Woodbridge, VA

Went to a small tourney (18 players) at the GW Glen Burney (Baltimore) Battle Bunker yesterday to field test the list I'm considering for the Baltimore GT. The tourney was sponsored by a local (northern VA) club )the Big Gunz) and was not run by the GW Bunker staff. All in all, I'm quite happy with 2 draws and a win, as the tourney was at 1850 and I only fielded 1750. My list at the bottom.

Game 1, Andre and his Necrons. Always a bugaboo for me, I have a hard time against the toasters. Especially when they have two Monoliths. The rest of the army was three large squads of Scarabs, three squads of Warriors, a squad of three heavy destroyers, and a Lord with at least Veil and Orb. Mission was Gamma level Cleanse. He started with pretty much everything hiding behind terrain, got the first move and Scarabs zoomed all over the place. I shot a lot of them down but was assaulted by the remainders of all three squads on turn 2, as well as having one Monolith show up right in the middle of one group and whittling units down. My turn two I managed to lose three units deepstriking but did clear out two of the Scarab squads. Turn 3 and 4 was spent pretty mcuh shooting at his Monoliths (2nd showed up on T4) as his warriors continued to hide. I did kill the Hvy Destroyers on T4 with a deepstriking 4 plasma command. Oddly, the plasmas only killed two of them, while the single laspistol shot from my LT took out the last one! Finally on T5 he started bringing Warriors through the Monoliths, and on my 5 I finally killed one and immobilized the other, while dropping the squad near the immobilized one below half. His T6, he ports the reduced squad out of combat with my sentinel and gets it back to 8 models (of 11) and guns down the sentinel. So at the beginning of my T6, he's got a squad straddling the line between my home quarter and my lower left, and the 8 man squad in my upper right. I've got units in lower left (plasma Command), home, and upper right Lascannon sentinel and two Infiltrating Fire Support squads. So all I need to do for the win is drop three warriors from the 8 man squad and get some luck on the die roll for the squad straddling the line. No such luck, two lascannons miss, plasma gunner kills himself, and he makes all 8 or 9 saves that the FS squads force him to. But I did get the other bit of luck, as his straddling squad rolled and officially wound up contesting my home quarter. So I claim one quarter for 460 or so points and get a draw.

Game 2 was Paul and his Witchhunters. Lotsa SOB but one strangeness. He had an allied DH Inq Lord (for the Taror and Mystics) and a Callidus. Let's see, an SOB character (HQ), three walking squads of 10 or more SOB, three Immolater with 6 man squads of various sorts, three exorcists, and a squad of 5 Seraphim rounded out the list. Random mission, rolled for on turn 3, Alpha level. Great... No infiltrate, no deep strike, There goes half my usual advantages out the window. He won the dice roll and then, made me go first!? He wanted to be able to react to the mission. I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, so a little movement and open fire. Immolaters first, two dead, last one weaponless. Basically, it was a shooting gallery and of course, we forgot to roll for the mission until T4, mission, claim terrain features. Quick look, he's got two in his deployment zone, I've got three in mine, don't think either of us is gonna get them away from each other. That leaves the one to my lower left where I've got a Special Weapon squad parked and he's got a 10 man SOB squad as well, on opposite sides of very large ruined building; and the one right in the middle where my Callidus just killed off a small squad and is cleaning up on a large squad. Oh, his Callidus hit my flank, used the Neural shredder and wound up outside of assault range......... With a Fire support squad nearby........ Heheheheheheheh. Anyways, I push for the piece in the middle and our two units in the left dance with difficult terrain rolls, each trying to be the first to shoot. I win on turn 5, move in, toss the Demo charge, direct hit, and he makes every single cover save. So I assault, hoping to tie him up until another unit can get there. Didn't need it as the SW squad drew or won every combat, and was still there at the end of the game, contesting the terrain. Didn't go so well in the middle as his SOB character and Seraphim (who hid in the back until he knew the scenario) used the bottom of 6 to clean out my unit there and claim it. So three terrain each, and one contested. A draw.

