Just finished a 2000-pt struggle against Chaos with my Wolves.

I had

Pred A with HBS, Vindi and Long Fangs with 2XLC and 2xHB in a LC Razorback

Two Elite Dreads: one with TLLC and ML, the other AC and SBolt

Four Grey Hunter units with PGs in HB Razorbacks

A Ven Dread with AC and SBolt, a Rune Priest with staff, C-Plas and Chooser, a WG Battle Leader with C-Plas, CCW and Wolf tooth talisman

Chaos brought

Winged demon princew/ Mk Tz, Warp time, bolt of change

Chaos Lord of Slaanesh w/Mk, Blissgiver, jumppack, Personal; icon, Meltabomb

5 x Aspiring Champ Terminators of Slaanesh w/Light Claws, and Icon

Twu units of 1K Sons each with meltabombsand personal icon and accompanied by an Aspiring Sorc (Bolt of Change)

Two units of raptors, each with two Plas Guns and including an aspiring Champ with meltabomb, L Claws and Icon of Slaan

Three separate Obliterators

One Greater Daemon

The terrain was set up as an E-W stream flood plain with scattered light woods and wooded bluffs in the NW and SE corners. Space Wolves deployed on the W long edge advancing up the flood plain.  The Pred, a Las R-back and an HB R-back were on the N side of the stream with three GH units for vehicle security. The Vindi, Three Dreads, a GH unit and the Long Fangs were South of the stream. Initial contact occurred when two 1K sons units were seen deployed S of the stream and on the SE wooded bluff. The Wolves adjusted firing lanes and killed 2 1ks near the stream, driving the unit behind cover. The other unit moved off the bluff into a sheltered line.

Turn 2. The right (south) flank TLLC dread was immobilized trying to take up a better firing position and I started to throw my left flank forward into the flood plain. Two Obliterators dropped on his south flank and shot ineffectively at an R-back. The Demon Prince and a Raptor unit dropped and reinforced the 1KS unit hiding behind cover.

Turn 3. Ineffective firing by SW vehicles.  The 1KS, Demon Prince and Raptors began to advance to the NW toward the stream and a ford in the center of the table. An Obliterator dropped at the edge of the NW bluff over my Pred, firing on and destroying it. His Obliterators opposite my right flank destroyed an R-back and shook the Vindi.

Turn 4. Concentrated Wolf fire destroyed the Obliterator on the bluff. Other Wolf machines inflicted scattered casualties. One R-back attempted to move through the woods to bypass the wreck of the Pred and flank the 1KS and the Termies in the center and was immobilized. His Termies dropped NW of the ford and fired ineffectively at my R-backs moving toward the ford. Another raptor unit dropped in the center NE of the ford. One of his Raptor units moved downstream and assaulted my Long Fanga, killing two, but their discipline held. His Demon Prince assaulted and destroyed an R,back in the center.

Turn 5. The VenDread climbed over the wreck of an R-back and joined the melee near around the Long Fangs and was shaken while killing two Raptors. The Vindi killed one of the advancing Obliterators. Other vehicles inflicted scattered casualties on my center and left. A chaos lord joined the fray on my left flank and with the Termies started chewing through the Grey Hunters, one unit of which broke and fled west. An aspiring sorceror champion was dragged screaming into the Warp.

Turn 6: The surviving Grey Hunters on my left continued to engage the Termies and Chaos Lord in a desperate action inflicting only a few wounds, most of which were saved and taking many. The last unengaged Dread fired at additional Raptors moving up to the melee around the surviving Long Fang who went down under a hail of blows as did the last of the Raptors, smashed by the combat claw of the Vendread. The Vindi was immobilized trying to take up a firing position. The last complete Grey Hunter unit assaulted the Greater Demon to try and assist the Vendread.

The game ended with only scattered Wolf infantry surviving; the only scoring GH unit was locked with the Greater Daemon.  The Ven Dread and another Dread were still fighting the Greater Daemon but the VenDread was down to one attack per turn and the other was swinging a TLLC and Missile launcher. Of my other four surviving vehicles, three were immobilized. A mostly intact 1KS unit was still advancing, and the Chaos Lord and Termies were finishing off my left flank. An intact Raptor unit was maneuvring to engage the Dreads.

Biggest problems: vehicles immobilizing themselves, a Runic Staff that managed to counter only one Chaos spell and the inability to achieve positions where I could mass fire on one unit . This last was largely a product of the accurate drops generated by the numerous icons.

Only skimmed it through but it seems like greater dameons are still pwn?

...and the lord strode towards his fallen foe, a grim expression on his face as he raised his sword one last time.

Looks like you got off easy, not having had your SM units gunned down by his AP 3 bolters. How many ksons did he have in each unit?

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).
