well as the faring from a Settra the Imperishable kit as the headdress for the mammoth.

This piece always got a lot of attention, you can see it from across the room.  I wonder where it is today...