Finally, Game 3 against Joe and his Orks. Walking Warboss in mega-armor, 3 squads trukk boys, each with a Nob in mega-armor, 2 large walking squads, a cybork squad in a trukk, a Leman Russ, The vulcha guy and 5 Stormboyz and a squad of 3 killa kans. Mission, Suicide Squad with Deep Strike and Infiltrate. So I decide to have some fun, deploy my Inq Lord, and I'm done except for Infiltrators and deep strike. After he's done, I set up the two Fire Support squads (These guys have really earned their pay throughout the tourney so far) on top of a very large (12" tall) building in my lower right. Then I make him go first. He moves everything forward, blasts at the squads with everything he can bring to bear, and I lose two lasguns.. Then I shoot up two trukks, then T2 he tries again, and I lose one lasgun. And then my HQ, Vets, and Callidus show up, but all three Platoons failed and I forgot to roll for the sentinels! Vets kill the Leman Russ, one demo charge scatters back and kills all but one SW guy, the other kills the last Trukk boy squadand the Callidus occupies the large walking squad on the right side of the table, away from his Warboss and Kans. Long story short, most of my stuff deep strikes into the cleared zone that the fire support squads and Callidus provide on my right flank, with only the suicide squad intentionally going to the left. Dropped them into a hole between his Kans, Warboos, and the large walking squad, landed with a direct hit, shoot at the Kans, totally whiff, get assaulted by the Warboss and large squad, Inflict one unsaved wound on the Warboss and they died. All in all, Overwhelming victory for the IG as all he had left was the wounded Warboss, the walking squad, the Cyborks (minus trukk), and two of the mega-armor Nobs that had mobbed up when one squad lost in hth to the full SW squad.

The only fly in the ointment was in the way the tourney was run, or rather, how it was scored. They decided (without posting it in advance) to change the win-loss-draw scoring. Not just to adjust the points but to make a loss worth more than a draw. Yeah, that's right, a win was worth 15, a draw was worth 5, and a los!! was worth 10!! Ummm, it was supposed to encourage peaople to play for the win instead of the draw.............. Yeah, right.

13th Arkiv’l Imperial Guard Regiment

Founded during the Cadian Gate crisis (see Eye of Terror), the 13th was equipped from stockpiles of older weaponry and equipment known as Rogue Trader Era equipment. Officer slots were filled by minor nobility and younger sons, with initial troop levies drawn from their lands. Serving with distinction in the Eye of terror campaign, the Regiment was given the opportunity to upgrade their equipment with newer issue. However, for the most part they have chosen to stay with the equipment that has taken them to glory thus far.

That's some crazy scoring. I've seen that where it was a misprint, but never intentional.

I had fun at this tournament, but then, I had talked with the club leader at Gamesday and knew about the scoring. They were supposed to have bonus points for people who scored draws, to enable them to outscore losses.

The dynamics of the scoring system changed how I played. I would have ended up with a win and 2 draws, but when I realized in turns 4-5 I would not be able to win the game, I threw units out to die, and generally tried to lose in order to score more points. Cheesy way to score an extra 10 points, but hate the game, not the playa.

Now, I do have a beef with Don Mondo....I would think with Lt. Foxworthy going off to Australia that a Lt. Gatchalian might be replacing him.

Exactly why losses should not be worth more than draws.

Not hating...

When did you guys find out about the scoring?
Did the organizers explain why they made it this way?

Hahah...that scoring system is completely irrational!!!

Let's see...assume it is end of turn three, and it is readily apparent that you have been out played and the dice gods are frowning mightily upon you.

Which one is easier to do:

a) Try to conserve enough points through maneouvering and making sound shooting judgments?

or

b) Get the rest of your army killed?

That scoring system may very well be the sillyest thing I have ever heard of. It is disgustingly hard to preserve a draw when you are being beaten. Why is that being punished?

I found out after my first game, apparently my opponent and I (one of the club officers) missed the mid-game announcement, or only heard the 15-10-5 part and read that as win-draw -loss. So we discovered it when we turned in our scoresheets after the first game. yeah, one of the club officers didn't know.......................

