I just noticed this reading the latest WD last night, it seems that GW is dropping the price on Dwarf Elite Troops, by a pretty decent amount in some cases.

Hammerers, Ironbreakers, Slayers, and Miners (who went plastic).  The first three sets of models went from a box of 10 for $45 with a Command Blister containing 3 models costing $15 (I think), meaning after doing bits orders for the last one or two models needed to do a regiment of 20, it cost about $110 or so to build a set of 20 Hammerers or Ironbreakers.  Granted you never really wanted to do that for Miners or Slayers, but hey I'm sure some people did and that's what it cost.

Now you get 5 Models for $20, with the Command Box costing $22 but coming with 2 additional figures to make a complete rank, so $82 buys you 20 models to do a full regiment of the guys.  Even if you only wanted say 10 Miners or 10 Slayers, you're still saving $5 on the slayers and $10 on the Miners (while also getting way more options and bits in the box due to plastics).

Not to pull a Toreador or anything but I figure that if every price increase that they do gets a thread of wailing and gnashing of teeth a price drop like this should also get some recognition.

I dont play WHFB but I have noticed the occasional reduction, even when it is minor.

It still doesnt make up for charging the equivilant of $25 for eldrad though.

But I am very glad to see that there is a price reduction for some things in WHFB. Thats the one thing keeping me from buying much into the game. I thought my sisters army for 40K was expensive, but WHFB puts that cost to shame in some cases.

They've even repackaged the longbeards, which IIRC can be built out of the plastic kit. While part of me wants to cynically ask how many Elite dwarfs have sold since the new plastics came out, it's still good to see GW is at least aware of price/demand curves.

Oh yeah, check out my responses here: www.dakkadakka.com/Forums/tabid/56/view/topic/postid/168256/forumid/23/tpage/1/Default.aspx#168323
Given that you can convert Hammerers from the basic warrior box for a unit of 20 of them with some extra bits you'll likely have from the other plastic kits (and BFSP), and the fact that Hammerers totally outshine Ironbreakers or Longbeards as far as elite troops go, and I'm sure they're losing sales.

Still I do have to admit that despite my best efforts to NOT spend more money on the hobby (self imposed frugality for a long time), they're making it hard on me.  I picked up a small bits order last night at the local store and looking at their new plastic terrain sets and the cheaper prices for Ironbreakers really is tempting me.   Also given that I can easily go to another local retailer or online and get that $82 regiment for $25% off, netting it for $62, makes things all the harder to resist.

So while I'm not running out and spending money on this right now, I do know what I'll drop hints for my wife and some family members as to what make excellent Birthday and XMas gifts.  Where as a few weeks ago I was thinking "Hey maybe I could think about getting two starter boxes and a rulebook for Warmachine for my birthday", now I'm thinking that I'd rather just get some of these terrain sets and maybe a regiment instead?  Also, how sad is it that at 26, I still use my birthday and xmas as my excuse to get toys?

You know, I recently got a pile of White Dwarfs (for free) from the last couple of years, and I noticed that a box of plastic LotR wood elves was, like, US$1 per miniature! We haven't seen prices like that from GW in twenty years, have we?

LotR plastics haven't changed in price for 3 years IIRC.  In the UK the models work out at 67p each which compared to metal historicals at c. £1 each makes them cheap, but still not a bargain, given they are one-piece (or poss two with long weapons or shields).

They are cheaper than equivalent metal core troops (which usually sell £7 for 3 in the UK), but are MUCH worse in quality because of the restrictions of the plastic moulding technology.

At $1 per miniature I would say they were priced at no less than they are worth.  Generally GW LotR one-piece plastics make even Old Glory look good, although there are a few exceptions.

And I like LotR and have hundreds of the things (but then I can't remember the last time I paid full price for anything wargaming related - most of my LotR plastics were bought at 50% discount of eBay or similar).

This is good if they are lowering prices here and there. Could be a case of simple market force at work - I got myself a whole Dwrf army and the only new GW model I got was one Dwarf Lord. They simply can't get away with the premiums that they can with 40k because too many competitors are around to sell to those who blanche at GW's prices.

If I buy GW, then I expect a bare minimum of 35% off the going reatail rate. I know it is pompous of me to expect such prices, but things change nowadays. its a buyers market for most things. Naming the price your willing to pay isnt much too hard to do.

I think GW is beginning to realize that with their halt of raising prices across the board every year (even though they do engage in stealth hikes).

The only things I pay even remotely close to full retail for is fringe items, such as gale force nine tokens, CNC workshop urban tables, etc. Only because those are nearly impossible to find on the secondary market.

The products themselves have a 40% retail margin, IIRC. With advertising and other costs, no retail could survive selling GW products at 35% off. Are you buying used models?

Fixed your post.

Perhaps he buys from a traveller from an antique land.

I met one the other day. He tried to sell me a colossal wreck.

I didn't buy it.

Why not? It's good! I only has a few mold lines and crisp detail!
I took two...

On topic: Price reduction is a good thing...bad thing is that in Germany it's hard to get your hands on retail prices and if you find some, you get 15% max. As far as I know at least.

Depending on which distributor you get your product from and the amount you purchase it can be anywhere from 30-38%. GW used to give a 47% discount back during the early days of third ed for product, though I dont know of any shops that buy directly from GW anymore, so I am not sure where the direct discount from the manufacturer stands.

I bought my warwalkers from DropZone before he went batty. 25% off of two $60 box sets of three warwalkers (after shipping) equals to about $15 per warwalker. Looking at GW prices for these, this is roughly 50% of the retail. I even got the bonesinger for free from robert (I really dont know where that dude went wrong...shame)

I look for deals. They are out there. Sometimes you have to wait for sales (like 6 boxes of three shining spears for $100 from a local game shop. These went on sale because GW changed the packaging...not too sure about the idea behind this, but it happened. I am not going to complain.)

Most times game shops are willing to cut me huge breaks because of the amount of interest I bring into shops, with terrain, armies, etc. Because I drum up business, the smart shops know when to make a money maker happy and give the promoter a break.

Then of course, there is ebay. Lots of great deals there for sealed product if your patient and stick to what your willing to pay.

With the exception of a dozen models for Eldar I have been lugging around for years waiting for a new codex, I have spent all of $300 for 6 warwalkers, 1 wraithlord, 4 heavy weapons platforms, 64 guardians, 2 support weapons batteries, 1 falcon, 18 shining spears, 6 jetbikes, bonesinger, 20 new dire avengers, 3 wraithgaurd, 2 vypers.

I would say I came out ahead.
