now that the use of flyers has been confermed for apocalypse i have been working on ideas for new IG fighters. i realy like the forge world fighters but they are beond my price rangethus i turn to the history channle show: dog fights. after watching hours of the show i came out with 2 things, a basic knolage of air combat tatics, and a list of fighters that might look good "40k,ised" but i need to know what to change, or add.

first up and my personal favoret: the WWII P-38 j lightning

http://www.revell.com/catalog/products/1_48_Scale_P_38J_Lightning-642-0.html

second the modern A-10 Warthog (i'v seen these babys up close at the neat by air base, and they are nice:

http://www.revell.com/catalog/products/1_48_Scale_A_10_Warthog-647-7.html

third WWII Scale P-61 Black Widow (these are for bombers not fighters)

http://www.revell.com/catalog/products/1_48_Scale_P_61_Black_Widow-673-7.html

lastly the phantome of the skys the navy F-4 Phantom

http://www.3000toys.com/catalog/item_detail.aspx?itemfind=ARMOURB11B553

which work best, what bitz should i be adding, and what should be I changeing , and where can i get some 1/48 scale jet engeans?

beaten you to it. I have some warthogs i cought to convert to flyers for 40K before we even knew about apoc. Question is will the GW stores let us use them, I have also got some coptors to convert as IG vulture and valkyres. As for the phantoms its my fav plane. I have them in all scales and plenty of them but not for 49K they seem to big. ~If you look at the forge worldd models they are more representative of spitfires and mustangs from WW2. What scale were you thinking off? 1/48 or 1/32?

1/32 is a bit big but let me know?

1/48th could you post some picks or links to picks? i did realise that they where based on mustanges,i thought it was eather that or spitfires (on which the mustang is based)

I like the black widow, I saw one at the air and space museum at dulles and it is an impressive plane and not as famous as the lightning or warthog.

For Valks I recommend the V-22 Osprey. It looks sort of sci-fi, I did one a while back.

Unfortunately 40K aircraft don't really look much like real life stuff.

Fortunately they're kinda klunky and angular, and you could probably scratchbuild one.

The only similarity that I've ever noticed is between the Imperial Thunderbolt and the MiG-3.

http://mig3.sovietwarplanes.com/mig3/mig3.html

It has similar cockpit placement, far to the rear.

I also really like the MiG-3.  It's a really distinctive looking plane.  Looks fast.

40k aircraft designers have never heard of aerodynamics. Flying bricks that move by sheer engine power.

The P61 black widow is cool especially as a post-WWII aircraft... it had a bad reputation for bailing out of, the escape hatch was in the rear and pilots bailing out had a good chance of hitting the wing that spans the two tails... that sounds very imperial guard.

Maybe the Starship Trooper Aircraft would be usable for 40k conversions. I really want to see a player with an all aircraft army.

here the link to the forge world one, the bombers look like WW" bombers and the FW thunder bolflooks like the mig 3 but the GW ones are alot more Chunky so you would have to use the model kits as the skeliton and bulk them out

well you will at the least have to model the right 40K guns on them. Thats would be the minimum

For fighters or Fighter-Bombers I'd personally recommend an F4 Phantom:

Or a Tornado: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panavia_Tornado

Or a Jaguar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEPECAT_Jaguar

You can always add bits to these, and there's less scratchbuilding needed to make it look like a jet, than if you converted a prop.

Also, easier to get weapon bits like bombs, missiles, etc.

Or if you really want something different, I suggest something like a Viggen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_37_Viggen

Now if you want Retro without looking too dorky: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_Tunnan

Or something badass with a good paintjob: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_35_Draken

or: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloster_Meteor

All would make pretty good conversions and would give you lots of room to scratchbuild add ons.

Like a Viggen with Mustang-style wings......that might actually look pretty imperial, and would look somewhat similar to the FW Tbolt.

May I also suggest looking at Old Crow? Their stuff is great and I've ordered from them in the UK (I'm in the US) with no problems.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

How about a Hind Helicopter with the rotors removed and replaced with the thrust nacelles from a harrier jet? It has ordnance carrying wings and troop carrying capacity.

I think a HIND might be too distinctive but some of the other Russian choppers are obscure enought and boxy enough to pass:

What is that one that has a real boxy cockpit? The one that was in Red Dawn? A HIP? That one would be kind of cool, and not so distinctive.
