what's the deal with everyone complaining about the brush paints

their stuff's not bad - the regular line is about on par with vallejo, save for the crappy bottles, and the foundation paints are just great

Went digging through my old posts, and guess what? I've been hating on mat ward since before it was cool

I totally agree. GW Citadel Colour is a good line equally on par with Vallejo Game Colour. The inks and metalics in Citadel Colour are great and the Citadel Foundation line works well and has some good natural colours.

And why does every one moan about the pots? I've had my GW colour pots for the last 8 years and none of them have dried out (both styles of bottle caps screw on and flick lid).

I've had more issues with Vallejo pots recently than GW ones.

Just do a test spray first on a peice of sprue or some card. If it looks like snow's coming out of the can instead of paint (ie large blobs of debris and nastiness) then don't use it.

GW white undercoat spray paint is notriously bad anyway. Your much better off with Chaos Black Spray. People complain about Chaos black spray but I've used many brands and personally I have no problem with it.

If you want a good white primer though use another brand. Gunzo Sangyo, Krlyon, Halfords (if your in UK), there are plenty of good white and light grey sprays out there.

I agree, avoid GW's white undercoat, i've found even generic walmart brand white spray primer is better

What's wrong with GW paint?  The fact that it is completely mediocre and costs $2 US for 1/3 of an ounce, that's what's wrong with it.

Check out the paints you can get at an actual artist supply store.  You can get acrylic water based paints for about a $1.5 US for a 2 ounce bottle.  To get an equivalent amount of GW paint, I'd have to spend $12 US, making GW paint eight times expensive for no tangible increase in quality.

I personally prefer CeramCoat, though their yellow sucks.  It is a line of paint designed for use on ceramics, metals, and other hard surfaces.  Another benefit it has is this:  I have bottles that are over five years old & the paint is still liquid and useable.

I'll never understand why wargame hobbyists incessantly fall for buying the overpriced paints you find in the hobby stores instead of getting quality paints at an art store.

Actually I have to disagree I've used lots of brands of paint from wargame brands to art suppliers and I find that Citadel colour and now especially Citadel Foundation are worthy additions to a painters collection.

Hey I have bottles of Citadel colour that are 6 - 8 years old and they are still fine, both styles of lids. I really don't understand why people have such issues with the pots. Don't cake the rim with paint and close them properly and they will last fine.

Actually in the UK its quite the reverse. Art suppliers from a serious art store are very expensive. I also use art store oil gouche, inks, turpantine, and thinners in my mini painting. However I've found few art specialists acrylic paints that have been better than most wargame company products (regardless of manufacturer, be they GW, Vallejo, or P3).

Ceramcoat is not really suitable for miniature painting. I use it for painting terrain, but the pigment level is mush inferior to GW/Vallejo.

Gw paint is great stuff, little pricey but heck no worse than any other high end paints.
In the can i just wish they still made black primer as i have half an army finished with it and no where to find it now.

As a Canvas painter I will tell you my experiance. The cheap acrylics you can buy are good only for terrain. When it comes down to it, paint quality in canvas painting is determined by price. And even after that, you need to spend a lot of time mixing colors and thining using acrylic medium.

Gw paints are actualy very good quality with their metalics and inks being top notch. The problems with GW paints are price of course, but more importantly IMO is color range. They have a very limited palette.

Hmmm i cant say i have ever had an issue with the pallette. But than again at a certain point you mix almost everything.
With there new foundations they rival Vallejo.

for what it's worth.. I find the people that paint with ceramcoat usually tend to try to save some money, then, when they see that their level of painting elevates only by purchasing a higher quality paint, they never go back..  if you like it awesome, the pigment level is shoddy and hardly worth worrying about really.

no one falls for bying overpriced paints. people make choices based on what they like and what they want..

the saying goes, you get what you pay for. if you payed jack for it, you jack from it..

Oh i have no problem with GW/Citadel paints, use them all the time, I just don't like their white undercoat, I use their other paints for just about everything else (though I do have to admit I have a big bottle of acrylic walmart brand black I use, as well as a big squeeze bottle of a green that I like that citadel doesn't have)

For what it's worth, some of my old Citadel paints are 11-12 years old and still useable (though they're mostly little-used shades like Ultramarine Blue, Snot Green and Tentacle Pink, all the truly useful ones have run out over the years).

The supply does not get to make the demands.
