The Last Chancer Who Survived

Finally got to play with my skorne starter kit this weekend. I played 2 games, it was fun. The first was against a cygnar starter set and lasted about 3 hours with the guy and his buddy teaching me the game. I won actually, my titan threw one of his jacks at his warcaster who happened to be standing in a little lake, then he slammed the big jack (Ironclad?) and with the help of my cyclopses we took him down while the warcaster was trying to relight the swimming jack's furnace, then my warlock decided to charge a light warjack and his little freddy kreuger claws ripped it to shreds with 2 boosted damage rolls that both rolled really high. At the end of turn 6 I won 5-4.

After that, we played a 2000 pt game (!) .. My 4 skorne plus a lot of trolls and wolves against 2000 pts of Cygnar. After 6 hours we called it at the end of turn 4. We probably would have lost in the end but I managed to hold my own against a LOT of stuff. I really love my titan "TITAN SLAM!" is my new war cry. The cyclopses were fun too but not as much as the titan The titan had Unrelenting going the whole time, so every time he got hurt he got to move 4" for free so he was all over the place wreaking havoc. It was fun getting charged by 3 knights, getting a little paper cut from the first one, then backing up out of range of the rest, and then slamming em to death on my turn

So, since he was so fun to use I'm really considering making that the focus of my army. They are a lot of points though I'm thinking first thing I'd want to add would maybe be a titan cannoneer + a unit of paingivers? The guy I was playing with has a bunch of Skorne he was willing to sell to me but I don't know if I want to get it.. he's got 2 full units of infantry plus a starter pack and 1 other warlock. Frankly though in that big game, I wasn't really impressed with much of the infantry (and there was a LOT). They just all seemed to die way too easy. I think if I were to use any infantry it would be for ranged attacks. Granted I've only played 2 games and neither at the "standard" points limits, but those were just my first impressions..

So for Skorne would I be better off sticking to mostly beasts? Or should I invest in the infantry? Any thoughts?

I haven't played against Skorne much, but I can tell you that the Cannoneer is excellent. The long-range fire support is very useful, and he's still a good smasher in HtH. Two Titans is the most I see anyone run, though. Infantry are generally very nice because they throw a lot of attacks and tend to be inexpensive points-wise.

I've been told by some local Skorne players that the Cannoneer is almost
always in their armies these days.

While I lack play time with Skorne (I refuse to play unpainted minis) I've been lurking on the Hordes Skorne tactics board for a while now, and have amassed quite a collection of them.

Most Skorne Warlocks surf the balance between Beast-friendly and Troop Friendly rather well, seeming to prefer a more "combined arms" approach to combat, rather than some more "beast spam" friendly factions. Makeda and Xerxis are good for keeping your troops around until you need them and both make superb beat-sticks. Hexeris and Zaal are good for bleeding the enemy as they kill your troops with some unique anti-attrition mechanics. And Morghoul has great potential as a Denial caster.

Most Meta seems to be leaning towards 1 cannoneer , 1 Krea+(Drake/Savage) lists with troops to taste.

Cetrati are a good choice for the points-cost (if a real pain to assemble) as multi-wound, shield-wall infantry with set defense they theoretically can absorb a charge well, and being medium bases, provide a good screen behind which to advance your softer troops. I don't see many lists taking more than one unit however.

Praetorians work well as fuel for the Ancestral guardian, or Death march.

Paingivers give Skorne some spectacular beast-(and fury) management options that few other factions seem to have.
