First post at DakkaDakka.

Is there a place where I can find the exact rules for the tournament legality of scratchbuilt 40k models.  What are the specific rules?  I have been told by my local gamestore that the model must be at least 60% Gamesworkshop.  Does that mean the base model or the sum of its parts?  Also, are there any rules against using older GW models in the current edition tournaments.  ex...I found a 2nd Ed. hive tyrant that I am doing heavy conversions on to make it into a flying tyrant, will it be legal to use in a rogue trader?

I appologize if there was another thread somewhere with this topic, I didn't see it.  Thanks for any info.

meh, whatever...

with scratch builds, it's hard to say how much is really there.. If you are talking kit bashing from other company models and adding Gw stuff to it, then yeah.. but to be honest, 60% is such a hard number for someone to judge. but it is the sum of it's parts.

as for using older models, if it's WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) it doesn't matter how old it is. if you are modifiying it to fit your new army, there should be no issues at all.

with all tournaments, if you have questions, feild those questions to the person(s) who is running the event. each tournament is unique and will have certain things they allow and don't allow.

good luck to you

It's basically a rule of reason most places. If it looks cool and fits in with GW and you did it for the "right" reasons rather than trying avoid buying GW models then you are typically going to be okay.

As with all questions regarding tournaments, it all depends on the particular tournament and the only one who can answer your question with 100% authority is the tournament organzier himself. I would send these exact questions to the particular tournament organizer and find out his response.

When it comes to using old games workshop miniatures I have never seen any tournament not allow them, as long as your opponents can tell what exactly it is supposed to represent.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

The leniency towards scratchbuilt stuff varies a lot from army to army, but in general, as posted above, if the idea was to design a cool new idea, rather than buy a cheaper kit, you're generally ok.

In White Dwarf a few years back an Ork Speed Freek warband used trukks and battlewagons converted out of what were clearly toy trukks. They looked great, but were not anywhere close to 60% GW.

As a rule of thumb, stuff built for orks is almost always ok, Chaos is stuff is usually ok, and the rest are pretty much case by case. For example, converting chimeras extensively out of armored car models and tons of bits is often ok, but simply using a Sherman as a LRBT is not.