Oh, and the purpose was to encourage people to play for the win, not the tie. As I pointed out to them then and Keith just supported, it actually leads to people throwing away the game instead.

Mr Mondo,

I can give you more forums to complain in if you want. Now you have completely left out a few interesting things about that tournament. Do tell everyone about your very loud and inappropriate complaining at the tournament. Please also tell everyone about the mature throwing of your and your necron opponents models, when you were politely and professionally told what you could do if you didn’t like the tournament rules.  Did I leave anything else out on your actions at the bunker?

Wow you guys sound like kids in high school shouting FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!

I think my comments say it all. I am just sick of Mondo complaining about the tournament. What he failed to mention was how he *female dog*ed about the scoring and acted at the tournament.

I would find it hard to complain about a tournament that was FREE and then gives away one thousand dollars in prizes and swords for the winners. The worst player for each system even got a army box.

Do you have any proof of these allegations or are you just spouting vomitous filth? The burden is on you. Make outlandish charges and you'd better support them. Ironic, as you are complaining about the tournament. Moreso, now, than the OP. So you obviously didn't find it too hard, did you?

And besides, even if I finished first and won a huge prize, I'd still complain if the tourney was badly run and organized. Squeaky wheel and all.

I have played against Don @ a Baltimore GT.  He played an Iron Hands SM army with all scouts.  He was fun and entertaining to play against.  I also played @ the recent Baltimore GD that he ran and he was great in that role also.  I read his report, he certainly didn't overly complain about the event.  He clearly conveyed that he was  content with his experience.  I was not there, so I have no idea how he acted.  I can't believe that the guy would throw someone elses models.  If he did, then that is ridiculous.  Also, what exactly was he "politely and professionally" told to do if he didn't like the tourney rules.  This is where I can see someone getting out of line if they perceived those comments as anything but "polite and professional".

In my opinion, Don, and anybody else, had a legit beef with how that scoring went down and at the very least should have been allowed to question the reasoning and certainly vent a little about how counterproductive it is to score draws less than losses.  If anything, they should have left it alone or increaesed the points for a WIN by 5 points to encourage players to avoid a draw.

You were there, panurgle, so I cannot dispute your claim.  I can surmise that what you consider "loud and innappropriate complaining" might not be accurate and what you perceived as "polite and professional" may not exactly have been so.  I don't consider myself friends with Don, but I can say with conviction that he is a decent guy and find it hard to believe he would act the way you claim without justification.  People do have bad days, but if he threw the other players necron models, that is pathetic.

Hi all.

Let's clear this up.

I was Don's opponent at the Bunker when this happened and can verify everything that happened.  I am the "Andre'" he is referring to.  I'm not interested in personally attacking Don - we had a great game; it was a lot of fun.  Now, having said that he did react in an extremely counterproductive and loud fashion after the 1st game based on the scoring system.  There is no denying that.  I have said this to him personally so this is no shock nor me hiding behind a forum stating my opinion.

He did toss some of my models when he was picking them up from his side of the board after the game and after the blow up discussion - but apologized for the action after looking up at me from the table.

So the comments so far are not off base or made up - it all depends on how you view them in context.

If it's free it's for me. OTOH, if it sucks, I'm gonna tell you it sucks. I'd rather pay to play in an environment where the rules make sense, or are atleast posted before hand, over free with crap rules that make no sense and encourage people to throw games. (Not literally Mondo).

The worst player for each system even got a army box.

Way to encourage the win.
Do you often run tournies without all of the "officers" knowing the rules?

