Two long running issues I have had with Dakka

1) The URL is the topic reply notification emails is invalid and doesn't work

2) The main editing tool doesn't work in Safari. Gives a bizarre error message but no  editing tools. Given that it is a more standards compliant than IE this seems a bit odd.

The editor works in IE and Firefox. Russ has stated in the past that he is content with that level of support, as it covers a good 95% or so of the usual Dakka traffic. For those of us using other browsers (I use Opera), he did get the Quick Reply functionality to work.

Standards compliance is great (Opera passes Acid2!), but the "de facto" standards set by IE end up supported, just because it is the most prevalent browser. What can you do?

I'm from the school of thought that if you're going to offer a function in your site that you should make sure it works regardless of the browser someone is using.

Given that this is running on Dot Net Nuke I am assuming that even Firefox support was a hack and that the editor was written for IE only

*shrug* I could offer the cliche'd "Feel free to start your own wargaming site, and offer that support," but I won't. I understand your position, and have discussed this issue a time or two with Russ. Russ was kind enough to provide enough support for lower market-share browsers to allow us to a) read; and b) use quick replies.

Diminishing returns has kicked in. It'd take progressively greater amounts of work to provide support for progressively fewer numbers of browsers. I've learned to be content; I'm playing in someone else's house, after all, and he doesn't even charge (mandatory) admission.

I didn't want to mention it. :-)

If this bug is anything like what I get for my mod email notifications it appears as if somehow an extra header of 'http://www.dakkadakka.com/' gets added to the link for some reason.

Although it's a tad annoying, you just have to copy the address (not including the eroneous header) into your browser. I'm not sure if this is exactly the same issue but it may well be.

You should definitely PM Russ about this issue to let him know. As for the Safari incompatibility issue, he is well aware of it but you can certainly make it known that you are one person that would appreciate Safari functionality.

Heh, I don't get it. I mean, I understand that everyone has their preferred browser, but why limit yourself to one?

A browser is a tool just like any other tool. You need to match the tool to the job.
Some sites give my IE fits, so I open up Firefox. Most of the time though, I stick with IE as it's works 99% of the time.

It's fantastic when a contractor uses screws that have a hybrid Phillips/flat head, but sometimes they only use a flat head screw. Later, when you need to remove the screw, you don't call up the contractor and complain about it, you just put your Phillips head screwdriver down and pick up your flat headed one.

A man who limits himself to a single tool is not a man.

Somewhere along the line, browsers became a religion. Myself, I try not to preach (too much) about the wonders of Opera over the rest, even though it is clearly superior.

I don't use IE. For anything. Has much less to do with any religious tendencies, and much more to do with constant security issues. For any number of reasons, you are far more likely to be exposed to malicious software and viruses surfing with IE than with any other browser, even if you don't "do" anything yourself. (Example: ~1 year ago, a compromised banner ad at a well-used World of Warcraft database site was installing keyloggers on people's machines, through IE. Yes, appropriate other anti-malware/virus/etc. tools may stop it; vaccines don't encourage me to expose myself to smallpox, either.)

It wasn't, I admit, a particularly well-executed attempt at being funny. (I do read signatures.)

The interweb isn't really a great medium of subtle humor. We all didn't get it. Mind you, perhaps I'm just dim... I've been called that before.

Its probably related to the fact that someone else a few months ago made a similar comment but was totally serious.

That is the issue I am getting. I think the problem is that the URL is malformed (there is no : after the http) and so it gets modified to make it valid.

The Safari thing is really a minor issue. I just get annoyed that I can never remember it when I am on my Mac and then I have to use Quick Reply and then someone *female dog*es me out for not making the links in my post clickable.

You can use html in the quick reply box; it works.

Meh.

You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You use a browser for a reason other than marketshare (and, thus, web developers targeting it), you take your chances. "Standards compliance" is a load of crap -- the real "standard" is what web developers code for, and that's IE/Firefox. It doesn't matter how perfectly a browser adheres to the W3C standard, what the real world actually develops to is what's important.

What you're saying is "support my software choice" when it already works for 95% of the world, and you already have options for making it work.
