in our Vogen campaign my guard army is attacking marines who have taken the palace of peace. This means a 'grand assault' mission. Does anyone have advice for guard v marines in a CoD grand assault? Basically i have to control every building in his deployment zone. equal points in Cod (as opposed to CF which had a 2:1 points ratio) Marines are hard to kill. Indirect isn't very good in CoD. Marines are hard to kill. Battle cannons don't like 4+ cover saves. Plasma vet squads don't like 4+ cover saves. gb

Hellhounds. 3 S5 shots, 3 S4 shots, and a template that covers as many models as possible, that ignores cover saves, that hits on a 4+ with individual re-rolls if it misses, S6. The amount of firepower a Hellhound can put out, plus its ability to ignore cover saves, make it a great tank. In CoD it's even better.

Yup, hellhound works great s6 ap4 weapon is amazing especially if playing against SM's with neophytes this is better. The key is that the flamer wounds, forcing lots of saves against the marines armor which is always better than no saves.

Don't under estimate the power of las guns. In this setting, you both should be in positions where you will be getting 4+ cover saves. This will do wonders for your 5+ armored guardsmen but against you low powered / high volume fire weapons, won't help your opponent one bit. So don't be scared to march up foot troops to get into las gun range.

Could otherwise useless units, say Ogryn with a priest, actually work in CoD?

I've always been a big proponent of simply forcing your opponent to have to make a lot of armor saves. This works even in non-CoD games, but is even more important with the preponderance of 4+ cover saves in CoD.
From a guard perspective, you really do have a lot of options.
Hellhouds are good. Use terrain to limit the amount of return fire you can get from AT weaponry and blaze away.
On a similar note, HF sentinels from command sqauds can be useful and can support the fire of the HH. Using their scout-move and a lot of terrain, you can move into position to toast exposed flank elements of the enemy position. The fact that they are walkers also makes them better for negotiating the rough terrain, and the area terrain rules combined with the amount of cover can help to make the sentinels more survivable.
Continuing the theme of flamer templates; try drop trooping different squad groups with as many flamers as they can carry. The flamer is cheaper than most of the other weapons, and they become more cost-effective since the high str/low AP of the more expensive weapons is countered by the template affect of the flamer and the good cover save against the more expensive weaponry.
Leman Russ Exterminator(?) can put out something like 15 shots if you kit it right.
Don't think that ordnance weapons are completely nerfed in CoD; they still can force a lot of saves. You just need to find the cheapest way in which you can get them. Demo charges and IF Basilisks...maybe Griffins if they'll let you use them from IA. These items give you the big blast marker that can hit a ton of models in the packed recesses of CoD terrain, thereby (once again) forcing a lot of saves.
Sal.

Posted By Mr. X on 06/06/2007 10:53 AM Could otherwise useless units, say Ogryn with a priest, actually work in CoD? You can't attach a Priest to Ogryns. And no. True, they might get a decent cover save but they still have to get to the enemy without getting shot. That's unlikely. Even assuming they do, they still suck in CC (especially when compared to Rough Riders) and have a terrible RKR.

Saldiven I agree with you completely, forcing people to make saves is the best way to slim a force down, even with traditionally crap guns like shotguns and lasguns. If you can get some arbites with shotguns in there, they can be HAVOC to a cloistered marine force. With lots of shotgun fire and lasgun fire, eventually marines will go down, eventually. Force enough saves and eventually guys die. That doesn't mean go all out with just lasguns, but by all means do NOT be afraid to use them. Flamers are critical in CoD just because they can cause so much damage to clustered enemies.

I figured rough riders wouldn't be too great in CoD without frag grenades.

Three Demolishers. With the siege shell upgrade, you could be pinning squads holded up in building on a 4+, plus forcing armour saves. Couple that with three hellhounds dropping all that flaming death, the number of armour saves would be impressive. Advance the infantry and try to rapid fire and template the rest of them.

part of what i figured out is that he can't claim the buildings if i have a scoring unit in it as well. Seems pretty basic but before this lightbulb went off i was thinking that i had to basically wipe him out in order to win. Now all i have to do is make sure he doesn't wipe me under scoring by the end of hte game. And as always, thank you for your replies!