@ Mr. Mondo- You can come play at my house once I'm moved in, just don't throw my minis ya big bulley. Or complain about my stupid house rules

Right, here's the deal. I'm the VP of the club that hosted the tournament at Glen Burnie. What we were trying to do was test a new system of judging that would actually force people to play for the win, instead of playing for the draw or playing a VP denial game. It was a TEST, it was announced at the beginning of the tournament as well as on the flyers that we put out advertising the tournament how the scoring was going to be done. It was also a free tournament. What happened with Don Mondo was completely out of line, as he decided to make a big fuss in the middle of the Battle Bunker, as well as in front of every single person that was there. He was politely asked to step outside where we could discuss the matter privately, but he refused and got even louder. Finally, as we were not going to change the judging system in the middle of the tournament, he was informed that if he did not want to participate he could leave. Now, everyone else that participated in the tournament had a great time, and had polite and informative comments on how we did the scoring. Had Mondo come to us after the tournament, as the other people did, we would have had no problem listening and incorporating his feedback into the system of scoring that we use at out next tournament. He decided that he would make a huge public outburst instead. As a result, we are going to have to seriously consider if he will be allowed to participate in any of our future tournaments. As I said, it was a TEST. As with all things there is room for improvement. But there are right ways of making comments on what can be improved, and there are wrong ways. Mondo chose the wrong way, and now he'll need to bear the consequences of his actions.

I'm not going to start making excuses for some guys actions at a tourney I wasn't even in attendance for, but I think you need to seriously consider some of your own actions that may have set this guy off before you start banning people from future tournaments/battle bunkers/IFL (whatever that is).

  • First of all, Don's 1st game opponent, Andre, was an officer in your own club and didn't know the rules for the scoring until they handed in the score sheets.
  • The result of that game was a DRAW, so this absolutley impacted Don's scoring in a negative way.  How would you feel/react if you just played for 2 hours in what seemed to be a nail-biter based on the battle report that came down to an IG comeback finish in the last round only to be basically "punished" in the scoring for trying to WIN!
  • One of the other participants admitted he played differently because of the scoring set-up and lost 2 games ON PURPOSE just to score higher.  This is a swing of 20 points in the final scoring between Don and the other contestant, proving that Don's concerns were justified about how absurd/unfair the "test" scoring was.   All it did was encourage people to tank a game to score higher in the overall points, which is so much easier than trying to win a game.
  • Food for thought:  a player that loses all 3 games (30 points) would finish higher in overall points than a player that never lost with 1 win and 2 draws (25 points).  Does that make sense to you in a tourney setting?  Right there you should have realised the flaw in the scoring and the potential for discontent in a player.

Again, I was not there, but it appears that your club ambushed the players with an absurd test scoring system to encourage players to go for a win instead of a draw.  I understand the purpose of the concept and have no problem with encouraging players to avoid draws.  But what you failed to realise is that the way your club scored the event actually encourages players to "throw" a game that they were not sure they could win instead of trying to score a draw or win.  I guess your experiences gave you the perspective that players play to draw using VP denial techniques and you were trying to stop that strategy.  Most draws I achieved were the result of either my opponent or myself using strategy to avoid a loss.  Or the result of some freak dice rolling.  Or simply a balanced game with balanced lists played by equally skilled players.

These kinds of player problems occur when tourney organizers attempt to "fix" the game by trying to force/control/restrict players to playing what you feel is the "right" way to play the game/make a list for some moral/fluff-based/equaliser reasoning.

I hope as the VP of your club, you can admit that by scoring a loss more than a draw encourages players to avoid draws and LOSE a game on purpose to score higher in the overall standings and is completely unfair to players (like Don Mondo) that try to avoid a loss and go for the win, but wind up falling short with a draw.

The bottom line is YOU changed the normal scoring of a tourney, YOU failed to convince one of your participants of the legitamacy of the change, YOU failed to understand his point of view as to how that method can be easily abused by other players, YOU told him he could leave if he didn't agree with your rules changes after he already invested time/energy/gas in the first game, and YOU caused him to blow-up publically during your tournament.    That last bit was sarcastically trying to point out that perhaps you share some responsibilty in the events of that fateful day.

The above response was typed in a calm and controlled fashion with little or no emotion.  Please respond professionally and appropriately.  Thank you!

I think this has gone as far as it needs to go. I was at the tournament, and I didnt think the arguements were as bad as they seem on here. It was a nicely run tournament with terrific prize support. I had three great games against three great players. The scoring was...unique, and I personally didnt hear about it until after game 1. But if the club in question was nice enough to run a FREE TOURNAMENT, I'll play by their rules. I did not know, however, that models were thrown. Did he break anything?

Oh, and for the person throwing out that Battle Bunker not being a fan of the IFL: why?

I was at the tournament, and I didnt think the arguements were as bad as they seem on here.

Not according to two club officers that ran the event and another player (panurgle) that played in the event.  According to them it was a loud, inappropriate blowout that apparently disrupted the entire event of 18 players and the battle bunker itself in a counterproductive way.  Yet you were there and didn't think the arguements were that bad.  This is why people are questioning panurgles original assertion.  What REALLY happened?  How bad was it?
Was he a complete arse ranting and raving like a complete lunatic for the entire day or was he simply upset and questioning/disagreeing with one guy running the event?

BTW~ first it was mentioned that he THREW models, now the guy whose models were touched said they were "tossed" as Don was clearing his side of the table.  My original picture in my mind was Don throwing the models like a lunatic across the room.  Now I see him flicking his wrist with the models on the table.  Still highly inappropriate, but not as severe as originally alluded to by panurgle.  Now you were ther and you claim it wasn't that bad.  I wasn't there, but I would like more light shed on the situation because I know the guy being banned and it seems harsh to do so for the reasons I mentioned in the previous post..  It should go further until the severity of the initial reactions/comments made by panurgle and the club VP are justified, clarified, rectified.  Sorry, got a little Jesse Jacksonish.

  • First of all, Don's 1st game opponent, Andre, was an officer in your own club and didn't know the rules for the scoring until they handed in the score sheets.

Dornfist; thanks for keeping your posts reasonable - much appreciated.

As far as the quote I lifted, I'm not sure where that came from, but it is not accurate.  I knew about the scoring system - but when Don asked how many points you get for a Draw I gave him the wrong answer.  My bad.

Basically I made a mistake which I suppose was interpreted as me "not knowing."

I suppose people can agree to disagree and see the events as they see fit and that's fine - for my own part I will say that I hope to never react to any WHFB/WH40K information the way Don did at the tournament plain and simple.  It's a game, you know?  It's just not that crucial.

I certainly learned some lessons from it, and hope to use the information gathered to help improve our club, our future tournaments (and by default increase the fun level for anyone that attends), and my own enjoyment of the hobby.

Don Mondo and the IFL have not been banned from the Bunker, nor are they restricted from running events at the Bunker.

Could someone please let me or the Battle Bunker know where this rumor came from?

Thanks

The Soul5 post

I also know that the Glen Burnie Battle Bunker wants nothing to do with Mondo, or the IFL for that matter. As I said, it was a TEST. As with all things there is room for improvement. But there are right ways of making comments on what can be improved, and there are wrong ways. Mondo chose the wrong way, and now he'll need to bear the consequences of his actions.

when I realized in turns 4-5 I would not be able to win the game, I threw units out to die, and generally tried to lose in order to score more points.

Exactly why losses should not be worth more than draws.

Not hating...

When did you guys find out about the scoring?
Did the organizers explain why they made it this way?

I found out after my first game, apparently my opponent and I (one of the club officers) missed the mid-game announcement, or only heard the 15-10-5 part and read that as win-draw -loss. So we discovered it when we turned in our scoresheets after the first game. yeah, one of the club officers didn't know.......................

Oh, and the purpose was to encourage people to play for the win, not the tie. As I pointed out to them then and Keith just supported, it actually leads to people throwing away the game instead.

RedHarvest, this is where it came from.  Sorry if I misrepresented what he said, but it's right there and he says it plain as day.

Keith, I don't know who the VP (SOul55) is, but he says it in clear language that the battle bunker wants "nothing to do with Mondo, or the IFL".  I don't know his affiliation to the Glen Burnie battle bunker or the IFL, but it appears he had some sort of discussion with them about the subject.  How they don't know about it is beyond me.  How did the VP get that impression unless it was expressed to the guy by someone at the battle bunker.  If you know of or are affiliated with the bunker, you should ask this guy personally where he got his info from.
